Southampton homeowners looking for double glazing can come to Inspired Glazing for aluminium windows and doors fabricated in our own workshop, plus UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories, all fitted by our own team. Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor, and we have no Southampton office. The city is roughly 60 miles from us by road, normally around an hour and a quarter via the M3, and our surveyors and fitters travel down from Fifield on dates we arrange in advance.

A port city rebuilt more than once
Southampton’s housing tells the story of the docks and the war. Victorian expansion pushed terraced streets out through Freemantle, Shirley, Portswood and the Polygon, and many of those bay-fronted terraces survive. The Blitz then took a heavy toll: thousands of buildings were destroyed or damaged, including the Spitfire works at Woolston and the houses around it, and only pockets of Georgian architecture made it through. Post-war council estates followed at Weston, Thornhill and Townhill Park, and more recent building has been dominated by flats, from city-centre blocks to the new homes planned around the Bargate Quarter beside the medieval walls.
There are quieter, leafier parts too. In Highfield and Bassett Green, Herbert Collins built cottage-style estates between the wars: the Uplands estate from 1922 to 1936, and the Bassett Green estate around Ethelburt Avenue from the late 1920s. Their simple brick houses and small-paned windows give these streets a strong, consistent character.
Southampton’s planning rules for windows
Southampton City Council has around 20 conservation areas. They include the Uplands Estate conservation area, designated in 1986, Ethelburt Avenue (Bassett Green Estate), designated in 1988, Carlton Crescent, and the Old Town areas within the medieval walls, such as Old Town West. On Canton Street, an Article 4 direction confirmed in 2016 covers numbers 1 to 46 and removes some permitted development rights. If you live in a conservation area, a listed building or a flat, check with Southampton City Council before ordering new windows or doors. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so replacements can need planning permission as well as the freeholder’s consent. Our guide to replacement windows and planning gives the general picture.
Choosing for your type of Southampton home
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
In Shirley, Portswood and Freemantle we mostly fit UPVC windows using the Selecta Advance 70 system, which offers good value and a choice of woodgrain finishes. Where a slimmer profile matters, our aluminium range includes the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, plus Cortizo and Alunet windows.
Collins estates and character homes
We do not make timber windows or doors, so on the Uplands and Bassett Green estates the first step is checking what the council will accept. Slim aluminium casements or woodgrain UPVC are the options we can offer.
Post-war houses and newer homes
Estate houses in Bitterne, Sholing, Weston and Thornhill are straightforward replacements. Many owners also want to open up the back of the house with Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors or Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, and a composite front door completes the job. We also build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns.
Where we work around the city
We cover the whole city, from Shirley, Freemantle and Portswood to Highfield, Bassett, Bitterne, Sholing and Woolston across the Itchen, booking surveys so that neighbouring streets share a visit where we can. Just outside the city boundary, see our pages for Totton, Eastleigh and Hedge End.

Frequently asked questions
Can I replace the windows on a Herbert Collins house in Highfield or Bassett Green?
Possibly, but both the Uplands Estate and Ethelburt Avenue (Bassett Green Estate) are conservation areas, and their consistent design is part of what they protect. Check with Southampton City Council before ordering. We do not make timber windows, so we would discuss slim aluminium or woodgrain UPVC alternatives and supply details for any application.
How far do you travel to reach Southampton?
Our only base is our workshop and office in Fifield, near Windsor. Southampton is roughly 60 miles away by road, usually around an hour and a quarter's drive down the M3. Our own surveyors and fitters make that journey, and we schedule Southampton surveys and installations in advance so everything arrives together.
Do you replace windows in Southampton flats?
Yes, subject to consent. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so replacement windows usually need planning permission from Southampton City Council, and your lease will normally require the freeholder's approval. Once you have those in hand, or while you apply, we can survey and quote so you have product details to submit.
What does double glazing cost in Southampton?
Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window. The final price depends on size, the number of openings, glass, colour and hardware, and on whether doors or a conservatory are involved. We give a fixed written quote after a free survey, and our cost guide explains the main factors so there are no surprises.
Which is better for a Victorian terrace in Shirley: UPVC or aluminium?
Both work. UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system is usually the most cost-effective and comes in woodgrain finishes. Aluminium, such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement, gives slimmer frames and a crisper look, at a higher price. We bring samples to the survey so you can compare them in your own rooms.
