Enfield’s homes, from the railway age onwards

The London Borough of Enfield was formed in 1965 from the old boroughs of Enfield, Edmonton and Southgate. Its population climbed from about 42,750 in 1881 to almost 155,000 by 1911 as rail links reached the area, and the direct line to Enfield Town opened in 1872. That growth left a borough of very different streets.

Bush Hill Park is a planned suburban estate: the first houses went up between 1880 and 1886 after the station opened, most of the early ones designed by R. Tayler Smith for the North London Estates Company. Palmers Green developed rapidly from 1902, when local landowners finally sold large tracts for building, with the Old Park and Hazelwood Park estates among the first. Further west, Southgate, Oakwood and Cockfosters sit along the Piccadilly line, while Edmonton and Ponders End in the east have more terraces and post-war housing, including the municipal housing around Edmonton Green.

Conservation areas and Article 4 in Enfield

Enfield Council looks after 22 conservation areas. They include Enfield Town, Bush Hill Park, Winchmore Hill, Southgate Green, Forty Hill, Clay Hill, Enfield Lock, Grange Park, Hadley Wood, Trent Park, Church Street, Fore Street Edmonton, the Lakes Estate and Highlands. Several are also covered by Article 4 directions, among them Enfield Town, Enfield Lock, Bush Hill Park, Winchmore Hill, Grange Park, Hadley Wood, Meadway, The Crescent and Abbotshall Avenue. Where a direction applies, the council says a planning application is needed before works it covers can go ahead.

So if your house is in one of those areas, or is listed, check with Enfield Council before you choose frames. A flat has no householder permitted development rights at all, and leaseholders usually need the freeholder’s consent too. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows sets out the general rules.

Matching products to Enfield houses

We do not make timber windows or doors. If you want the look of wood, a woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium frame, or a composite door, is the alternative.

Where we work in and around Enfield

We cover Enfield Town, Edmonton, Southgate, Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill, Bush Hill Park, Ponders End, Enfield Lock and Cockfosters. On the eastern side, towards Enfield Lock and Brimsdown, the borough meets the Lee Valley Park, which takes in Myddleton House and its gardens near Forty Hill. Neighbouring pages cover Barnet, Haringey and Cheshunt just over the Hertfordshire border.

From first call to fitted windows

We start with a home survey: one of the team comes out from Fifield, measures every opening and brings frame colour and hardware samples, as we have no showroom outside Fifield. You then get a written quote. Aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide explains what moves a whole-house figure. Lead times start from 10 days once the order is confirmed, and the aluminium frames are made in our own workshop. On fitting day our installers remove the old frames, fit and seal the new ones and clear up. Every installation carries a 10-year guarantee.

We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for new windows in Enfield?

For most houses outside conservation areas, like-for-like replacement windows fall under permitted development. Enfield has 22 conservation areas, and many are covered by Article 4 directions that require a planning application for some works. Flats have no householder permitted development rights. Check with Enfield Council before ordering if any of this applies.

How far does your team travel to reach Enfield?

We are based at Fifield, near Windsor, and that is our only premises. Enfield is roughly 38 miles away by road, mostly on the M25, which usually means around an hour's drive. The same team handles the survey and the installation, and we book visits around the journey.

What suits a Victorian house in Bush Hill Park?

Bush Hill Park is a conservation area with Article 4 controls, so check with Enfield Council first. For the windows themselves, slim aluminium frames such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 casement give narrow sightlines. We can bring colour and hardware samples to your survey so you can compare options against the house.

How much do aluminium windows cost in Enfield?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window. The final figure depends on size, opening style, colour, glass and the number of windows, so we give a written quote after a free survey. Our double glazing cost guide explains the main things that affect a whole-house price.

Can you replace the windows in my Palmers Green flat?

Yes, but flats have no householder permitted development rights, so the change may need planning permission from Enfield Council. If you are a leaseholder you will usually need the freeholder's consent as well. Once you have the approvals, we survey, make and fit the windows in the same way as for a house.
