From the Darent valley to the riverside
Dartford grew where the old London to Dover road crossed the River Darent, and the town centre still sits in that valley. Around it, the housing covers most of the last two centuries: older terraces and villas close to the centre, the Temple Hill estate built in 1947, and a wave of newer flats on former industrial land such as Langley Square, built on the old GlaxoSmithKline works on Mill Pond Road. Former hospital buildings have been converted too, including the Livingstone Hospital on East Hill, which is now flats.
Because so many newer Dartford homes are flats, it is worth repeating that flats have no householder permitted development rights. Before replacing windows in a flat, you will normally need the freeholder’s or management company’s consent and should check whether planning permission is needed.
Much of the town centre has changed in recent years, with regeneration around Market Street and Brewery Square and older industrial sites turned into homes. Next to the centre, Central Park runs beside the River Darent. Away from the middle, Wilmington is contiguous with the town to the south, while Crayford, in the London Borough of Bexley, borders it to the west. Each of these areas has its own mix of terraces, semis and detached houses, so our surveyor looks at the house in front of them rather than assuming a standard Dartford window. Older homes may have bay windows or unusual sizes, which we can make to measure in our workshop.
Conservation areas and Dartford Borough Council
Dartford Borough Council handles planning. Its conservation areas include Dartford Town Centre, Greenhithe, Church Hill in Wilmington, Southfleet, Hook Green and Red Street. The council asks for work in these areas to be sympathetic to their character, so if your home is in one, or is listed, check with Dartford Borough Council before ordering. Our planning permission guide covers the basics. We do not make timber windows.
Glazing for Dartford’s main house types
Older terraces near the centre. Woodgrain-finish UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system give a traditional appearance with little upkeep.
Post-war estates such as Temple Hill. A straight replacement with UPVC, or an upgrade to aluminium windows like Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening casement, and the Cortizo and Alunet ranges.
Family homes in Wilmington and Stone. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors for extensions and gardens, plus conservatories and roof lanterns.
Every type of home. Composite front doors, and fascias, soffits and guttering if the roofline is due an update at the same time.
Traffic and the Dartford Crossing
The A282 and the Dartford Crossing carry the M25 over and under the Thames just east of the town, and the A206 runs along its northern edge. If your home is near these roads, modern well-sealed frames will usually make it quieter as well as warmer. Ask our surveyor about glass options for the noisiest side of the house.

Frequently asked questions
Which conservation areas are there in Dartford?
Dartford Borough Council lists conservation areas at Dartford Town Centre, Greenhithe, Church Hill in Wilmington, Southfleet, Hook Green and Red Street. Extra care is expected for changes in these areas, and listed buildings need consent for most window work. Check with Dartford Borough Council before ordering if your home is in one.
Can you replace windows in a Dartford riverside apartment?
Yes, once the freeholder or management company has agreed. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, and many newer Dartford developments have rules on window style and colour. Check whether planning permission is also needed. After approval, we survey, make the frames in our Fifield workshop and fit them with our own team.
How long does it take you to reach Dartford?
Dartford is roughly 58 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, usually about an hour and a quarter via the M25, depending on traffic. Because of the distance, we plan surveys and installation days in advance. Our own surveyor and fitters make every trip; we have no Kent office or showroom.
What is a good window choice for a Temple Hill house?
Post-war houses like those on the Temple Hill estate usually suit simple casement windows. UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system is the economical choice, while aluminium such as Reynaers SlimLine 68 offers slimmer frames and more colour options. Our surveyor will recommend a layout that suits your house and budget.
Do you fit bifold doors in Dartford?
Yes. We fit Smart Visofold and Cortizo aluminium bifold doors, and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors if you prefer large sliding panels. Both are popular for rear extensions in Wilmington, Stone and Dartford itself. We survey, fabricate and install with our own team, and each installation carries a 10-year guarantee.
