Market town on the Kennet
Newbury is built around a large market square, with a rare medieval Cloth Hall, the 15th-century St Nicolas Church and a good stock of 17th and 18th-century listed buildings. The Kennet and Avon Canal and the River Kennet run east through the middle of town, the Lambourn meets them from the north and the Enborne marks the southern edge. The town is surrounded on the north, west and south by the North Wessex Downs National Landscape, and the ground rises from about 72 metres by the river to 122 metres at Wash Common.
Wartime bombing in 1943 damaged 265 homes, many of which were demolished, so parts of the centre mix older frontages with post-war rebuilding. Beyond the core, the town parish takes in Wash Common, Speenhamland, East and West Fields and The City, with Speen, Shaw, Donnington and Greenham forming the wider town. Between them they cover period terraces, interwar houses and large post-war estates. Greenham and Crookham commons, once an air base, reopened as heathland in 2000.
Newbury’s conservation areas
West Berkshire Council is the planning authority. Newbury has several conservation areas: Newbury Town Centre, Donnington Square, Shaw Road and Crescent, Shaw House and Church, and the Kennet and Avon Canal East and West areas, with Speen and Donnington Village close by. The town centre area, first designated in 1971, is under review, and the council has consulted on changes to its boundary.
If your home is in one of these areas, is listed or is a flat, check with West Berkshire Council before you order. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so planning permission may be required alongside the freeholder’s consent. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows is a good starting point.
What we fit, and where it works
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Our aluminium windows are led by the outward-opening Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement, whose slim frames keep older openings looking light. Cortizo and Alunet provide alternatives. We do not make timber windows or doors, so for listed buildings that need timber we will tell you up front.
Interwar and post-war family homes
In Wash Common, Shaw and Greenham, UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a dependable replacement, with woodgrain finishes for a traditional look. A composite front door completes the frontage.
Extensions and garden rooms
Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors suit modern kitchen extensions. We also build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns, and fit secondary glazing, garage doors and fascias, soffits and guttering.
Road noise and riverside plots
The A34 Newbury Bypass, opened in 1998, runs along the west of the town. If you live near it or another busy road, ask about acoustic glass at survey. For homes close to the Kennet, Lambourn or canal, check the Environment Agency flood map; we factor ground levels into how new doors are set.
The process from Fifield
- Free survey: we measure every opening and talk through finishes and glass.
- Written quote: aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our double glazing cost guide explains the variables.
- Manufacture in Fifield, with lead times from 10 days.
- Installation by our own fitters, including removal of old frames.
All our work carries a 10-year guarantee; we hold Constructionline Silver and are listed as a Reynaers at Home installer partner.
We work for landlords as well as owner-occupiers. Census figures for 2011 showed that more than a third of homes in Newbury parish were rented, socially or privately, so we are used to arranging access with tenants and agents and quoting for several properties at once.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have a showroom in Newbury?
No. Our only premises are our workshop and office at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 40 miles from Newbury and around 45 minutes to an hour by road. We bring samples of frames, colours, glass and handles to your home at the free survey, so you can choose in your own surroundings.
Can I fit new windows in the Newbury Town Centre conservation area?
Possibly, but check first. West Berkshire Council is the planning authority and is reviewing the Newbury Town Centre Conservation Area. Listed buildings and flats need consent whatever their location. Check with West Berkshire Council before ordering, and we can supply drawings and product details to support any application.
What windows suit a Victorian terrace in Newbury?
For a slim, clean look, our aluminium casements led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68 work well in many older openings, with Cortizo and Alunet as alternatives. Woodgrain UPVC is a lower-cost option. We do not make timber or vertical sliding sash windows, so if your terrace needs those we will tell you honestly.
Will new windows cut noise from the A34 bypass?
Modern, well-sealed double glazing reduces traffic noise noticeably compared with old, leaky frames. For homes close to the A34 bypass or other main roads, laminated acoustic glass can reduce it further. We can explain the options and their cost at survey so you can decide whether the upgrade is worth it for your rooms.
How long does it take to get new windows in Newbury?
Our aluminium frames are fabricated in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days once measurements and choices are confirmed. We then agree an installation date with you. Our own fitters travel over, remove the old frames, fit and seal the new ones and leave the house tidy, and the work carries a 10-year guarantee.
