We provide double glazing in Biggleswade and the surrounding Ivel valley villages, making aluminium windows and doors in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and fitting them with our own installers. Alongside aluminium, we offer UPVC windows and doors on the Selecta Advance 70 system and composite front doors. Aluminium windows start from £400, lead times from 10 days, and every installation comes with a 10-year guarantee. We are some distance away, so we plan each Biggleswade job carefully around the journey.

A growing market town on the River Ivel
Biggleswade is an old market town on the River Ivel, given its market charter by King John. A great fire on 16 June 1785 destroyed almost a third of it, so much of the historic centre was rebuilt in the Georgian period and later. The Great North Road ran through the middle until the A1 bypass opened in 1961, and the railway arrived in 1850. Today the town is growing quickly: the population rose about 36 per cent between 2011 and 2021, with new homes at Kings Reach and further land east of the town approved for development.
That leaves a wide spread of housing. The centre has Georgian and Victorian brick buildings and terraces, the wards of Ivel, Holme and Stratton contain twentieth-century semis and estates, and the newest homes are only a few years old.
Planning in Biggleswade
Central Bedfordshire Council has been the unitary authority since 2009 and handles planning. The town centre is a designated conservation area. If you live within it, or in a listed building, check with Central Bedfordshire Council before ordering new windows or doors. Owners of new-build homes should also check the title and any estate covenants, which sometimes control external changes. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows sets out the general position.
Floodplain and the Ivel
The Environment Agency monitors the Ivel at Biggleswade and issues flood warnings for the river here and at Langford. If your home is close to the river or Biggleswade Common, it is worth checking your flood risk before investing in ground-floor doors or an extension. We can talk through threshold options at survey.
Noise is the other local factor. Homes close to the A1 or the East Coast Main Line, which carries trains to London in about 45 minutes, can pick up traffic and rail noise. Well-sealed modern frames make a clear difference, and we can discuss glass choices aimed at reducing noise. If you own a flat, note that flats have no householder permitted development rights, so check planning and get the freeholder’s consent first.
Which windows and doors fit which homes
Older town centre properties. Proportions matter here. Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casements have slim frames that suit brick openings, and UPVC can give a more traditional look. We do not make timber windows, so woodgrain-finish UPVC is our timber-look option.
Post-war semis and estates. A full set of UPVC windows and doors is usually the best-value upgrade, while Cortizo and Alunet aluminium are popular for a sharper modern finish. See our aluminium windows and doors range.
Newer homes. Many new-build owners want to replace a standard patio door. Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors are the usual choices.
Extra rooms and entrances. We build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns, and fit composite doors.

Planning the journey from Fifield
Biggleswade is roughly 55 to 60 miles from our workshop by road, typically around an hour and a quarter via the M25 and A1(M), depending on traffic. Because of that distance, we arrange surveys and installation days in advance and try to group visits in the area. The process is simple: a free survey and written quote, manufacture in Fifield, then fitting by our own team, who remove and take away the old frames. Our double glazing cost guide helps you plan a budget before we visit.

Frequently asked questions
Do you really cover Biggleswade from Windsor?
Yes. Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 55 to 60 miles by road and usually around an hour and a quarter away. We have no local office, so we schedule surveys and installations in advance and often group visits in the Biggleswade area. Our own team does the survey and the fitting.
Who handles planning for windows in Biggleswade?
Central Bedfordshire Council is the planning authority. The town centre is a conservation area, and listed buildings need consent for most changes. For an ordinary house outside those areas, like-for-like window replacement usually does not need planning permission. Check with Central Bedfordshire Council if you are unsure, and check new-build covenants too.
Can I replace the patio door on my new-build house in Biggleswade?
Usually yes, though check your title for covenants and any warranty conditions first. A wider opening may need building regulations approval and a new lintel. We supply Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, and we will measure the opening and advise at a free survey.
My house is near the River Ivel. Does that affect new doors?
It can. The Environment Agency issues flood warnings for the Ivel at Biggleswade, so check your property's flood risk before investing in ground-floor doors or an extension. Low thresholds are popular but may not suit every location. We will look at the site and talk through options during the survey.
How long is the wait for windows in Biggleswade?
Lead times start from 10 days once the order is confirmed, because we make aluminium frames ourselves. We then book an installation date that works around the journey, and most homes are completed in one or two days. Everything we fit is covered by a 10-year guarantee.
