Stratford’s homes beyond the tourist streets
Visitors know the Elizabethan buildings on the town’s historic spine, Harvard House on High Street, the much-altered houses of Henley Street and the guild buildings on Church Street. The Old Town, with Hall’s Croft and Holy Trinity Church, sits towards the river. These are some of the most protected buildings anywhere, and window work on them is a specialist planning matter.
Most Stratford households live elsewhere: in Victorian and twentieth-century streets around Bridge Town, Clopton and Bishopton, and in former villages now joined to the town, such as Shottery, Tiddington and Alveston. New housing continues, with plans for around 800 homes at Shottery, up to 500 at Bishopton and 270 on Loxley Road. That is where most double glazing work happens: replacing tired frames on established houses, and adding garden doors or conservatories to newer ones.
Stratford also sits close to the northern edge of the Cotswolds, and homes in villages to the south often take their cue from Cotswold styles. Where that look matters to you, we talk through frame colours, glazing bar patterns and slim sightlines at the survey, rather than offering one standard window. The same applies in the town’s Victorian streets, where original bay windows and door surrounds deserve to be kept and framed properly, not hidden behind bulky replacements.
Conservation, flooding and the council
Stratford-on-Avon District Council is the planning authority, and its district contains 75 conservation areas. The council is reviewing eight of them, Stratford-on-Avon among them, with formal consultation planned for 2026. If your home is listed, inside a conservation area or a flat, check with Stratford-on-Avon District Council before ordering windows. Flats have no householder permitted development rights. Our planning permission guide sets out the general rules.
The town’s riverside position makes it susceptible to flooding, including flash floods. If you are planning a conservatory or extension on lower ground near the Avon, check the Environment Agency flood map first.
Council structures are changing too. Local government in Warwickshire is being reorganised, so check which council handles planning at the time you apply.
Matching our range to Stratford properties
For period houses, our Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casement opens outwards and has slim frames. We do not make timber windows or doors; woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium and composite doors are our timber-look options, and the council’s view will decide what is possible on protected buildings.
For Victorian and twentieth-century homes, UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system are good value, and Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows offer more colour and slimmer sightlines.
For garden access, choose Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds or Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors. We also build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns, and supply secondary glazing, which can suit listed homes where replacement is not allowed.
Areas we cover around Stratford
As well as the town and its suburbs we travel to Snitterfield, Wilmcote, Clifford Chambers and Wellesbourne. Nearby pages cover double glazing in Warwick, Leamington Spa and Evesham.
Our process from Fifield
We start with a free survey, measuring each opening and discussing glass, colours and any consent issues. You receive a written quote; aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide explains what affects it. Frames are made in Fifield with lead times from 10 days. Installation days are booked together so our fitters can drive up and work straight through. Every installation has a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fit double glazing in a listed Stratford house?
Listed buildings need listed building consent for most window changes, and replacement is often refused on historic frontages. Secondary glazing fitted inside the existing windows can be an alternative. Check with Stratford-on-Avon District Council before committing, and we can advise on options at a free survey.
Is Stratford-upon-Avon within your area?
Yes, although it is one of our longer journeys. Stratford is roughly 80 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, around an hour and a half's drive. We plan surveys and fitting days in advance and our own team travels from Fifield; we have no Warwickshire showroom or local subcontractors.
Which council handles planning for Stratford-upon-Avon?
Stratford-on-Avon District Council handles planning applications for the town today. Local government in Warwickshire is being reorganised, so check the council website for the current position when you apply. For listed buildings or conservation areas, ask the council about consent before you order, and we can supply drawings and specifications to support your application.
What would suit a 1960s house in Tiddington or Bishopton?
Mid-century houses usually suit UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system for value, or Cortizo and Alunet aluminium for slimmer frames and colours such as grey or black. A composite front door and aluminium bifold or sliding doors to the garden complete the upgrade. We show options at the survey.
How much should I budget for aluminium windows?
Aluminium windows start from £400 each. Size, style, glass, colour and quantity all affect the total, so a written quote after a free survey is the reliable figure. Lead times start from 10 days once measurements are agreed. Our double glazing cost guide explains the main price factors.
