A coal town built of white lias
Midsomer Norton is an old market town that grew quickly on the back of the Somerset coalfield. The Duchy of Cornwall held most of the mineral rights, small pits were working from the eighteenth century, and the last one, Norton Hill, closed in 1966. The River Somer runs the length of the town centre, channelled along the High Street behind its Victorian railings.
That history is written into the houses. Bath and North East Somerset Council’s appraisal of the Midsomer Norton and Welton Conservation Area describes local white lias limestone as the material that ties the town together, with clay pantiles and slate on the roofs. You will find seventeenth- and eighteenth-century houses around the High Street and Church Square, Italianate buildings from the 1860s boom, and rows of late Victorian miners’ cottages in Welton and along Radstock Road. Twentieth-century estates and newer infill fill in the edges of the town and run into Westfield.
Conservation area homes: speak to the council first
The conservation area has three parts: the historic core of Midsomer Norton, the Welton core, and Silver Street. The council’s appraisal notes that most original painted timber sashes and casements here have already been replaced, and it states a preference for traditional timber windows on historic buildings. We do not make timber windows or doors, so if your house sits inside the boundary, or is listed, please check with Bath and North East Somerset Council before you commit to anything. We can give you drawings and product details to take to them. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows explains the general position.
Outside the conservation area, most houses can have like-for-like replacement windows without an application, but it is always worth confirming with the council if you are unsure.
What we would suggest for local houses
Stone cottages and terraces
Narrow miners’ cottages often have small, deep-set openings in thick stone walls. Our aluminium windows, led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, have slim sightlines that let more light into small rooms. Cortizo and Alunet aluminium ranges give alternative styles. For a front door, a composite door gives the look of a painted panelled door with very little upkeep.
Post-war semis and newer estates
For later houses with tired frames, UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a sensible like-for-like replacement, and woodgrain finishes are available if you want a softer look.
Opening up to the garden
Where there is room for a wide opening at the back of the house, our patio doors include the Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding door, and our bifold doors come from Smart Visofold and Cortizo. If you want a new room rather than a new door, see our conservatories and orangeries.

Alongside the town itself we can quote in Radstock, which adjoins it, plus Paulton, Welton, Westfield, Chilcompton and Clandown. If you are further north or east, see our pages for Bath, Frome and Keynsham.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have a branch near Midsomer Norton?
No. Our only premises are our workshop and office at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Midsomer Norton is roughly 100 miles away by road, usually around two hours' drive. We plan surveys and installation dates in advance so the journey is built into the job, and the same team that surveys your home carries out the fitting.
Can I fit double glazing in the Midsomer Norton conservation area?
Possibly, but check with Bath and North East Somerset Council first. Its appraisal of the Midsomer Norton and Welton Conservation Area favours traditional timber windows on historic buildings, and we do not make timber. Listed buildings need listed building consent. We can supply drawings and product details to help you put the question to the council.
Which windows suit a stone miners' cottage?
Small openings in thick lias walls benefit from slim frames. Our Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casement keeps sightlines narrow and lets more light in, while Cortizo and Alunet ranges offer other styles. If the cottage is outside the conservation area and you prefer UPVC, our Selecta Advance 70 windows come in woodgrain finishes too.
How much do aluminium windows cost in Midsomer Norton?
Our aluminium windows start from £400. The final figure depends on size, opening style, glass, colour and how many windows you replace together. Because of the distance, grouping your windows, doors or a conservatory into one visit usually makes the most sense. A free survey gives you a fixed written quote.
How long does an installation take to arrange?
Lead times start from 10 days once you have approved the survey measurements, because we fabricate the aluminium frames in our own Fifield workshop. For Midsomer Norton we then fix an installation date that suits both you and the travel plan, and we confirm it in writing well ahead of the fitting day.
