Double Glazing in Romsey: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

If you are pricing double glazing in Romsey, Inspired Glazing can survey, make and fit aluminium windows and doors, UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories for your home. We fabricate our aluminium frames in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and install with our own fitters. We have no Romsey branch: the town is roughly 60 miles from Fifield by road, usually around an hour and a quarter down the M3, so our team travels from Fifield and we book surveys and fitting days in advance around that journey.

Romsey’s houses, from the Abbey outwards

Romsey grew up around its Norman abbey church, and the old market town still shows it. The street plan is medieval, but the look is mostly Georgian and Victorian: Church Street, Bell Street and The Hundred converge on the Market Place, lined with red-brick frontages under clay or slate roofs, and several older timber-framed buildings were simply refronted in Georgian style. Victorian terraces run along Cherville Street and the Horsefair, and Station Road grew into a small Victorian suburb once the railway arrived. Timber sliding sashes are the typical original window, with some casements.

Beyond the centre the picture changes. Twentieth-century growth around neighbourhoods such as Cupernham added semis, bungalows and estate houses, and Abbotswood, just north-east of the town, has added around 800 new homes since building began in 2011, all of them double glazed from the start. Each of these needs a different conversation: an Abbotswood owner is usually after better doors or a garden room, while a cottage near the Abbey raises questions about sightlines and planning.

The Romsey conservation area

Much of the historic town lies within the Romsey conservation area, and Test Valley Borough Council published an updated appraisal and management plan for it in December 2020, after a public consultation that autumn. Test Valley handles planning for Romsey and the surrounding villages, so if your home is listed, sits in the conservation area or is a flat, check with Test Valley Borough Council before you order anything. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so window changes there can need consent and the freeholder’s agreement. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows covers the general position.

The town also sits in the Test valley, threaded by branches of the river and the Tadburn and Holbrook streams, and the Environment Agency has a flood alleviation scheme for Romsey. Flood risk does not limit the windows you can choose, but check the Environment Agency flood map before planning a ground-floor extension or conservatory.

Older town-centre properties

Our main aluminium window is the Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening casement with narrow frames that suits older openings without the bulk of a standard replacement. We also fabricate Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows. We do not make timber windows or doors, so where an original timber sash look matters we talk through slim aluminium or woodgrain-finish UPVC, and what the council is likely to accept.

Semis, bungalows and family houses

For post-war homes, UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a practical, good-value way to replace tired frames. A composite front door gives a solid, low-maintenance entrance in a wide range of colours.

Gardens and extensions

Opening a kitchen to the garden is a project we are happy to quote for. Bifold doors come from Smart Visofold or Cortizo, and large glazed sliders are Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors. For extra space we build conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns, as well as porches.

Villages around Romsey

From Romsey we also cover North Baddesley, Ampfield, Braishfield, Timsbury and Awbridge, and Nursling on the way towards Southampton. Neighbouring pages cover double glazing in Totton, Eastleigh and Salisbury.

From survey to fitting

We start with a free survey at your home, measuring every opening and discussing glass, colours, handles and any planning points. You then receive a written quote; aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our double glazing cost guide explains what affects the figure. Aluminium frames are made in Fifield with lead times from 10 days. On the fitting day our own team drives down, removes the old frames, installs and seals the new ones and clears up. Larger Romsey jobs are scheduled across consecutive days so the work runs straight through.

Every installation carries a 10-year guarantee. We hold Constructionline Silver and are listed as a Reynaers at Home installer partner.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a showroom near Romsey?

No. Our only premises are at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, where we make our aluminium windows and doors. Romsey is roughly 60 miles away by road, about an hour and a quarter's drive, so our surveyors and fitters travel from Fifield on days we plan in advance for you.

Can I replace windows in the Romsey conservation area?

Often yes, but it depends on the building. Listed properties need listed building consent, and homes in the conservation area may face extra controls on appearance. Flats have no householder permitted development rights. Check with Test Valley Borough Council before ordering, and we can supply drawings and product details to support your enquiry.

What would you suggest for a Georgian or Victorian house near the Abbey?

We do not make timber windows, so for older Romsey houses we usually suggest the Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casement, which has slim frames, or woodgrain-finish UPVC. Which one suits depends on the building and what Test Valley will accept, so we talk it through at the survey before you commit to anything.

My Abbotswood house already has double glazing. What can you add?

Newer homes usually come to us for doors and garden rooms rather than windows. Popular jobs include swapping a standard patio door for Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliders or Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds, fitting a composite front door, or adding a conservatory, orangery or roof lantern. Check any estate covenants first.

How long does a Romsey installation take from order?

Aluminium windows and doors are fabricated in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days after the final survey. Fitting a typical house takes one to a few days depending on the number of openings, and we book consecutive days for larger jobs so the team is not travelling back and forth unnecessarily.
