Double Glazing in Winchester: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

We install double glazing in Winchester using aluminium windows and doors fabricated in our own Fifield workshop, plus UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. Inspired Glazing is based near Windsor, roughly 50 miles from Winchester by road; the drive down the M3 is usually around an hour. Our own surveyors and fitters make the trip, and because of the distance we plan each survey and installation in advance.

One city, very different houses

Winchester is Hampshire’s county town and one of England’s oldest cities, built on the Roman town of Venta Belgarum, with a street plan laid out under Alfred the Great. That depth of history shows in its buildings. The centre is medieval and Georgian, tightly packed around the cathedral, the Buttercross and the High Street. Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas spread out around the station. Stanmore, begun in 1920 and opened in 1923, is a classic early council estate of red-brick houses with plenty of green space. Further out, Weeke, Harestock, Badger Farm and Oliver’s Battery are largely post-war and later suburbs.

For us that means a city-centre survey and a Badger Farm survey are different jobs. One is about planning and appearance; the other is mostly about performance, security and budget.

Winchester’s conservation areas

Winchester City Council is the planning authority for the city and the surrounding district, which has 37 conservation areas. The Winchester Conservation Area covers much of the historic city, and nearby villages such as Kings Worthy, Twyford, Littleton and Compton Street have their own. The council publishes boundary maps for each. Before changing windows in a conservation area, a listed building or a flat, check with Winchester City Council; flats have no householder permitted development rights, and student or rental flats near the centre usually need the freeholder’s consent as well. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows is a useful starting point.

Winchester also sits at the western end of the South Downs National Park, which begins at St Catherine’s Hill, just south-east of the city beside the River Itchen. Around 11,500 people in the Winchester district live inside the park. If your home falls inside the park, the South Downs National Park Authority makes the planning decisions.

Our recommendations by house type

Period terraces and villas

The Reynaers SlimLine 68 is our core aluminium window: an outward-opening casement with narrow sightlines, made in our workshop. It suits Edwardian casement openings and modern extensions to older houses. We do not make timber windows or timber sashes, so if a listed building or a strict conservation setting needs timber, we will say so.

Stanmore and post-war suburbs

UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a dependable, cost-effective choice for semis and terraces. Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows give a crisper look if your budget stretches; aluminium windows start from £400.

Entrances, gardens and extensions

Choose a composite door for the front, and for the back either bifold doors from Smart Visofold or Cortizo or Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors. We also build conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns.

Areas we visit around Winchester

We work across the city, including Stanmore, Weeke, Harestock, Badger Farm and Oliver’s Battery, and in Kings Worthy, Littleton and Twyford. Further south and west we have pages for Eastleigh, Romsey and Andover.

How a Winchester job is organised

We book your free survey for a set day and time, measure up, check the openings and discuss any planning points. You receive a written quote; our double glazing cost guide explains what affects it. After you order, aluminium frames are made in Fifield with lead times from 10 days. Fitting days are planned around the M3 journey so the team arrives early with everything on the van. The work carries a 10-year guarantee.

One practical point for city-centre homes: parking and access in the old streets around the cathedral and the High Street can be tight. Tell us at survey where a van can stop and whether frames will need carrying through the house, and we will plan the day, and any permits, around it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Winchester house in a conservation area?

Quite possibly, if it is in or near the historic centre. The Winchester Conservation Area covers much of the old city, and the district has 37 conservation areas in total. Winchester City Council publishes boundary maps for each one on its website. Check the map, and ask the council before changing windows on a listed or conservation area property.

Can you fit timber sash windows in Winchester?

No. We do not make timber windows or doors. We make aluminium windows, mainly the Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement, and supply UPVC and composite products. Woodgrain UPVC and heritage aluminium colours give a traditional look with less upkeep. Where the council requires timber on a listed building, a specialist joiner is the right choice.

How far is Winchester from Inspired Glazing?

We are based at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, about 50 miles from Winchester by road, usually around an hour via the M3. We have no Winchester office. Our own team travels down for surveys and installations, and we plan those visits in advance so the fitters arrive with all the frames and materials needed.

I live in a flat near Winchester city centre. Can I replace the windows?

Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so replacement windows may need planning permission, and in a conservation area that is more likely. You will usually also need the freeholder's or managing agent's consent under your lease. Check with Winchester City Council and your freeholder first; we can provide specifications to support both.

What do aluminium windows cost in Winchester?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window. The final price depends on size, opening style, colour, glass specification and the number of windows. Our double glazing cost guide explains these factors, and the free survey gives you a fixed written quote. We do not add a separate travel charge to the survey.
