Inspired Glazing fabricates and fits aluminium bifold doors for homes in Radlett, choosing between Smart Systems Visofold and Cortizo folding systems and building every set in our Fifield workshop. Radlett’s large detached houses, many of them set well back in substantial grounds, tend to have broad rear elevations and long gardens, and a bifold across a kitchen or family room opens that whole side of the house to the terrace. Lead times start from 10 days, the installation is carried out by our own team, and we guarantee the work for 10 years.

The Radlett house and its rear elevation
Radlett’s character comes from several periods. Hertsmere’s appraisal of the Radlett South Conservation Area describes Loom Lane houses with Arts and Crafts influence, gables and tall chimneys, Edwardian terraces on Watling Street, inter-war mock-Tudor homes at Rose Walk, and detached houses in substantial grounds to the south. Beyond the conservation areas, the roads are lined with large detached family homes, many extended over the years.
Those extensions are where bifolds usually go. A single-storey kitchen extension or garden room with a full-width folding door gives the most direct connection to the garden, and because the panels stack at the side, the opening is nearly as wide as the structure allows. On a house with an L-shaped or stepped rear wall, folding doors can follow the turns where a slider would need separate frames.
Which folding system fits your extension
Smart Systems Visofold 1000 is our most common choice for openings up to 2,500mm high. Each sash can be up to 1,200mm wide, typical sightlines are 122mm, and the frames are thermally broken, with dual colour available. The standard roller is PAS 24 approved, and there is a low threshold option. Our Smart Systems windows and bifolds page has more detail.
For taller extensions, the Cortizo folding door accepts leaves up to 3,000mm high and 120kg. It can be set to open inward or outward, can run up to seven sashes in each direction, and can form a post-free 90-degree corner. Glazing up to 45mm thick suits heavier acoustic or laminated units. See our Cortizo product page, our side-by-side Visofold and Cortizo guide, and our aluminium bifold doors hub.
Planning with Hertsmere Borough Council
Radlett lies in Hertsmere, so Hertsmere Borough Council is the planning authority. Radlett has two conservation areas, Radlett North and Radlett South, and the council has recommended Article 4 directions for certain buildings within them, which would remove some permitted development rights. Check with Hertsmere Borough Council whether your house is affected before you commit to an extension or a new opening. Outside those areas, many rear extensions can go ahead under permitted development, subject to size limits. Our page on planning permission for replacement windows explains the general position.
From Fifield to Radlett
Radlett is about 21 miles from our workshop in a straight line, and the drive round the M25 normally takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. The team travels from Fifield to survey the opening, then returns with the finished doors. Where a house has a driveway, deliveries are usually simple, and we confirm access and parking during the survey visit either way.
Specifying a bifold for a large family home
- Width and panel count: wider openings may suit six or seven sashes, but fewer, larger sashes reduce frames in the view.
- Opening direction: outward-opening keeps the kitchen clear, inward-opening protects the patio space.
- Threshold: choose a low threshold for a near-level step, or a weathered sill for an exposed elevation.
- Everyday door: one hinged sash within the set saves folding the whole run each time; ask us to confirm it suits your layout.
- Glass: ask us about solar control or laminated glass for a south-facing or ground-floor elevation.
Weighing up a sliding door
If your garden is long and you want the largest possible panes, a sliding door could suit you better. Our bifold vs sliding door comparison sets out the trade-offs, and our Radlett sliding doors page covers that option. We also install bifolds in Brookmans Park, Moor Park and Hadley Wood.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need planning permission for bifold doors in Radlett?
Replacing an existing door with a bifold of a similar size often needs no permission, and many rear extensions are permitted development within size limits. Homes in the Radlett North or Radlett South conservation areas, listed buildings and properties with Article 4 directions are different. Check with Hertsmere Borough Council before you commit to the design.
How far do you travel to Radlett?
Radlett is roughly 21 miles from our Fifield workshop in a straight line, usually 45 minutes to an hour by road via the M25. Our own team surveys the opening, fabricates the doors in Fifield and comes back to install them, so there is no handover to a separate fitting company.
What is the widest bifold door you can fit?
Width is built up from individual sashes. Visofold 1000 sashes are up to 1,200mm wide, and the Cortizo folding door can run up to seven sashes in each direction, each up to 1,200mm wide. The structural opening and the support above it set the practical limit, which we check at survey.
Can bifold doors open inwards?
Yes. The Cortizo folding system is designed for both inward and outward opening, and most bifolds can be arranged either way. Outward opening is the more common choice because it keeps the room clear, while inward opening leaves the terrace free. We will recommend a direction once we have seen how the space is used.
Will new bifold doors work with an older Radlett house?
Usually, yes, especially on a rear extension. Visofold offers a heritage sash profile and dual-colour frames, so the outside can be matched to brick, tile and render while the inside suits your interior. If the house is in a conservation area or listed, discuss the design with Hertsmere Borough Council first.
