Inspired Glazing builds uPVC conservatories in West Drayton, Yiewsley and Harmondsworth, designed around compact London gardens and the extra noise of living close to Heathrow. Designing for West Drayton gardens

Terraced gardens near the station and the canal are long and narrow, interwar semis have wider plots, and the post-war estates often have modest, square gardens. The style and roof you choose should fit both the space and the sound environment. A conservatory here is often used as a quiet reading room or a children’s playroom, so we ask how you plan to use it before we draw anything, because that shapes the roof, the glass and the heating. Our conservatories page shows the full range.

Space-saving styles

Lean-to conservatories are the most practical choice behind a terrace, with a low pitch that stays clear of upstairs windows. A small Edwardian also works well where there is enough depth.

Traditional designs

Victorian conservatories have a faceted end that softens the back of a period house, while Edwardian conservatories give a squarer room that is easy to furnish. Regency and Elizabethan versions dress the square plan with more decorative roof detail, and a gable front brings extra height and light.

Larger layouts

On wider plots, T-shaped conservatories create a central living space flanked by two wings, L-shaped conservatories wrap round a corner, and P-shaped conservatories combine a long lean-to with a rounded end.

Roofs and aircraft noise

This is where West Drayton differs most from quieter areas. Polycarbonate roofs are light but do little to block aircraft noise or rain drumming. Solid roof conservatories, with an insulated, tiled roof, are much better at keeping both noise and temperature extremes out, which is why we recommend them for many homes under the flight paths. If you want more daylight, glass roof conservatories with laminated, solar-control units are a strong alternative. An existing room that is too noisy to use can often be rescued with a replacement conservatory roof.

A firm footing

Parts of the area lie in the low ground of the Colne valley, so we check soil, levels and drainage before designing the foundations. Our conservatory bases page explains how we build a level, insulated floor that stays dry.

Permitted development and Building Regulations

The Planning Portal sets the limits for a conservatory under permitted development. Behind a terraced or semi-detached house it can usually extend 3m beyond the original rear wall, or 4m on a detached house, with a maximum height of 4m and eaves of no more than 3m within 2m of a boundary. A side conservatory must be single storey and no wider than half the original house, and all extensions combined must not cover more than half the land around it. Flats and maisonettes need permission.

West Drayton Green, Harmondsworth Village and Longford Village are conservation areas, so check with Hillingdon Council before building there. Read our guide to planning permission for conservatories and porches for more. Building Regulations do not normally apply if the conservatory is single storey, at ground level, below 30 square metres, separated from the house by external doors or windows, heated independently with its own controls, and compliant on glazing and electrics. Opening up the wall into the house requires approval.

Colours and doors

Frames come in white, woodgrain foils and dual colours, such as anthracite outside with white inside. To reach the garden, choose French doors, sliding patio doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo aluminium bifold doors.

Orangeries and porches

An orangery, with brick piers and a central lantern, feels more like a permanent extension and holds heat well. Our porches give terraced houses a buffer against noise and weather at the front door. Fitted with acoustic glass, a porch adds an extra barrier between a busy street and the hall, and a roof lantern can brighten a dark kitchen extension at the back.

Costs and nearby areas

Our conservatory cost guide explains what affects your budget. We also build conservatories in Iver, Hillingdon and Hayes. For new glazing in the rest of the house, see our West Drayton uPVC windows and doors page.

Frequently asked questions

Which conservatory roof is quietest under the Heathrow flight path?

An insulated solid roof gives the best noise reduction, because its mass and insulation absorb far more sound than thin polycarbonate or standard glass. If you would rather keep a glazed roof, ask about laminated units. We can also fit acoustic glass in the side frames so the walls and roof perform together.

Can I build a conservatory in a West Drayton terrace garden?

Usually, yes. A lean-to is the most common choice because it suits narrow gardens and sits below first-floor windows. On a terraced house, permitted development generally allows up to 3m from the original rear wall. Eaves height is restricted within 2m of a boundary, which affects most terraces, so we design around that.

Is my home in a conservation area?

West Drayton Green, Harmondsworth Village and Longford Village are all conservation areas in Hillingdon. If your home is within one, some permitted development rights are limited, especially for side extensions. Check with Hillingdon Council, which publishes maps of each area, before you order. We can supply drawings if an application is needed.

Will a conservatory need Building Regulations approval?

Not normally, as long as it is single storey, at ground level, under 30 square metres, separated from the house by external-quality doors or windows, and has independently controlled heating. Glazing and electrical work must still comply. If you want to remove the back wall to make one open space, Building Regulations approval is needed.

Can you replace an old polycarbonate roof in West Drayton?

Yes, and it is one of the most effective upgrades for homes near the airport. Replacing polycarbonate with an insulated solid roof cuts noise and keeps the room comfortable year round. We first check that the existing base and frames are sound enough to carry the new roof, then design it to suit.
