A naval town on its own peninsula

Gosport faces Portsmouth across the harbour mouth, and for three centuries its fortunes followed the Navy. The town was ringed by the Gosport Lines from the late seventeenth century, Royal Hospital Haslar opened in 1753, and Royal Clarence Yard supplied the fleet from 1828 until 1992. When the services pulled back, many of these sites became homes: there are now flats and houses at Royal Clarence Yard, in the converted Haslar hospital buildings and on the site of the New Barracks. Living in a listed former naval building is very different from living in a 1960s semi, and the windows reflect that.

Elsewhere the housing is varied. Older terraced streets run back from the harbour around the High Street and Forton. Alverstoke, south and west of Stoke Lake, keeps the feel of a village with listed cottages and larger period houses. Inland, Elson, Bridgemary and Brockhurst are mainly post-war estates, and in Rowner much of the former naval married quarters has been demolished and rebuilt. By the harbour front stand the Seaward and Harbour towers, built in 1963.

Eighteen conservation areas

For a borough of its size, Gosport has a lot of protected townscape. Gosport Borough Council lists eighteen conservation areas, including Anglesey and Alverstoke, Stokes Bay, Lee-on-the-Solent, Stoke Road, Bury Road, High Street, Royal Clarence Yard, Haslar Peninsula, Priddy’s Hard and the Gosport Lines areas around Trinity Green and the St George Barracks. Anglesey and Alverstoke alone holds 37 listed buildings, among them the Grade II* listed Crescent. If your home is in one of these areas, is listed or is a flat, check with Gosport Borough Council before ordering new windows or doors. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so replacements need consent and usually the freeholder’s agreement. Read our replacement windows and planning guide for the basics.

Sea air and the Solent shore

From Stokes Bay to Lee-on-the-Solent, Gosport homes sit close to open water and take the wind and salt that come with it. Careful sealing and drainage matter more here than on an inland street. Whatever frames you choose, rinse them and their hardware with fresh water from time to time and keep drainage slots clear.

Survey, quote and fit

We begin with a free survey at home, measuring every opening and noting access, especially in converted naval buildings where communal stairs and lifts affect how frames come in. Your written quote follows; aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our double glazing cost guide explains the variables. We fabricate the aluminium frames in Fifield, with lead times from 10 days. Our own fitters then travel down, remove the old units, fit and seal the new ones and clear away. Larger orders are fitted over consecutive days to make the most of each trip.

Everything we install has a 10-year guarantee. As well as being a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner, we hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace windows in a converted naval building like Royal Clarence Yard or Haslar?

Possibly, but these are usually listed buildings or flats within conservation areas, so consent from Gosport Borough Council and the freeholder or management company is likely to be needed first. Flats have no householder permitted development rights. We can survey and provide product details and drawings to support the application before anything is ordered.

Do you have a branch in Gosport or Fareham?

No. Our only base is our workshop and office at Coningsby Farm, Fifield, near Windsor. Gosport is roughly 75 miles away by road, around an hour and a half's drive, so our team travels from Fifield. We plan Gosport surveys and installations in advance around the journey.

Is my Alverstoke home in a conservation area?

Much of old Alverstoke falls within the Anglesey and Alverstoke conservation area, one of eighteen in the borough. Gosport Borough Council publishes maps and appraisals for each, so check with the council using your address. If your house is inside one, extra controls may apply to visible changes such as windows and doors.

What windows are best for a house near Stokes Bay or Lee-on-the-Solent?

Both aluminium and UPVC perform well by the coast when properly installed. The Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casement gives slim, rigid frames, while UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system is the cost-effective option. Good sealing, clear drainage and an occasional freshwater rinse matter more than the material.

How soon could you fit new windows in Gosport?

After the final survey, aluminium windows are fabricated in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days. We then agree a fitting date that suits you and our travel schedule. A typical house takes one to a few days to complete, and larger jobs are booked on consecutive days.
