Inspired Glazing provides double glazing in Barking and Dagenham for houses on the Becontree Estate, older streets around Barking town centre and newer homes towards the river: aluminium, UPVC and composite windows and doors, plus porches and conservatories. We make our aluminium frames at our own workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, and install them with our own fitters. There is no branch in east London. The borough is roughly 45 miles from Fifield by road, typically an hour and a half or more depending on North Circular or M25 traffic, so we arrange survey and fitting dates ahead of time.

Becontree: the estate that shapes the borough
Any account of homes in this borough starts with Becontree. Built by the London County Council between 1921 and 1935 as “Homes for Heroes” for families moving out of the East End, it has about 26,000 homes and was the largest municipal estate in the world when it was finished. Roughly half of it lies in Dagenham, a third in Barking and the rest in the former Ilford section, which moved into the borough in 1994. It was laid out on cottage-estate lines, with private gardens and, originally, sash windows.
Barking and Dagenham Council now treats the estate as a non-designated heritage asset and has prepared a Becontree Estate design code. Its Cabinet approved two Article 4 directions in November 2025, due to be introduced in November 2026: one covering porches on every Becontree property and one covering side and roof alterations on corner plots. Neither is about windows, but anyone planning a new porch should check with Barking and Dagenham Council first, and it is worth reading the design code before choosing new frames or a front door.
Beyond the estate
The borough’s four conservation areas are small and specific: Abbey and Barking Town Centre, around the abbey ruins at Abbey Green; Dagenham Village, around the parish church; Abbey Road Riverside, with the Malthouse and Granary on the River Roding; and the wartime anti-aircraft gun site at Chadwell Heath. If your property is in or next to one of them, or is listed, check with the council before changing windows.
At the other end of the timeline is Barking Riverside on the north bank of the Thames, where the original planning permission was for 10,800 homes and the Overground station opened in July 2022. Bellway had already built around 900 homes on part of the site between 1995 and 2000. Because these homes are recent, a new door, a replacement sealed unit or a garden room may matter more than a full set of windows. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so leaseholders also need their freeholder’s consent.
What fits which home
Becontree cottages and short terraces
For the cottage-style terraces, UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system are a sensible, low-maintenance choice, and a composite front door gives security without repainting. We also build porches; with the new Article 4 direction, porch design is something to agree with the council before work starts.
End-of-terrace and corner houses
Larger corner plots often have room at the back for bifold doors from Smart Visofold or Cortizo, or a Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding door opening onto the garden. A small conservatory or orangery is another option where space allows.
Homes wanting slimmer frames
Our aluminium windows, including the Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement and the Cortizo and Alunet ranges, give narrower profiles in any RAL colour for owners after a more modern look.
We do not make timber windows or doors; woodgrain-effect UPVC, aluminium or composite are our timber-look options.
Areas we cover in the borough
Our team fits across Barking, Dagenham, Becontree, Chadwell Heath, Heath Park, Dagenham Dock and Barking Riverside. Neighbouring boroughs have their own pages: Havering, Redbridge and Newham.
How a survey and installation works
- You call or send a few photos on WhatsApp, and we book a survey date.
- A surveyor drives out from Fifield, measures each opening and goes through colours, glass and handles with you.
- You receive a written quote. Aluminium windows start from £400, and lead times start from 10 days. See our guide to double glazing costs for what drives the price.
- Frames are made to your measurements and our fitters return on an agreed day to remove the old windows and install the new ones.
All our installations come with a 10-year guarantee. If you are unsure whether your project needs consent, read our guide to planning permission for replacement windows.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Becontree Article 4 direction stop me replacing my windows?
The two Becontree Article 4 directions approved in November 2025, due to come in from November 2026, cover porches on all estate properties and side and roof alterations on corner plots. Neither covers windows. The council has also prepared a design code for the estate, so check with Barking and Dagenham Council if you are unsure about your plans.
Can you build a new porch on a Becontree house?
Yes, we design and build porches. Once the Becontree porch direction is in force from November 2026, a new porch on any estate property is likely to need planning permission. Speak to Barking and Dagenham Council before committing, and we can supply drawings and product details for an application.
I live in a flat at Barking Riverside. Can I change my windows?
Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, and leaseholders normally need written consent from the freeholder or managing agent before altering windows or doors. Riverside homes are recent, so a repair or a new door may be all you need. Check your lease first, then book a survey.
How long does the journey from Fifield to Dagenham take?
Barking and Dagenham is roughly 45 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, usually an hour and a half or more depending on the North Circular or the M25. We do not have a local office, so surveys and fitting days are booked in advance and our own team travels out to you.
What is the cheapest way to replace windows in a Dagenham terrace?
For most brick terraces, UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system are our most economical option and need little upkeep. Aluminium windows start from £400 each if you prefer slimmer frames. Replacing all the windows in one visit is usually more efficient than doing them in stages. A free survey gives you an exact written price.
