Why Buckingham’s centre looks Georgian
On 15 March 1725 a fire swept through Buckingham and destroyed 138 of the town’s 387 homes. The rebuilding gave the market-place centre much of its eighteenth-century character, set around older survivors such as Castle House on West Street, a Grade I listed building dating from the fifteenth century. The late eighteenth-century Town Hall is Grade II* listed, and the Old Gaol, now the town museum, sits at the heart of the centre.
The modern town is largely a product of the 1970s and after. In 1971 the county council set up the Buckingham Development Company to expand the town and build a bypass, and the population grew from just over 5,000 to more than 9,000 by 1991. Neighbourhoods such as Castle Fields, Linden Village, Page Hill, Badgers, Bourton, Mount Pleasant and the Tingewick Road estate followed, with Lace Hill among the newer additions.
In practice that means three broad kinds of Buckingham job. Owners in the eighteenth-century streets usually want to know what the council will allow before talking about style. Owners of houses built during the expansion years are mostly replacing worn double glazing, sometimes for the second time, and want lower maintenance and better-sealing frames. Owners on the newest estates tend to be looking at the garden side of the house, with wider doors or a room that brings in more light.
The conservation area was updated in 2026
Buckinghamshire Council is the planning authority, having replaced Aylesbury Vale District Council in 2020. In April 2026 it adopted a new appraisal and management plan for the Buckingham Conservation Area, expanding the boundary in four locations and dividing the area into four character zones. If you assessed your home against the old boundary, look again: a property that was outside may now be inside. Check with Buckinghamshire Council before replacing windows on a listed building, in the conservation area, or in a flat, where there are no householder permitted development rights. Our planning permission guide covers the general position.

Period properties near the Market Square
We do not make timber windows or doors. Where a slender profile matters, we suggest the Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening aluminium casement with narrow frames, or a woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium option. Whether either is acceptable on a particular building is a question for the council, and we will tell you so at the survey.
1970s to 1990s estates
Homes built during the town’s expansion are now on their second or even third set of windows. UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system offer good value, while Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows suit owners who want slimmer frames and a modern colour. A composite door refreshes the front of the house.
Garden rooms and doors
For the back of the house we fit Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, and we build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns.
Villages around Buckingham
Our Buckingham visits cover Maids Moreton, which now joins the town on its north-eastern edge, plus Padbury and Gawcott to the south, Chackmore towards Stowe and Shalstone to the north-west. See also our pages for double glazing in Milton Keynes, Brackley and Aylesbury, and our Buckinghamshire hub.
From first call to finished fit
We begin with a free home survey, measuring each opening and talking through glass, colour and handles. You then get a written quote: aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our double glazing cost guide explains what moves the price. Aluminium frames are made in Fifield with lead times from 10 days, and our own fitters make the journey to install, seal and tidy up. Everything is covered by a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Has the Buckingham conservation area boundary changed?
Yes. In April 2026 Buckinghamshire Council adopted an updated appraisal and management plan that expanded the Buckingham Conservation Area in four locations and split it into four character zones. If you are unsure whether your home is now inside the boundary, check with Buckinghamshire Council before planning visible changes to windows or doors.
Do you fit timber sash windows in Buckingham?
No, we do not make timber windows or doors. For older homes we offer slim aluminium casements such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68, and woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium. On listed buildings or in the conservation area, the council decides what is acceptable, so check with Buckinghamshire Council first.
Is Buckingham too far for you to cover?
No. Buckingham is roughly 50 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, around an hour and ten minutes' drive. Our own surveyors and fitters travel up for each appointment, and we agree dates with you in advance so the journey never holds up the work on the day.
What would suit a 1980s house in Buckingham?
Houses from the town's expansion years often suit UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system for value, or Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows for slimmer frames. Pair them with a composite front door and, at the back, bifold or sliding doors if you want better access to the garden.
How soon could my windows be fitted?
After the survey and your approval of the quote, our aluminium windows are made in Fifield with lead times from 10 days. We then confirm a fitting date that suits you. Smaller jobs are usually completed in a day, while full houses or extensions are planned across consecutive days.
