Brackley then and now

Brackley was a small market town for most of its history; the 1901 census counted fewer than 2,500 people. By 2021 the figure had passed 16,000, so most homes in the town today are twentieth- and twenty-first-century houses spread around a compact historic centre.

That centre is distinctive. The Town Hall, completed in 1706, stands in the Market Place, and the houses and inns along the Market Place and Bridge Street are largely early eighteenth-century, mostly of brick and in several cases laid in a chequer pattern of red and blue. Magdalen College School occupies the former Hospital of St James and St John, and there are almshouses dating from 1633. Around St Peter’s Church to the north lies the Old Town.

Today the town is also home to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, and the A43 bypass links it with Towcester, Northampton and the M40.

For glazing, that history matters. A house on the Market Place built around the same time as the Town Hall calls for a very different conversation from a family home on one of the estates that took the town from a few thousand people to more than sixteen thousand. With the older properties the first question is usually consent; with the newer ones it is more often about tired seals, draughty doors or wanting to open the kitchen up to the garden. We look at both kinds of home in the same careful way, opening by opening, before recommending anything.

Two conservation areas to know about

Brackley has a Brackley Town Conservation Area and a separate Brackley Old Town Conservation Area, the latter designated in 2012 and covering St Peter’s Church and the surrounding streets. Planning is handled by West Northamptonshire Council, which replaced South Northamptonshire District Council in 2021. If your home is listed or falls within either conservation area, check with West Northamptonshire Council before committing to new windows or doors. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so they can also need consent, plus the freeholder’s agreement. The general rules are explained in our guide to planning permission for replacement windows.

Choosing products for a Brackley home

Older brick frontages. We do not make timber windows. For historic buildings we discuss slim aluminium, chiefly the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, or woodgrain-finish options, and we will be clear about what needs consent.

Modern estates. Newer and late twentieth-century houses suit UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system, or Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows if you want slimmer frames and colour choice. A composite front door is a low-maintenance upgrade.

Kitchens and gardens. We install bifold doors from Smart Visofold and Cortizo, and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors. We also build conservatories and orangeries, porches and roof lanterns, and supply secondary glazing, garage doors, fascias and soffits, blinds and shutters.

What happens after you get in touch

A surveyor visits free of charge to measure, look at the condition of the openings and talk about style and glass. You receive a written quote; aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide explains why prices vary. Aluminium frames are fabricated in Fifield with lead times from 10 days. Our fitters then drive up, remove the old units, install and seal the new ones and leave the rooms tidy. Each installation carries a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Which council deals with window planning in Brackley?

West Northamptonshire Council, which took over from South Northamptonshire District Council in 2021. Brackley has two conservation areas, Brackley Town and Brackley Old Town. If your home is listed, in either area, or is a flat, check with West Northamptonshire Council before replacing windows or doors.

Do you have a showroom near Brackley?

No. Our only premises are our workshop at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Brackley is roughly 52 miles away by road, about an hour's drive, so our team travels from Fifield for surveys and fitting. We agree appointment dates with you ahead of time.

What suits an early 18th-century brick house in Brackley?

We do not make timber windows, so we would discuss slim aluminium such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement, or a woodgrain finish. Many older Brackley buildings are listed or in a conservation area, where the council decides what is acceptable, so we would advise checking with West Northamptonshire Council first.

Can you fit bifold doors on a new-build in Brackley?

Yes. We install Smart Visofold and Cortizo aluminium bifolds, and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliders if you prefer fewer, larger panes. Widening an opening can involve structural work, and some newer estates have planning conditions, so we check the opening at survey and suggest confirming any conditions with the council.

How much do aluminium windows cost?

Aluminium windows start from £400. Size, opening type, glass, colour and the number of windows all affect the total, and a full house works out differently from a single replacement. Our free survey produces a written quote, and our double glazing cost guide explains the main factors in more detail.
