Built from Bath stone
Corsham sits at the south-western edge of the Cotswolds and is still a centre of Bath stone quarrying, with underground extraction continuing at Hartham Park and Monk’s Park. That stone runs through the town. The High Street has more than 60 listed buildings, among them the Grade II* row at Nos. 94 to 112 known as the Flemish Weavers’ Houses. The Grove and The Ivy are typical Georgian houses. Lady Margaret Hungerford’s almshouses date from the mid-17th century, and Corsham Court, built on an Elizabethan manor house of 1582, has been the Methuen family home since 1745.
The Corsham conservation area, designated in 1970, is unusually large at about 269 hectares and includes more than 200 listed buildings. That means a good share of Corsham’s homes, not just those on the High Street, need a planning conversation before any window change. Check with Wiltshire Council, the planning authority, first. Separate conservation areas cover Pickwick, Gastard, Neston, Box and Lacock.
Beyond the old town
Not all of Corsham is historic stone. The Ministry of Defence grew here during the Second World War and the Cold War, and the former Copenacre site has been redeveloped as housing since 2016. Westwells is now inside the built-up area, and Pickwick, once a separate settlement, forms the north-western part of town. Many of these later homes are ordinary replacement jobs without heritage restrictions.
The villages around Corsham each have their own character. Pickwick is said to have inspired the name of Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers. Neston grew up around the Neston Park estate, whose house dates from about 1790. Gastard has the Grade I listed Monk’s Chapel of 1662, and the eastern portal of Box Tunnel is at Hudswell on the western edge of town.
Our suggestions for Corsham homes
Stone houses where replacement is allowed. The Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement is at the heart of our aluminium window range, with Cortizo and Alunet as alternatives. Slim frames suit stone mullions and deep reveals. Windows start from Β£400.
Listed buildings. Replacing historic windows needs listed building consent, which is often refused. In that case, secondary glazing can improve comfort while keeping the original windows.
Newer houses. UPVC windows and doors in Selecta Advance 70, and composite front doors. We do not make timber windows or doors, but woodgrain finishes are available.
Gardens and extensions. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors, and conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns.
Before you decide, read our planning permission guide. It explains why conservation areas and listed buildings are treated differently.

Our credentials, briefly
Inspired Glazing is a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and holds Constructionline Silver. We fabricate aluminium windows and doors in our own Fifield workshop. That helps in a town like Corsham, where openings cut in Bath stone are rarely standard sizes and are often slightly out of square. Each frame is made to the survey measurements and fitted by the same team that measured it.
If road or other outside noise is a concern, tell us at survey so we can talk through glass choices. We would rather explain what is realistic than promise a figure we cannot back up.

Frequently asked questions
Is most of Corsham a conservation area?
A large part is. The Corsham conservation area, designated in 1970, covers about 269 hectares and contains more than 200 listed buildings. Pickwick, Gastard, Neston, Box and Lacock have their own conservation areas. Check your address with Wiltshire Council before replacing windows, especially on stone houses in and around the High Street.
Can I replace windows in a listed Bath stone house?
Only with listed building consent from Wiltshire Council, and consent to replace historic windows is often refused. Where it is, secondary glazing fitted inside the existing frames can improve warmth and reduce noise without changing the outside. We can measure for secondary glazing and supply details to support any consent application you make.
Do you cover the newer homes at Copenacre and Westwells?
Yes. Newer houses at the former Copenacre site and around Westwells are usually straightforward replacements without heritage restrictions. Check any estate covenants first. We often suggest UPVC or aluminium windows, a composite front door and, for the garden, a sliding or bifold door. A free survey confirms what suits.
How far is Corsham from your workshop?
Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 80 miles from Corsham, or around an hour and a half by road. We have no office in Wiltshire. Because of the distance, we plan surveys and fitting days well in advance and try to complete each installation over consecutive days.
What lead time should I expect?
Aluminium windows and doors are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days after the order. In Corsham, many homes need planning or listed building consent, and that must come first. Once permission and the order are in place, we book installation dates that suit you and plan the journey around them.
