Conservatory shapes for Denham houses

Denham has a broad range of homes, from older brick houses in the conservation area to 1950s estate houses in Denham Garden Village and later homes in Higher Denham. We help you choose a shape that fits the house and leaves enough garden.

Small conservatories work as a garden lobby or home office; a large conservatory can take a dining table and sofa.

Roof types compared

Solid roof conservatories feel like a proper extension, with insulation and a plastered ceiling. Glass roof conservatories keep the room bright, and modern coatings reduce glare and heat. Polycarbonate roofs are lighter and simpler but less effective in hot and cold weather. If you already own a conservatory that is unusable for half the year, ask about replacement conservatory roofs. On plots near the M40, a solid or glass roof also blocks more traffic noise than polycarbonate.

We also build orangeries, with a solid perimeter and a central roof lantern, and front porches for homes where the door faces wind and rain.

Bases near the River Misbourne

The River Misbourne flows through Denham, and some lower-lying ground can be damp. We check soil, drainage and nearby trees before designing the footing, as explained on our conservatory bases page.

Planning rules for a Denham conservatory

Following the Planning Portal guidance, most single-storey rear conservatories are permitted development if they project no more than 3m from the original rear wall of an attached house, or 4m on a detached house, and are no taller than 4m. Eaves within 2m of a boundary must not exceed 3m, and together with other extensions the conservatory cannot cover more than half the land around the original house. Prior approval can allow up to 6m or 8m outside designated land.

The old village is a conservation area, so side extensions there need planning permission and the larger prior-approval depths do not apply. Have a word with Buckinghamshire Council’s planning team before anything is ordered. Our guide to planning permission for conservatories and porches explains more.

Building Regulations generally do not apply to a conservatory that is single storey, at ground level and under 30 square metres, separated from the house by external walls, doors or windows, with its own heating and controls, and with compliant glazing and electrics. Any new structural opening between the house and the conservatory needs approval.

Matching Denham’s brick and character

Red brick is a defining feature of the old village, and a dwarf wall built in a closely matched brick helps a new conservatory sit comfortably against the house. In Denham Garden Village and Denham Green, where houses share a common style, a simple Edwardian or lean-to design in white or grey tends to look neat beside the neighbours. We bring brick and frame samples to the survey so you can compare them on site.

Not ready for a full conservatory? A small front porch can be a useful first project, giving shelter for deliveries and a place for muddy boots.

Colours and garden access

Frames are available in white, woodgrain foils or dual colour, such as anthracite outside and white inside. Into the garden, you can choose uPVC French doors, a sliding patio door or aluminium bifold doors from Smart Visofold or Cortizo.

How much will a conservatory cost?

Every design is priced individually. Our conservatory cost page explains how size, roof, glass and groundwork each affect the total.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a conservatory to a house in the Denham Conservation Area?

Often, yes. A modest rear conservatory may still be permitted development, but side extensions in a conservation area always need planning permission, and the larger prior-approval depths do not apply. A listed house also needs listed building consent. Check with Buckinghamshire Council before ordering, and we will draw a design that respects the character of the old village.

Which conservatory suits a bungalow in Denham?

A lean-to is usually the best fit, because its single-slope roof sits comfortably below low bungalow eaves. Where there is more height, an Edwardian design with a shallow pitch also works well. We measure the eaves and fascia height at survey to make sure the roof will fit without blocking gutters or windows.

Will a solid roof keep my Denham conservatory warmer than glass?

Yes. An insulated solid roof keeps far more heat in during winter and blocks much of the summer sun, so the room stays usable all year. A glass roof with modern coatings still performs much better than old polycarbonate and keeps the room brighter. We explain the trade-off for your garden orientation at survey.

Does the River Misbourne affect conservatory foundations?

It can, on lower-lying plots near the river where the ground holds water. Our surveyor checks the soil, drainage and any nearby trees, then designs a base to suit, which may mean deeper footings or extra damp-proofing. Most Denham gardens need nothing unusual, but we always assess the ground before quoting.

Can I have bifold doors in my conservatory?

Yes. We fit aluminium bifold doors from Smart Visofold or Cortizo, which fold back to open most of one side to the garden. They work well in Edwardian and lean-to designs with a straight front. If you prefer, uPVC French doors or a sliding patio door give a wide opening with fewer moving parts.
