Where the ancient roads cross
Royston grew where Ermine Street meets the Icknield Way, on the northern slopes of the chalk downs. Beneath the central crossroads is Royston Cave, carved from chalk and rediscovered in 1742, and to the south-west lies Therfield Heath, the open downland and nature reserve that overlooks the town. Until 1896 the county boundary ran right through the centre along Baldock Street and Melbourn Street, when the whole town was placed in Hertfordshire.
The housing reflects that long history. The centre has timber-framed, Georgian and Victorian buildings, many of them listed. Around it are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, then interwar and post-war semis and bungalows, and more recent estates towards the A505 bypass. Exposed sites on the higher ground near the heath catch the wind, so well-sealed frames make a real difference to comfort.
Traffic is another consideration. The A505 bypass runs along the northern edge of the town and the A10 heads south towards London, while the railway to Cambridge and King’s Cross passes close to many homes. If you live near any of them, ask us about glass choices aimed at reducing noise. Flat owners should remember that flats have no householder permitted development rights and usually need the freeholder’s consent for new windows.
Royston Conservation Area
The Royston Conservation Area was designated in 1969 and covers about 24 hectares of the historic centre, with more than a hundred listed buildings concentrated along High Street, Kneesworth Street, Melbourn Street, Baldock Street, Lower King Street and London Road. Planning is handled by North Hertfordshire District Council. If your home is in the conservation area or listed, check with the council before ordering; for villages over the border in Cambridgeshire, such as Bassingbourn or Melbourn, the planning authority is South Cambridgeshire District Council. Our planning permission for replacement windows guide explains the general rules.
Choosing the right product
For period homes in the centre
Slim outward-opening Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium casements suit many brick and rendered openings and can be powder-coated in subdued colours. A UPVC sash-style window can be a closer visual match on some Victorian fronts. We do not make timber windows, and we will tell you plainly at survey if a listed building needs timber.
For semis, bungalows and newer estates
UPVC windows are the budget-friendly way to replace every window at once. Cortizo and Alunet aluminium give a cleaner modern line; see our aluminium windows and doors page.
For gardens and extra space
Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors, Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns. For the front, a composite door or a porch helps on windier plots.

How we manage the distance
Our workshop at Fifield is roughly 60 miles from Royston by road, typically around an hour and a quarter or more via the M25 and A1(M) or M11. We have no office or showroom locally. To make the journey work for you, we:
- arrange your free survey at a booked time, including Saturday mornings;
- send a written, itemised quote, which you can compare with our double glazing cost guide;
- make the frames in Fifield, with lead times from 10 days;
- schedule fitting days in advance, so our own team arrives with everything needed to finish in one visit where possible.
Aluminium windows start from £400, and our work comes with a 10-year guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
Is Royston in a conservation area?
The historic centre is. The Royston Conservation Area was designated in 1969 and covers about 24 hectares, including High Street, Kneesworth Street, Melbourn Street and Baldock Street, with over a hundred listed buildings. If you live there, check with North Hertfordshire District Council before replacing windows. Homes outside the boundary usually face fewer restrictions on like-for-like replacements.
Which council handles planning for villages near Royston?
Royston and Hertfordshire villages such as Therfield, Barkway and Reed fall under North Hertfordshire District Council. Bassingbourn and Melbourn are in Cambridgeshire, where South Cambridgeshire District Council is the planning authority. Check with the right council before ordering, especially in a conservation area or for a listed building.
Why should I use a company based near Windsor for Royston?
We fabricate aluminium windows in our own Fifield workshop and fit with our own team, which keeps quality and timing in our hands. We are a Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver. The journey is roughly an hour and a quarter, so we plan surveys and fitting dates in advance.
Will new windows help in a windy spot near Therfield Heath?
Old, worn windows often let in draughts around the sashes and frames, which is most noticeable on exposed ground. Modern double-glazed frames with good seals cut draughts and improve comfort. A porch or a well-sealed composite door can also help an exposed entrance. We check the existing frames and openings during the survey.
How long does a window replacement take in Royston?
Lead times start from 10 days after you confirm the order. We then book an installation date that fits around the journey from Fifield, and most houses are fitted in one or two days. Larger projects, such as bifold doors or a conservatory, take longer, and we confirm timings in writing.
