From railway junction to garden town
Few towns show their growth as plainly as Didcot. Brunel’s station opened here in 1844, and the railway drew workers to a new settlement that sprang up beside the old village. In 2015 the government named Didcot a garden town, the first existing town to receive that status, and the building has not stopped since. The result is a mix you rarely find in one postcode:
- Old Didcot, the original village core, now a conservation area.
- Northbourne, laid out from the 1860s as a workers’ settlement and known locally by 1887 as New Town. It also has conservation area status.
- Station Road, where the Great Western Railway built its own staff housing in 1904.
- Ladygrove, built from the late 1980s on former marshland north and east of the railway.
- Great Western Park, the large planned estate to the west, part of which falls in the Vale of White Horse district.
Station Road and the Article 4 direction
If you live on Station Road, read this before ordering anything. South Oxfordshire District Council’s appraisal records that an Article 4 direction was served on the conservation area in 1992. It removes certain permitted development rights, so planning permission is needed to change windows or doors there. The appraisal describes multi-paned casements on the terraces and two-over-two sashes on the detached houses, and treats the original Edwardian glazing bars as worth keeping. We do not make timber windows. Check with South Oxfordshire District Council about what it would accept, and we can provide drawings to support the conversation. For homes in the Old Didcot and Northbourne conservation areas, the same advice applies: ask the council first. Our page on planning permission for replacement windows covers the basics.
Choosing products for Didcot homes
Victorian and Edwardian brick terraces. Our aluminium windows are led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening casement with narrow frames that suits older proportions. Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows broaden the choice of style and price.
Ladygrove and 1990s houses. If your house still has its original double glazing and the units have misted or the seals have gone, it may be time to replace them. Our UPVC windows and doors use the Selecta Advance 70 system, and a composite door is a low-maintenance upgrade for the front of the house.
Newer estates. On recent builds the windows are often fine, and the job people ask about is the back of the house. We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding patio doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo aluminium bifold doors. If you want more space, take a look at our conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns. Check whether your title deeds or estate covenants have anything to say about external changes.
Villages around Didcot
Didcot sits at the heart of the Science Vale, with the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus and the Milton and Culham sites close by. Whichever part of the town you live in, the same team handles your survey and your fitting. We also cover East Hagbourne, Blewbury, Harwell, Long Wittenham and Sutton Courtenay. Blewbury sits at the foot of the downs in the North Wessex Downs, and it has many timber-framed and chalk-walled older houses, so expect to talk to the council if your home is historic. For neighbouring towns, see our Abingdon and Wantage pages.
Survey, manufacture and fitting
We start with a call or a few WhatsApp photos. Then a surveyor visits, measures every opening and talks you through frames, colours, glass and hardware at home. You receive a written quote. Aluminium windows start from £400, and our guide to double glazing costs explains what moves the price. Once you approve the measurements, aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days. Our own fitters install them, and the work carries a 10-year guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need planning permission for new windows on Station Road, Didcot?
Very likely. South Oxfordshire District Council served an Article 4 direction on the Station Road conservation area in 1992, which removes permitted development rights for changing windows and doors. Contact the council before ordering. We can supply drawings and product information to support an application, but we cannot promise what the council will approve.
Are the Old Didcot and Northbourne areas conservation areas?
Yes. South Oxfordshire District Council lists Didcot Old Area and Didcot Northbourne Area as designated conservation areas, alongside Station Road. Rules for replacing windows can differ from house to house, especially for listed buildings, so check with the council's conservation team before you commit to new frames.
My Ladygrove windows have misted up. Do I need new frames?
Not always. Misting between the panes means the sealed unit has failed, which can sometimes be fixed by replacing the glass alone. If the frames are also tired, draughty or the hinges are worn, full replacement is usually better value. Our surveyor will look at both options and tell you honestly which makes sense.
How far do you travel to reach Didcot?
We drive from our workshop at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Depending on the route, it is roughly 35 to 45 miles, usually around an hour each way. We have no office or showroom in Didcot, so we bring samples to the survey and the same team handles both the survey and the fitting.
What is the lead time for aluminium windows?
Lead times start from 10 days after you approve the final survey measurements, because we fabricate aluminium frames ourselves in Fifield. Larger jobs, special colours or sliding and bifold doors can take longer. We give you a realistic date when you place the order and confirm the installation day in advance.
