What Huntingdon homes are like

Huntingdon grew in clear phases, and you can usually tell what a house needs from where it sits. The medieval High Street and the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian streets around it are built mainly in pale gault brick with slate roofs. Victoria Square has close-knit Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and Newtown mixes small Edwardian terraces with inter-war semis.

After the war the town took London overspill under the Town Development Act 1952. Oxmoor is the best-known result: 1950s and 1960s terraces laid out on the Radburn principle, with parking courts at the back and footpaths to the front doors. Hartford gained low-density 1970s estates with bungalows and chalet homes, and Stukeley Meadows was built mostly between 1986 and 1998, with buff and red brick and mock-Tudor details. Hinchingbrooke followed in the same era.

Planning in Huntingdon and Godmanchester

Huntingdonshire District Council is the planning authority. Huntingdon’s conservation area is large and covers the historic centre, Victoria Square and Mill Common, and Hartford village has its own. Godmanchester has two, Post Street and Earning Street, and Brampton has one too. If your house is listed, in a conservation area or is a flat, check with Huntingdonshire District Council before ordering. Our planning permission guide covers the basics.

Parts of town near Alconbury Brook and the Great Ouse meadows around Portholme carry flood risk. If your home is close to the water, tell us at survey so we can plan door thresholds sensibly.

Roads, rebuilt junctions and noise

The A14 upgrade changed the town noticeably: the old viaduct over the railway has gone, the Brampton Road flyover was removed in 2021, and the Mill Common Link Road was built as part of the same works. The A141 Spittals Way runs along the northern edge of Stukeley Meadows and the Birds Estate, screened by planting and acoustic fencing. If your bedrooms face one of these routes, mention it when we visit. Better-sealed frames cut the noise that leaks in around old windows, and we can talk through glass choices that suit a road-facing elevation.

Where we cover

As well as the town itself, we fit windows and doors in Godmanchester, Brampton, Hartford, Buckden and the Stukeleys. Nearby, we also cover St Ives, St Neots and Peterborough.

From survey to installation

Huntingdon is roughly 85 miles from Fifield by road, usually around an hour and three quarters to two hours via the M25, A1(M) and A14. With that distance, surveys and installations are planned in advance around the journey rather than squeezed in at short notice.

The surveyor measures every opening, discusses colours, glass and hardware, and sends a written quote. Our cost guide explains what moves the price. Once you go ahead, aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop and our own fitters install them, remove the old frames and tidy up.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace the windows on an Oxmoor terrace in Huntingdon?

Yes. Oxmoor's 1950s and 1960s terraces usually have straightforward openings that suit UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system or aluminium if you prefer slimmer frames. If you rent from a housing association or own a leasehold home, check permissions first. Our surveyor will measure the front and the rear doors onto the parking courts.

Do I need permission for new windows in Huntingdon's conservation area?

Houses in a conservation area often keep permitted development rights for like-for-like replacement windows, but listed buildings, flats and any homes covered by an Article 4 direction do not. Check with Huntingdonshire District Council before ordering. This also applies in Godmanchester's Post Street and Earning Street areas and in Hartford.

How far do your fitters travel to reach Huntingdon?

Our team is based at Fifield near Windsor, roughly 85 miles from Huntingdon by road, a drive of around an hour and three quarters to two hours. We have no local office, so we plan survey and installation dates in advance and schedule the work to make the most of each trip.

What doors suit a 1990s house at Stukeley Meadows?

Many homes from that period have ageing patio doors. A Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding door gives large glass panes with slim aluminium frames, while Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds fold the whole opening back. For the front, a composite door is a durable choice. The surveyor will check opening widths and sill levels.

Is double glazing worth it for a Hartford bungalow?

For many owners, yes. Bungalows have a lot of window area at ground level, so draughty or misted units make a noticeable difference to comfort. Replacing them with modern aluminium or UPVC frames improves security and reduces draughts. Aluminium windows start from £400, and a free survey gives you an exact price.
