A town shaped by silk, iron and steady growth

Braintree’s housing tells the story of its industries. The Courtauld family’s silk business brought money and work to the town in the nineteenth century, and the family paid for the town hall and the public gardens. Crittall began here too, at an ironmongery on Bank Street, before becoming the famous name in metal windows. Around the old centre you will find Victorian and Edwardian red-brick terraces, many still with sash openings or replacement windows from the 1970s and 1980s.

Bocking, historically a separate parish north of the old Roman road, was joined to Braintree in 1934, and by then the town had already spread well beyond its parish boundaries. Later decades added inter-war semis, post-war council housing and private estates such as Mark’s Farm. Great Notley, on the south-western edge, is a much newer settlement, and many of its homes now have first-generation double glazing that is reaching the end of its life.

Conservation areas and who to ask

Braintree District Council handles planning for the town and publishes appraisals for the Braintree Town Centre and Bradford Street conservation areas. Bradford Street, running down towards Bocking, is lined with older timber-framed and brick houses where the look of windows and doors matters a great deal. If your home is listed, or sits in either conservation area, please check with Braintree District Council before you commit to new frames. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows explains the general position.

It is also worth knowing that the government has confirmed plans to replace the councils of Greater Essex with five new unitary authorities, expected from April 2028 subject to parliamentary approval. Until then, Braintree District Council remains the planning authority.

Matching products to Braintree homes

We do not make timber windows. If you want a timber look, woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium, or a composite door, are the alternatives we offer.

How a Braintree survey and installation works

We do not have a showroom in Essex. Our only base is the Fifield workshop, roughly 80 miles from Braintree by road, which is usually around an hour and three-quarters via the M25 and A12 depending on traffic. Because of that distance, we plan surveys and installations in advance and group the work around the journey, so the fitting team arrives early and stays until the job is complete.

  1. A surveyor visits to measure every opening and talk through styles, colours and glass.
  2. You receive a written quote. Our double glazing cost guide gives a sense of budgets beforehand.
  3. Aluminium frames are made in our own workshop, so we control quality and timing.
  4. Our own fitters remove the old frames, install the new ones and make good inside and out.

Signs your Braintree windows are due for replacement

Many homes in Bocking and on the estates around the town had their first double glazing fitted decades ago. Common warning signs are condensation trapped between the panes, draughts around the sashes, handles that no longer lock firmly and frames that have yellowed or warped. When the survey shows that tired fascias, soffits or guttering need attention as well, we can quote for those in the same visit.

Villages and neighbourhoods we cover

Alongside the town itself we fit in Bocking, Great Notley, Black Notley, White Notley, Rayne, Panfield, Stisted and Cressing. We also cover nearby towns, including Witham, Chelmsford and Haverhill.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a showroom near Braintree?

No. Our only premises are our workshop at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, which is roughly 80 miles from Braintree by road. A surveyor comes to your home with samples and brochures, and we plan the survey and installation dates in advance so the journey does not delay your project.

Do I need permission to replace windows on Bradford Street?

Bradford Street is a conservation area and many houses there are listed. Listed buildings need listed building consent for new windows, and conservation area homes may face extra controls. Please check with Braintree District Council before ordering. We can provide drawings and product details to support any application you need to make.

Which windows suit a Victorian terrace in central Braintree?

One option is an aluminium casement such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68, which has slim frames and a crisp profile that suits older brick openings. Others prefer woodgrain-finish UPVC for a softer, traditional look at a lower cost. Our surveyor will show both options and explain the differences in appearance, performance and price.

How much does double glazing cost in Braintree?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window, with the final price depending on size, style, glass and colour. UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system are often lower. Your free survey produces a fixed written quote for your Braintree home, with no pressure and no obligation to go ahead.

How long will I wait for new windows in Great Notley?

Our lead time starts from around 10 days after survey, though bespoke colours or large door sets can take longer. Because Great Notley is a fair distance from our Fifield workshop, we book the installation date with you in advance and plan the day so the team can finish the job efficiently.
