Styles for Iver gardens
Iver’s homes range from old cottages in the village to suburban semis in Richings Park and family houses in Iver Heath, so every design begins with a close look at the house itself. Detached and semi-detached homes often suit a Victorian-style conservatory, with its rounded or faceted front. An Edwardian-style conservatory has a square or rectangular footprint that makes furniture easy to arrange. Regency and Elizabethan designs give a classic, balanced appearance, and a gable-fronted conservatory brings in extra light through its tall end wall.
For terraced houses or narrow plots, a lean-to design is simple and space-efficient. Bigger gardens can take more ambitious layouts:
- L-shaped conservatories that wrap around the corner of the house.
- T-shaped conservatories with a central projection into the garden.
- P-shaped conservatories, which combine a lean-to and a rounded section to create separate spaces.
A small conservatory can make a peaceful home office away from the house, while a large one can become an everyday family room.
Roof options, including for noisy locations
With the motorways and Heathrow nearby, roof choice matters more in Iver than in many places. A solid roof with insulation and a plastered ceiling is much better at keeping out aircraft and traffic noise, and it holds a steadier temperature through the seasons. A glazed roof gives maximum daylight; choose solar-control glass if the room faces south. Polycarbonate roofs on older conservatories let in noise and heat. We can replace them with a solid or glazed roof through our roof replacement service, provided the existing frame and base are sound.
We also build orangeries, which combine brick piers and a roof lantern for a more solid, extension-like feel, and entrance porches that shelter the front door and add storage.
A proper base
A conservatory is only as good as its foundations. We excavate and construct a damp-proofed, insulated base suited to the ground conditions; read more on our foundations and bases page. Ground conditions vary across the Colne Valley, with its lakes and canal, so we check the soil and drainage at the survey.
Planning rules and Building Regulations
Conservatories fall under the same permitted development rules as other house extensions, as set out by the Planning Portal. A single-storey rear extension can extend 3 metres from the original rear wall of an attached house, or 4 metres for a detached house, with a 4-metre height limit. Eaves within 2 metres of a boundary cannot exceed 3 metres in height, and extensions and outbuildings must not cover more than half the land around the original house. In the Iver Conservation Area, side extensions need planning permission and the larger prior-approval route is not available.
A conservatory is normally exempt from Building Regulations if it is single storey, at ground level, under 30 square metres, separated from the house by external-quality walls, doors or windows, and has its own independent heating, with glazing and electrics that meet the requirements. Knocking through to form a new structural opening will need Building Regulations approval regardless. Green Belt and conservation rules can also affect projects, so check with Buckinghamshire Council for your address. Our conservatory planning permission guide explains more.
Comfort through the seasons
A conservatory in Iver should work as well in February as it does in June. Opening roof vents and trickle vents keep air moving on warm days, and a separate radiator or electric heater with its own controls keeps the room usable in winter without breaching the Building Regulations exemption. We also supply fitted blinds and shutters, which cut glare, add privacy from neighbouring gardens and help hold warmth in on cold evenings.
Frame colours and doors
White uPVC is bright and clean, woodgrain foils suit older properties, and dual colour frames, such as a coloured outside with a white inside, may be available; ask us to confirm. To connect the room to the garden, choose French doors, sliding patio doors or aluminium bifolds from Smart Visofold or Cortizo.
Understanding the cost
Costs depend on the size, roof type, base, glazing and doors. Our guide to conservatory costs explains the main factors, and we provide a written quote after the survey. Our work is covered by our 10-year guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
Does Green Belt status stop me building a conservatory in Iver?
Not necessarily. Many rear conservatories on existing houses can still be built under permitted development, within the size and height limits. However, Green Belt policy matters for anything that needs a planning application, and some homes have had permitted development rights removed. Check with Buckinghamshire Council for your address before finalising the design.
Will a conservatory be too noisy near the M25 and Heathrow?
A glass or polycarbonate roof lets in more sound, which is a real issue in Iver. A solid insulated roof makes a big difference, and acoustic glass in the side frames helps further. We discuss noise at the survey and suggest a roof and glazing combination that keeps the room comfortable.
What is the best conservatory for a Richings Park semi?
Many Richings Park semis suit an Edwardian or Victorian design across the back of the house, or a lean-to if the garden is narrow. Under permitted development, the depth from the original rear wall is limited to 3 metres for a semi without prior approval. We measure the plot and suggest a design that fits comfortably.
Can you replace a conservatory roof without rebuilding the whole room?
Yes, if the frames and base are sound. We remove the old roof and fit a solid or glazed replacement onto the existing structure. A solid roof is heavier, so we check that the frames and foundations can carry the load. If they cannot, we will explain the options honestly.
How long does a conservatory project take in Iver?
Timescales depend on the size and design, plus the groundwork. The base comes first, followed by the frame, roof and glazing, then internal finishing for a solid roof. We give you a clear schedule at the quote stage. Our team travels from Fifield, about 25 minutes away, so we can be on site early each day.
