Needle town, then new town

By the end of the 19th century, around 90 per cent of the world’s needles were made in and around Redditch, alongside fishing tackle and, later, springs. The old centre grew around Church Green and St Stephen’s Church, built in 1854 to 1855, with late Georgian buildings on Church Green East and more ornate Victorian ones nearby, in local brick under Welsh slate roofs.

Then, on 10 April 1964, Redditch was designated a new town to take overspill from Birmingham, and its population grew from about 32,000 to over 70,000 within twenty years. Church Hill, Matchborough, Winyates, Greenlands and Woodrow were built in that wave, with the New Town districts to the south and east following in the 1970s and 1980s. Many of these estates use a Radburn-style layout that separates fast roads from homes, so front doors often face footpaths and green space rather than the street.

Historically much of the town lay in Warwickshire, but it is now wholly in Worcestershire, and Feckenham is the borough’s only civil parish. The new town layout matters on survey day for another reason. New town houses tend to share window sizes and styles across a whole street, which makes like-for-like replacement straightforward, while the older terraces around Headless Cross and the centre vary much more.

Church Green and Feckenham: talk to the council first

Redditch Borough Council handles planning, and it has two conservation areas: Church Green in the town centre, and the medieval village of Feckenham with its timber-framed and Georgian brick buildings around The Green. The council’s leaflet is direct: traditional window design is part of their character, replacements should copy it, and modern plastic or aluminium windows are considered inappropriate. The Church Green appraisal notes multi-paned vertical sliding sashes as typical.

So if your home is in either area, check with Redditch Borough Council before anything else. We do not make timber windows, and in these streets we may well recommend secondary glazing instead. Outside the conservation areas most houses can replace windows under permitted development, though flats have no householder permitted development rights and need permission. Our replacement windows planning guide explains more.

We arrange a free survey on a day our surveyor is in Worcestershire. They measure up, check the condition of the openings and show you frame and colour samples. A written quote follows, with aluminium windows from £400; our double glazing cost guide explains the rest. Aluminium frames are made in Fifield with lead times from 10 days, and our own fitters then travel up on the date agreed, install and seal the new frames and take the old ones away. Every installation has a 10-year guarantee, and we are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit UPVC or aluminium windows in Church Green or Feckenham?

Redditch Borough Council's conservation leaflet says replacements in its conservation areas should copy traditional window design and that modern plastic or aluminium windows are considered inappropriate. Check with the council before ordering. As we do not make timber windows, secondary glazing may be the better option for these homes.

Do you replace windows on Redditch new town estates?

Yes. Houses in areas such as Matchborough, Winyates, Church Hill and Woodrow are usually straightforward like-for-like replacements, often in UPVC using the Selecta Advance 70 system, or in aluminium if you want slimmer frames. We match sizes and styles so the elevation stays consistent with your neighbours.

How far away is your team from Redditch?

Our only base is at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor. Redditch is roughly 95 miles away by road, usually around an hour and three-quarters via the M40 and M42. We plan surveys and installations in advance and bring all samples to your home, so you do not need to visit us.

What is the starting price for aluminium windows?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 each. The total depends on window sizes, opening styles, glass, colour and how many you replace in one go. We give a written, itemised quote after the free survey, and our double glazing cost guide explains the main factors beforehand.

Do you fit composite front doors in Redditch?

Yes. Composite doors combine a strong core with a timber-look finish that does not need repainting, and they suit both new town houses and older terraces. We measure and supply the door, fit it with our own installers and can match it to new windows fitted at the same time.
