Georgian high street, Victorian yards, interwar estates

The town’s best-known building is the Old Grammar School, a small timber building of 1614 standing on wooden stilts above an open market space. In the 18th century the town’s timber, mud and thatch buildings were largely replaced with brick, and the wide upper High Street is still lined with mostly unspoilt Georgian buildings. The town centre was declared a conservation area in 1968.

Mid-19th-century growth crowded cottages into the old yards, until public health rules from 1875 required self-contained houses with their own water and sanitation. After 1919 the Bowden Fields Estate was built, roughly 400 houses had gone up by 1928, council housing followed along Welland Park Road and Walcot Road in the 1930s, and the post-war Southern Estate was planned for 700 homes, with a final phase in the 1980s. The district council itself works from the Symington Building, a former corset factory.

Which of our products fit

For brick period houses off the High Street, the Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casement opens outwards and keeps sightlines narrow, while Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows give extra profile choices; our aluminium windows and doors page has the detail. Interwar and post-war houses on the council-built estates are well served by UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system and a composite front door.

For opening a kitchen to the garden, we fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors and Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors, and we design conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns. Porches, secondary glazing, garage doors, fascias, soffits, guttering, blinds and shutters are also available. We do not make timber windows or doors; woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium, or composite, gives the timber look.

Planning in Harborough district

Market Harborough is in Leicestershire, with Harborough District Council as the planning authority and Leicestershire County Council as the upper tier. The town is unparished, so there is no town council. Besides the town centre conservation area, the district council lists conservation areas at nearby Great Bowden and Foxton, among many others across the district.

With so many Georgian frontages on the High Street, check with Harborough District Council before replacing windows on a building in the conservation area or a listed property. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so they may need planning permission and the freeholder’s consent. Read our planning permission guide for the questions to ask.

The Welland and the canal

The River Welland runs through the town, and serious flooding hit the centre on 2 July 1958, after which the riverbed was straightened and deepened as a flood relief scheme. A branch of the Grand Union Canal ends at Union Wharf in the north of the town and joins the main line near Foxton, where Foxton Locks climb in two staircases of five. If your home is close to the river or canal, mention any past damp problems so we can look carefully at thresholds and sills.

We cover Little Bowden and Great Bowden, Lubenham, Foxton by the locks, Kibworth and Great Oxendon over the county border in Northamptonshire. See our pages for double glazing in Kettering and Corby.

Frequently asked questions

Will you really travel to Market Harborough?

Yes. Our workshop is in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 90 miles away by road, around an hour and three-quarters. That is at the edge of our area, so we plan surveys and installations in advance and group visits where we can. We have no office or showroom in Leicestershire; our surveyor brings samples to you and our own fitters install.

Is Market Harborough town centre a conservation area?

Yes. The town centre was declared a conservation area in 1968, and the upper High Street has many Georgian buildings. Harborough District Council is the planning authority, and it also lists conservation areas at Great Bowden and Foxton. Check with Harborough District Council before replacing windows on a property in these areas or a listed building.

Can I get slim windows for a Georgian house on the High Street?

Our slimmest aluminium option is the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement. Whether it is acceptable on a Georgian frontage is a planning question, particularly if the building is listed or in the conservation area, where timber may be expected. We do not make timber windows. Check with Harborough District Council first, and we will be candid at survey.

Do you fit conservatories in Great Bowden and Lubenham?

Yes, we design and build conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns across the villages around Market Harborough, including Great Bowden, Lubenham and Foxton. Great Bowden and Foxton have conservation areas, so check with Harborough District Council before you proceed. Our surveyor looks at the site, the house and access before recommending a design.

How long does an order take for Market Harborough?

Aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days after order. Because Market Harborough is around an hour and three-quarters away, we agree your installation date in advance so the team can plan the journey. Your written quote and order confirmation set out the timetable for your job.
