Double Glazing in Greenwich: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing supplies and fits double glazing in Greenwich and across the Royal Borough, from Georgian streets beside Greenwich Park to Eltham’s garden suburb and the newer homes of Thamesmead. We make aluminium windows and doors in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and offer UPVC windows, composite doors, conservatories and secondary glazing too. Our fitters travel from Fifield, roughly 38 miles by road and typically an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half each way, so we plan Greenwich visits in advance.

One borough, very different streets

Greenwich and Blackheath. Maritime Greenwich was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. West of the park, Crooms Hill has houses from the 17th century onwards, and Gloucester Circus was designed by Michael Searles in 1790. The Ashburnham Triangle near Greenwich station was built mostly between 1830 and 1870. In Blackheath Park, on the old Cator Estate, villas built from the early 1800s sit alongside the post-war Span estates designed by Eric Lyons, such as Corner Green of 1959 with its weather-boarded houses.

Eltham. The Progress Estate was built in 1915 under wartime housing powers for skilled workers at the Royal Arsenal munitions factories in Woolwich. It has 1,086 houses and 212 flats, designed under Frank Baines of HM Office of Works, and became a conservation area in 1975.

Woolwich, Plumstead and Thamesmead. Woolwich grew around the Arsenal, and Plumstead has Victorian terraces around its common. Thamesmead was built by the Greater London Council on former marshland, much of it Arsenal land, with the first homes occupied in 1968. Because the area flooded in 1953, many early homes put living rooms on the first floor. Later phases were built in brick, and Thamesmead is split between Greenwich and Bexley.

Royal Hill and Maidenstone Hill add more Georgian and early Victorian terraces near the town centre, while the Greenwich Peninsula, home of the O2, has become one of the borough’s main areas of large new residential development.

Planning with the Royal Borough of Greenwich

The council has 23 conservation areas, including Blackheath, Blackheath Park, Ashburnham Triangle, East Greenwich, West Greenwich, Charlton Village, Eltham Palace, Progress Estate, Shrewsbury Park Estate, Plumstead Common, Royal Arsenal Woolwich and Woolwich Common. Article 4 directions apply in Ashburnham Triangle, East Greenwich, Progress Estate, Rectory Field, Shrewsbury Park Estate and West Greenwich. These remove some permitted development rights, so check the direction for your street with the Royal Borough of Greenwich before choosing new windows or doors.

Flats, which make up much of the new housing on Greenwich Peninsula and in Woolwich, have no householder permitted development rights, and leaseholders will normally need freeholder consent. See our guide to planning permission for replacement windows.

What to expect from a Fifield-based installer

We have no South East London office or showroom, so the survey comes to you with samples of frame colours, glass and handles. We measure every opening and check access and parking. Prices for aluminium windows start from £400, and our cost guide explains the rest. Aluminium frames are made in Fifield, with lead times from 10 days, and our own team fits them and clears away the old windows. Installations carry a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the windows on my Progress Estate house in Eltham?

Check first. The Progress Estate is a conservation area with an Article 4 direction, which removes some permitted development rights, so changing windows or doors may need planning permission. Contact the Royal Borough of Greenwich planning team with your address. We can survey and supply a written specification to support any application you make.

What suits a Span house in Blackheath?

Span houses have large areas of glazing and simple lines, so slim aluminium frames such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement are a natural fit. Blackheath Park is a conservation area, so check with the Royal Borough of Greenwich before ordering replacement windows.

Do you work in Thamesmead?

Yes, we cover Thamesmead on both the Greenwich and Bexley sides. Many homes there are flats or terraced town houses, some owned or managed by a housing association, so check whether you need landlord or freeholder consent first. Flats also lack householder permitted development rights, so planning permission may be needed.

How long is the drive from your workshop to Greenwich?

Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor. Greenwich is roughly 38 miles by road, and the drive usually takes around an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half depending on route and traffic. We plan surveys and fitting days ahead and start early so the job is finished the same day where possible.

How much are aluminium windows in Greenwich?

Our aluminium windows start from £400. The final price depends on window sizes, the number of openings, the frame system, glass and colour choices, and access. After a free survey you get a written quote. Our double glazing cost guide explains how each of these factors affects the overall price of a project.
