uPVC conservatory โ€“ Weybridge

A conservatory for every kind of Weybridge home

Weybridge has an unusually wide spread of housing, from the nineteenth-century houses of Oatlands village and Portmore Park to interwar semis, post-war estates and the large plots on St George’s Hill. For a terrace or a semi with a modest garden, a lean-to conservatory is often the most practical choice. Victorian and Edwardian villas suit traditional shapes, while detached houses can take larger combination designs.

Styles and layouts

Victorian conservatories feature a bay-style front with several facets and a steep roof, ideal for period houses in Weybridge. Edwardian conservatories are square or rectangular, giving a practical space that is simple to furnish. Regency and Elizabethan styles offer different roof lines and detailing on these classic shapes. Gable conservatories have an upright front that creates a tall, airy room.

For larger homes, L-shaped conservatories wrap around a corner of the house, T-shaped conservatories extend from the centre of the rear wall, and P-shaped conservatories join a lean-to with a rounded end. Small conservatories make a garden-facing study, and large conservatories can house a kitchen-diner overflow or a playroom.

Roof types for Weybridge conservatories

A polycarbonate roof is the lightest and most economical, though noisier and less insulating. Glass roof conservatories are brighter, with solar-control and self-cleaning glass to reduce glare and maintenance. A solid roof conservatory with insulated tiles keeps the temperature steady and feels like an extension of the house.

If you already own a conservatory that is too hot in summer, a replacement conservatory roof may be the answer, assuming the frames and base are sound. Orangeries give a more permanent look, with brick piers and a roof lantern set into a flat perimeter roof.

Foundations near the rivers

Parts of Weybridge are close to the Wey and the Thames and sit only a few metres above them, so floor levels and drainage deserve attention. We assess the ground and any nearby trees before designing the base. See our conservatory bases page, and check the Environment Agency flood map for your address.

Planning permission for a Weybridge conservatory

The Planning Portal sets out the permitted development limits that apply. A rear conservatory can extend up to 3 metres from the original rear wall of an attached house, or 4 metres for a detached house, with a maximum height of 4 metres, and eaves of no more than 3 metres within 2 metres of a boundary. It must not be forward of the principal elevation, and all extensions together must not cover more than half the land around the original house. Side conservatories are limited to a single storey, 4 metres high and half the original width. With prior approval, rear projections of 6 or 8 metres are possible outside designated land.

Inside the Weybridge Town Centre or Monument Green conservation areas, side conservatories need planning permission. Check with Elmbridge Borough Council, which becomes part of the new East Surrey Council from April 2027, and on St George’s Hill check the estate covenants as well. Read our guide to planning permission for Weybridge conservatories and porches for more.

When Building Regulations do not apply

A conservatory is normally exempt if it is single storey at ground level, under 30 square metres in floor area, separated from the house by external-quality walls, doors or windows, has independent heating with its own controls, and meets the rules on glazing and fixed electrics. Removing the original back wall to join the conservatory to a Weybridge living room requires approval.

Frame colours and doors to the garden

Frames are available in white, woodgrain foils or dual colour. Garden access can be through French doors, a sliding patio door, or aluminium bifolds from the Smart Visofold or Cortizo ranges, and we can fit blinds to control glare.

Porches

A porch shelters the front door and keeps the hall warmer. Under permitted development, a porch can have a floor area of up to 3 square metres and a height of up to 3 metres, and no part may be within 2 metres of a boundary with a highway.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a conservatory on St George's Hill?

Planning rules are set by Elmbridge Borough Council, and permitted development may cover a rear conservatory on a detached house. St George's Hill was laid out under strict covenants, so check the estate rules as well before committing. We can provide drawings and specifications to support both the planning and covenant approval processes.

Which conservatory style suits an Oatlands period house?

A Victorian design with a faceted front, or an Edwardian room with a square plan, usually suits the nineteenth-century houses in Oatlands. Woodgrain or dual colour frames help the new room sit comfortably against older brickwork. If the house is listed or in a conservation area, check with Elmbridge Borough Council first.

Is my Weybridge garden at risk of flooding?

Some lower-lying streets close to the Wey and the Thames are at greater risk than higher ground. Check the Environment Agency flood map for your address and tell us about any past flooding. We then plan floor levels, drainage and thresholds carefully so the conservatory and the house are better protected.

Is a glass or solid roof better in Weybridge?

A glass roof gives the brightest room and suits north or east-facing gardens. A solid tiled roof is better for south-facing plots, where glass can overheat in summer, and it keeps heat in during winter. Many owners choose a solid roof with a glazed lantern to get the best of both.

How long does a conservatory take from order to completion?

It depends on size, roof type and groundwork. After the survey and design, we give a realistic timetable covering the base, dwarf walls, frames and roof. Weybridge is about 35 to 40 minutes from our Fifield workshop, so our team can be on site each working day once the build begins.
