Double Glazing in Melksham: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Double glazing in Melksham is something we handle from our workshop in Fifield, near Windsor. Inspired Glazing makes its aluminium windows and doors there, also supplies UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories, and fits everything with its own team. Melksham is roughly 80 miles from Fifield, around an hour and a half by road. We have no local branch, so surveys and installations are scheduled ahead and fitted over consecutive days.

Melksham’s buildings, old and new

The historic heart of Melksham is around the church and Canon Square. Grade II houses and cottages there include a late 17th-century former vicarage, and a 15th-century tithe barn near the church has been converted to homes. The wool trade left a late 18th-century roundhouse. In 1815 the Melksham Spa Company built a crescent of six large three-storey semi-detached lodging houses at what is now The Spa.

Melksham has also kept growing. Bowerhill, a large residential community partly on the former RAF Melksham site, is usually treated as separate from the town, and Hunter’s Meadow north of it dates from the 2020s. Berryfield to the south and Beanacre to the north are often counted as part of Melksham. The town-centre Avon Tyre site, closed at the end of 2023, is another place where change is likely. Between them, these areas give Melksham a wide range of house ages. Even the grand houses have changed over time: Melksham House is early 18th century but was largely rebuilt after a fire in 1920. Industry has moved too, with Avon Rubber relocating in 2000 to a purpose-built site near Semington.

Living near the Avon

The Bristol Avon runs through the middle of town. In November 2024 Storm Bert pushed it over its banks, flooding homes and businesses at Bath Road, Avonside and Broughton Road. A local historian called it the worst flooding since 11 July 1968. If your home is near the river, tell us at survey. It shapes how we plan door thresholds and the details around ground-floor frames.

Good fits for Melksham homes

Stone cottages and period houses

Our aluminium windows centre on the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, with Cortizo and Alunet alternatives, from £400 a window. In the Melksham conservation area, or for a listed building, check with Wiltshire Council first. Secondary glazing can help where replacement is not allowed.

Bowerhill, Berryfield and newer estates

UPVC windows and doors in Selecta Advance 70 are a sensible upgrade. Pair them with a composite front door, which gives a timber look. We do not make timber doors.

Garden rooms and openings

We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds, and build conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns.

Planning in and around Melksham

Wiltshire Council handles planning, while Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council have a consultative role. The national register lists a Melksham conservation area, and nearby Seend, Atworth, Broughton Gifford and Holt have their own. Flats have no householder permitted development rights. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows explains when consent is likely.

The process

We start with a free survey and follow it with a written quote. Our cost guide explains the numbers. We make the frames at Fifield, with aluminium lead times from 10 days, then our team fits them on agreed dates. Every installation comes with a 10-year guarantee.

Our Melksham coverage includes Bowerhill, Berryfield, Beanacre, Shaw, Whitley, Semington and Seend. Neighbouring pages: Trowbridge, Devizes and Corsham.

A note on the Spa and Canon Square

The 1815 lodging houses at The Spa and the cottages around Canon Square are the kind of buildings where a planning check is essential. They are a crescent of three-storey houses, or groups of listed houses, where one owner’s new window is seen alongside the neighbours’. Ask Wiltshire Council what is allowed before you commit. If the answer is that originals must stay, secondary glazing is an option we fit.

We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver. Because we make our own aluminium frames in Fifield rather than buying them in, we can build to the sizes your Melksham home actually has, not the nearest standard size.

Frequently asked questions

My Melksham house flooded in 2024. Can new doors help?

We cannot make a home flood-proof, and windows and doors alone will not stop river water. What we can do is plan ground-floor door thresholds and frame details with your flood history in mind, and avoid choices that make low openings more vulnerable. Tell us about any past flooding at survey. Separate flood-resistance products are a specialist area.

Do you cover Bowerhill and Berryfield?

Yes. We cover Bowerhill, Berryfield and Beanacre as well as Shaw, Whitley, Semington and Seend. The journey from Fifield is the same around an hour and a half, so we plan visits ahead. Newer homes in Bowerhill are often straightforward replacements, while older properties in the villages may need a planning check first.

Is there a conservation area in Melksham?

Yes. The national conservation area register lists a Melksham conservation area, and the town has listed buildings around the church and Canon Square. Seend, Atworth, Broughton Gifford and Holt nearby have their own. Ask Wiltshire Council whether your address is included, and whether the building is listed, before ordering replacement windows.

What do aluminium windows cost in Melksham?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 each. The final price depends on size, opening type, colour and glass. The quickest way to an accurate figure is a free survey, after which we send a written quote. Our double glazing cost guide also explains what tends to push prices up or down.

Do you make timber-look windows for older Melksham cottages?

We do not make timber windows or doors. For a traditional look, we offer woodgrain-finish UPVC and aluminium windows and composite doors with timber-effect finishes. On a listed cottage, the council may insist on timber, in which case secondary glazing inside the existing windows is an alternative we can fit.
