Double Glazing in Maldon: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Choosing double glazing in Maldon means thinking about the Blackwater as much as the house. Wind and damp come straight off the estuary, the historic hilltop streets are closely protected, and Heybridge has its own canal-side character. Inspired Glazing makes aluminium windows and doors at its workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, and its own team installs them in Maldon, Heybridge and the villages around. We also fit UPVC windows, composite doors, bifolds, sliding doors and conservatories.

An old port on a hill

Maldon is one of the oldest recorded towns in Essex, with a charter from 1171 and a Moot Hall from around 1420 on the High Street. The High Street climbs from the church down towards the Hythe, the old quay where the Chelmer meets the Blackwater and Thames sailing barges still tie up. Along the way you will find timber-framed and brick houses of many periods, Georgian fronts and Victorian terraces, plus small cottages in the lanes off the main street.

Away from the centre, the town grew outwards through the twentieth century with semis, bungalows and newer estates. Across the river, Heybridge has its own Victorian and later housing, while Heybridge Basin, where the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation reaches the sea lock, is a waterside cluster of cottages.

Conservation areas and Article 4 directions

Maldon District Council is the planning authority. It lists conservation areas for Maldon, Heybridge Basin and the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, among others. Article 4 directions apply in parts of the Maldon conservation area, specifically around Church Street, North Street, The Hythe and Tenterfield Road, and around Butt Lane and Victoria Road. These directions bring certain works that would normally be permitted development under planning control. If your home is in one of these streets, check with Maldon District Council what the direction covers before you order new windows or doors.

The government has confirmed that Greater Essex will be reorganised into five unitary councils, expected from April 2028 subject to parliamentary approval. Until then, Maldon District Council remains responsible. See our planning permission guide for the wider picture.

Estuary weather and flood awareness

The town waterfront and the Hythe have their own Environment Agency flood warning area, and homes on the river side are exposed to salt-laden air. For these properties, powder-coated aluminium is hard-wearing, and our surveyor will advise on hardware and threshold details for doors facing the water. Homes higher up the hill have fewer problems with damp but are still exposed to strong easterly winds.

Recommended products for Maldon homes

We do not manufacture timber windows. For a timber appearance, we offer woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium, and composite doors.

For small waterside cottages, especially at Heybridge Basin, where the existing windows may need to stay, secondary glazing fitted inside the frame is worth considering. It reduces draughts and noise without altering the outside of the building. We can also supply blinds and shutters to finish the rooms once the work is done.

Planning your project from Fifield

We have no Essex branch. Our team comes from Fifield, which is roughly 80 miles from Maldon by road and usually around an hour and three-quarters via the M25, A12 and A414. That is a long way for a single quick visit, so we plan surveys and installations in advance around the journey.

After the free survey you get a written quote. Aluminium windows start from £400, lead times start from around 10 days, and installations carry a 10-year guarantee. Our double glazing cost guide helps with early budgeting.

Places we cover

Frequently asked questions

Which Maldon streets have Article 4 directions?

Maldon District Council lists Article 4 directions covering parts of the Maldon conservation area around Church Street, North Street, The Hythe and Tenterfield Road, and around Butt Lane and Victoria Road. These bring some normally permitted works under planning control. Check with the council exactly what applies to your property before ordering windows or doors.

Are aluminium windows suitable for homes near the Hythe?

Yes. Polyester powder-coated aluminium is very durable in salty, damp air, which makes it a good fit for waterside homes. As with any window near the sea, hinges and locks benefit from regular cleaning. Our surveyor will recommend suitable hardware and explain simple maintenance for exposed riverside elevations.

Can I get a timber look without timber windows?

Yes. We do not make timber windows, but woodgrain-finish UPVC and aluminium frames give a timber appearance with less maintenance, and composite doors come in wood-effect finishes. In conservation areas or on listed buildings, the council may still require timber, so check with Maldon District Council before choosing.

How far do you travel to Maldon?

Our team travels from our Fifield workshop near Windsor, roughly 80 miles by road, usually around an hour and three-quarters. We do not have a local office, so we arrange survey and fitting dates in advance and plan the work to minimise return trips, keeping disruption to your home low.

Do you install sliding doors in Heybridge homes?

Yes. We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 aluminium sliding doors, which suit homes with garden or water views, as well as Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors. Our surveyor will check the opening, the threshold and any structural work needed, and we include those details in your written quote.
