Aluminium bifold doors opening onto a garden โ€“ Brookmans Park

Brookmans Park houses and how bifolds fit

Brookmans Park grew as a planned commuter village after the station opened in 1926, with substantial detached houses on wide, tree-lined roads. Many of those 1920s and 1930s homes have since been extended to the rear or rebuilt, and plots are often generous. The surrounding North Mymms countryside is largely Green Belt, which keeps the setting open.

For these houses, a bifold is a strong choice when the family wants the kitchen or living room to open wide onto a patio in summer. Leaves can stack to one side, split to both, or fold around a corner in an L-shaped extension. A traffic door means you are not opening the full set every time you let the dog out.

Our two bifold systems

Smart Visofold 1000

Each Visofold sash can be up to 1200mm wide and 2500mm high. Smart Systems publishes a U-value of 1.4 W/mยฒK, a 30mm polyamide thermal break and a 122mm typical sightline, and lists a low threshold option for flatter access to the patio. Dual colour is available, so you can pick different finishes inside and out. More is on our Smart Systems page.

Cortizo Bi-Fold

Cortizo allows leaves of 1200mm by 3000mm at up to 120kg, with between 1 and 14 sashes and either inward or outward opening. It holds PAS 24 test approval and has a quoted U-value from 0.97 W/mยฒK. Tall leaves suit replacement homes and extensions built with higher ceilings. Explore the Cortizo systems we fabricate, or read our Visofold versus Cortizo guide. Configuration changes the maximums, so ask us to confirm for your opening.

Planning in Welwyn Hatfield

Brookmans Park is in the North Mymms parish within Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s area. Green Belt policy can affect how far a house may be extended, and some properties have restrictive covenants from the original estate. New doors within an existing opening are often simpler than a new extension, but check with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council if your plans enlarge the house or your property is listed. Our planning permission guide gives general background.

Working alongside your builder

Many Brookmans Park projects involve a main contractor building an extension. We can review the architect’s drawings, recommend structural opening sizes and head details, and agree threshold drainage before the slab is poured. Driveways here usually make delivery straightforward, though side access and garden gates still need checking for longer leaves.

Travel from Fifield

Brookmans Park is about 26 miles from Fifield in a straight line. By road via the M25 it is usually 50 minutes to an hour, longer at peak times. Our team travels from Fifield to survey and install, and we plan visits to avoid the worst of the motorway traffic.

Choosing colours, glass and handles

Brookmans Park houses range from interwar detached designs to crisp modern rebuilds, so finish choices differ. A dark exterior frame often suits rendered or brick rear elevations, while lighter frames can work with a traditional style. Glass specification affects comfort in a large family room, and solar control is worth considering on a south-facing rear. Handles and locking are chosen to suit how often you will use the traffic door. Our survey covers these points, and we confirm them in writing before fabrication begins. We can also look at matching aluminium windows if other openings on the rear are due for replacement.

Prefer a slider?

For a wide garden view with fewer frames, look at aluminium sliding doors in Brookmans Park and bifold vs sliding doors. We also work on bifold doors in Hadley Wood, bifold doors in Radlett and bifold doors in Hampstead Garden Suburb.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover Brookmans Park from Windsor?

Yes. Our only premises is the Fifield workshop near Windsor, about 26 miles from Brookmans Park in a straight line and usually 50 minutes to an hour by road via the M25. Our own team travels to survey and fit. We plan appointments around motorway traffic so time on site is used well.

Will Green Belt rules stop me adding bifold doors?

Changing doors within an existing opening is generally less sensitive than extending, because Green Belt policy mainly limits additions to a building. If the bifolds form part of a new extension, or the house is listed, check with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council early so the design and the planning route are agreed before ordering.

What size opening can bifolds cover?

Cortizo Bi-Fold can run from 1 to 14 sashes, each up to 1200mm wide, while Visofold 1000 sashes are up to 1200mm wide and 2500mm high. Very wide sets are possible, though more leaves mean a deeper stack when open. We will suggest a panel count that balances opening width and stack size.

Can bifolds have a level threshold onto my patio?

Visofold 1000 has a low threshold option, which gives a much flatter step than a standard sill. A truly level finish depends on the floor build-up and drainage outside, so it needs planning with your builder. We advise on drainage channels and falls so a low threshold does not invite water into the room.

Are bifolds a good choice for a family home?

Many families like them because the kitchen opens completely onto the garden in summer, and a traffic door handles everyday comings and goings. Finger-safe gaskets and robust hardware are worth discussing for homes with young children. We explain the handles, locking and maintenance at survey so you know how the doors will be used.
