Looking for double glazing in Hackney? Inspired Glazing makes and installs aluminium windows and doors, UPVC windows, composite front doors, secondary glazing and garden rooms for Hackney homes, from Stoke Newington terraces to flats in Dalston and Homerton. Aluminium frames are fabricated in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and fitted by our own installers. We do not have a Hackney office: the borough is around 32 miles from Fifield by road, which usually means an hour to an hour and a half through west and central London, and our team makes that trip for every survey and fit.

Georgian, Victorian and post-war Hackney
Hackney’s housing tells the story of a borough that grew fast in the nineteenth century and was rebuilt in places after the Blitz. Many Georgian and Victorian terraces survive, with Georgian and Edwardian houses still standing in South Hackney. Stoke Newington grew from a village on the old Cambridge road into a late Victorian suburb of large houses for commuters, and Church Street there still keeps its village feel. Elsewhere, interwar council estates such as Kingsmead and post-war blocks sit alongside converted warehouses and new flats, particularly around Dalston and Hackney Wick.
That mix means a Hackney survey can involve almost anything: a sash-windowed townhouse, a split-level conversion, a top-floor flat or a new rear extension. Only around a third of households own their home, so for many residents the first question is not what to fit but who has to agree to it.
Conservation areas and Article 4 in Hackney
Hackney Council has 35 conservation areas. The three newest, designated in 2021, are Beck Road, Pitfield Street and Well Street. Others include Clapton Square and De Beauvoir, where the 1830s “new town” houses are in a picturesque Tudor-Jacobean style, some with lozenge-patterned leaded lights.
De Beauvoir also shows how far control can go. Its Article 4 direction, approved in 2008, brings alterations to windows, front doors, doorcases, railings, porches and roofs under planning control for the properties it covers, along with exterior painting. Not every house in the area is included, and Hackney keeps an Article 4 property database so you can check an individual address. Wherever you are in the borough, check with Hackney Council before changing the front of a house in a conservation area. We are happy to provide drawings and specifications to go with an application.
Flats, leases and freeholder consent
Between its estates, converted houses, warehouse conversions and new blocks, Hackney has a great many flats. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so new windows on a flat can need planning permission even outside a conservation area. Leaseholders normally need written consent from the freeholder or managing agent as well, and some leases set out the frame colour or style. Sort out both before booking a fit and the project runs far more smoothly.
Products for Hackney homes
- Period terraces with original sashes: we do not make timber sash windows. Where the originals have to stay, our secondary glazing fitted inside the existing frames improves warmth and cuts traffic noise without changing the street view.
- Rear extensions and kitchen-diners: Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds and roof lanterns suit the narrow, deep plots behind Victorian terraces, and a compact conservatory or orangery can work where the garden allows.
- Modern conversions and warehouse flats: slim aluminium windows, including the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, give a clean industrial look in black, grey or any RAL colour.
- Ex-council houses and later homes: UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system and composite doors for a cost-effective upgrade.
Where you want the look of wood, woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium, or a composite door, is the route we offer.
Where we work in the borough

Survey, quote and fitting
Our surveyor travels from Fifield, measures each window and door, checks access and parking on your street, and talks through glass, colours and hardware. You then receive a written quote. Aluminium windows start from £400, lead times start from 10 days, and every job carries our 10-year guarantee. Our double glazing cost guide explains what affects the price, and our page on planning permission for replacement windows covers the consent questions in more depth.
On fitting day the same team that works from our workshop removes the old frames, installs the new ones and makes good inside and out.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need permission to replace windows in De Beauvoir?
For many houses, yes. The De Beauvoir Article 4 direction, approved in 2008, brings alterations to windows, front doors, doorcases and other features under planning control for the properties it covers. Not every address is included, so use Hackney Council's Article 4 property database or ask the council before ordering anything for the front of the house.
Can I put double glazing in a leasehold flat in Hackney?
Usually, but not without the right consents. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so planning permission may be needed, and your lease will normally require written consent from the freeholder or managing agent. Some leases specify frame colour or style. Get those answers first, then book a survey and we will quote to match.
Do you make timber sash windows for Victorian houses in Stoke Newington?
No. We do not make timber windows. If original sashes must be kept, we can fit secondary glazing inside them, which improves comfort without altering the outside. Where replacement is allowed, woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium is our timber-look option, but check with Hackney Council first in a conservation area.
What doors suit a rear extension on a Hackney terrace?
Narrow, deep terrace plots often suit a Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding door, which keeps the opening clear without panels folding into the garden. Bifolds from Smart Visofold or Cortizo open the full width instead. Both are aluminium and made to measure. A roof lantern can bring extra light into a long kitchen-diner.
Where is your team based, and how long does it take to reach Hackney?
Our workshop and fitters are at Fifield, near Windsor. Hackney is around 32 miles away by road, usually an hour to an hour and a half depending on London traffic. We have no office in east London, so we book survey and installation dates with you in advance.
