Looking at double glazing in Shoreham-by-Sea? Inspired Glazing makes aluminium windows and doors in its own workshop and fits them with its own installers, and also supplies UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. We should be clear about geography: our only base is at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 75 miles from Shoreham by road, a drive of around an hour and three quarters via the M25, M23 and A27. Surveys and installations here are planned in advance around that journey, and the team travels down from Fifield.

Glazing for a harbour town
Shoreham lives with the sea and the River Adur on two sides. Homes on Shoreham Beach, the shingle spit between the river and the Channel, take the full force of south-westerly wind and salt spray, and even houses back in the old town see more salt in the air than an inland street. That changes what we look for at survey. We specify powder-coated aluminium and good-quality hardware, check that drainage slots in the frames are clear and correctly placed, and talk honestly about the cleaning that any window near the sea needs to keep its finish and seals in good order.
Wind loading matters too. Large glazed doors facing the beach need properly sized sections and secure fixings, which is one reason we survey every opening in person rather than quoting from photos.
From flint cottages to Bungalow Town
The housing here is unusually varied for a town of around 20,000 people. The old town around the High Street and the medieval St Mary de Haura church has flint and brick cottages and Victorian terraces. Old Shoreham, to the north by the Norman church of St Nicolas, is older still. Shoreham Beach has a stranger story: in the early 1900s converted railway carriages served as summer homes and the area was known as Bungalow Town, the base of an early British film studio. Much of it was cleared for defence in the Second World War, and most of what stands there today is post-war housing, much of it rebuilt in recent decades with large windows facing the sea. Inland, the town has interwar and post-war semis and estates stretching towards the A27.
Our suggestions by house type
- Beach houses and contemporary rebuilds: Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors give large panels of glass for sea views, and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds suit sheltered terraces.
- Victorian terraces and cottages: our Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement keeps frames slim on small openings. Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows are also available.
- Interwar and post-war semis: UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are the value option.
- Front doors: a composite door copes well with exposure and needs little upkeep. We do not make timber doors or windows.
For extra living space, we also build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns.
Planning with Adur District Council
Shoreham is in Adur, whose planning service is run jointly with Worthing as Adur and Worthing Councils. Adur has seven conservation areas, and four of them are in or next to Shoreham: Shoreham-by-Sea (the old town centre), Old Shoreham, Kingston Buci and Southwick. The council has also served Article 4 directions in certain conservation areas, which can bring window changes under planning control. If you live in one of these areas, in a listed building, or in a flat, check with Adur and Worthing Councils before you order. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, and the freeholder will normally need to agree. Our planning guide for replacement windows explains the general position.
Neighbouring areas we cover
Alongside the town, we travel to Shoreham Beach, Old Shoreham, Kingston Buci, Southwick and Lancing. Along the coast we have pages for Worthing and Hove, and inland for Horsham.
How a Shoreham job is organised
First comes a free survey, booked on a day we are already working on the Sussex coast. We measure each opening, look at exposure and fixings, and go through glass, colour and hardware. You then receive a written quote; aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide explains what affects the total. We make aluminium frames in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days. Our own fitters then drive down, remove the old frames, fit and seal the new ones and clear up, running bigger jobs over consecutive days. All installations carry a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Is aluminium suitable for a house on Shoreham Beach?
Yes, provided it is specified and looked after properly. Powder-coated aluminium handles coastal conditions well, but salt deposits should be rinsed off the frames and tracks a few times a year to protect the finish and moving parts. At survey we check exposure and fixings so that larger doors facing the sea are built for the wind loads.
Do I need permission to replace windows in Old Shoreham?
Old Shoreham is a conservation area, and Adur has served Article 4 directions in certain conservation areas that can bring window replacements under planning control. Listed buildings always need consent. Check with Adur and Worthing Councils before ordering; we can then provide drawings and product details for any application.
How far is Shoreham-by-Sea from your workshop?
Our workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, is roughly 75 miles from Shoreham by road, usually around an hour and three quarters. We have no office on the coast, so we plan the survey and fitting days in advance and our own team travels from Fifield, staying on the job over consecutive days for larger installations.
Which patio doors give the best sea view?
For views, sliding doors usually win. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliders use large glass panels with relatively slim frames, so you see more glass and less frame when the doors are closed. Bifolds open the full width, which suits a sheltered terrace, but show more frame lines when shut.
Can you replace windows in a Shoreham flat?
We can, but flats have no householder permitted development rights, so check whether planning permission is needed and get the freeholder's or management company's written consent first. Leases often control the style and colour of windows. Once that is agreed, we survey, make and fit as for a house.
