Double Glazing in Hove: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing fits double glazing in Hove, from aluminium windows and sliding doors made in our own workshop to UPVC windows, composite front doors and conservatories. We are based at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 70 miles from Hove by road, typically around an hour and a half via the M25 and M23. There is no Hove office: surveys and installations are planned in advance around the journey, and our own team travels from Fifield.

Know your street before you choose

In Hove the first question is often not which window, but which street. Brighton and Hove City Council looks after 34 conservation areas, and eleven of them are in Hove and Portslade: Brunswick Town, Cliftonville, Denmark Villas, Hove Station, Old Hove, Pembroke and Princes, Portslade Old Village, Sackville Gardens, The Avenues, The Drive and the Willett Estate. Several of these are covered by heritage Article 4 directions, including Brunswick; The Avenues; Pembroke and Princes; Adelaide Crescent, Palmeira Square and Western Road; Lansdowne Square and Lansdowne Place; and Cliftonville, Denmark Villas and The Drive. Under those directions, replacement windows and doors can need planning permission even on a house.

That is why we will always ask you to check with Brighton and Hove City Council before ordering if you live in one of these areas. Some Regency and listed buildings will require timber sashes, which we do not make, and we would rather tell you that at the start than waste your survey.

Houses, villas and a lot of flats

Hove’s seafront is defined by the cream stucco terraces, crescents and squares of Brunswick Town and Adelaide Crescent. Behind them, the later Victorian town spreads north in grids of red-brick villas and terraces around The Avenues, The Drive and the Willett Estate, many of them long since divided into flats. Further out, Aldrington and the streets around Hove Park have interwar and Edwardian houses, while Hangleton and West Blatchington are largely interwar and post-war suburbs.

Flats deserve their own mention because there are so many here. A flat has no householder permitted development rights, so new windows may need planning permission, and the lease almost always requires the freeholder’s or management company’s consent. Sorting that out first saves time.

Hove was a separate borough until it joined Brighton in the unitary authority created in 1997, and the two became a single city in 2000, so planning for every Hove address now sits with Brighton and Hove City Council. Converted villas often have a mix of window styles from different decades, flat by flat. Where several leaseholders in one building want to replace windows at once, agreeing a single style and colour with the freeholder at the outset usually makes consent easier and gives a more consistent elevation.

What we would suggest

On the seafront, salt air is a factor. We specify powder-coated aluminium and suitable hardware for exposed elevations, and advise rinsing frames a few times a year.

Our patch around Hove

We cover central Hove, Aldrington, Goldsmid, Hangleton, West Blatchington and Portslade. We also have pages for Brighton, Shoreham-by-Sea and Burgess Hill, and a wider Sussex page. For the general rules on consent, see our planning permission guide for replacement windows.

Survey, make, fit

We book a free survey on a day we are working in Brighton and Hove, measure every opening and discuss glass, colour, hardware and any consent you need. You then get a written quote; aluminium windows start from £400, and the double glazing cost guide explains what drives the price. Aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days, then our own fitters travel down, remove the old frames, install and seal the new ones and leave everything tidy. Parking and access in central Hove can be tight, so we agree arrangements before fitting day. Every job carries a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for new windows in The Avenues, Hove?

Quite possibly. The Avenues is a conservation area covered by a heritage Article 4 direction, which can bring replacement windows and doors under planning control. Many houses there are also flats, which have no householder permitted development rights. Check with Brighton and Hove City Council before ordering, and we can supply drawings for an application.

Can you replace sash windows in Brunswick Town?

Brunswick Town is a conservation area with a comprehensive Article 4 direction, and many buildings are listed, so the council will often expect like-for-like timber sashes. We do not make timber windows. Check with Brighton and Hove City Council first; if aluminium or UPVC is not acceptable, we will tell you honestly.

How do I get new windows in a Hove flat?

Start with your lease and the freeholder or managing agent, who normally have to consent in writing. Because flats have no householder permitted development rights, check with Brighton and Hove City Council whether planning permission is required. Once both are clear, we survey, make the frames in Fifield and fit them with our own team.

Do you have an office in Brighton or Hove?

No. Our only premises are at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 70 miles from Hove by road, around an hour and a half. We bring samples to the survey, plan fitting days in advance around the journey, and agree parking and access beforehand, which matters on busy central Hove streets.

Which windows suit a 1930s house in Hangleton?

For an interwar semi, UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are usually the most cost-effective choice, with woodgrain finishes if you want a warmer look. If you prefer slimmer frames or stronger colours, our Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casements work well too. We will price both at the free survey if you are undecided.
