uPVC Conservatories in Shepperton

Inspired Glazing builds uPVC conservatories in Shepperton to suit riverside cottages, post-war family homes and 1960s houses alike, with lean-to, Victorian, Edwardian and combination designs under solid, glass or polycarbonate roofs. We drive in from Fifield, typically 30 to 40 minutes away, and look after the base, frames and roof with our own team. Because we handle every stage, you deal with one firm from the first sketch to the final clean-up, and there is no gap between the builder and the glazier for problems to fall into. A 10-year guarantee comes with every build.

Conservatories by the river

Shepperton is low-lying, with flood meadows by the Thames only about 9 metres above sea level. The Desborough Cut has made flooding much less frequent than in the past, but ground levels, drainage and floor heights still deserve careful thought, particularly in Lower Halliford and near the water. Our survey covers those points along with the orientation of the garden, nearby trees and how the room will connect to your kitchen or lounge.

Designs we build

Whether you want a small conservatory for morning coffee or a large one for family life, our main conservatories page shows each option.

Roofs and related structures

A solid-roofed conservatory is insulated and plastered inside, so it behaves much like an extension and suits rooms used all year. A glazed roof gives views of the sky and works well on north-facing plots that need more light. Polycarbonate roofs are the lightest and most economical, though noisier and less thermally efficient. For an existing conservatory that is uncomfortable, a new replacement roof often solves the problem if the frames are sound.

We also design orangeries with brick piers and a lantern roof, and entrance porches that add a buffer against cold air at the front door.

Planning permission and Building Regulations

Under the permitted development rules summarised by the Planning Portal, a single-storey rear addition can usually reach 3 metres beyond the original rear wall of a semi-detached or terraced house, or 4 metres for a detached house. The maximum height is 4 metres, eaves within 2 metres of a boundary are capped at 3 metres, and all extensions together may cover no more than half the land around the original house. Prior approval can allow 6 or 8 metres. Flats and maisonettes have no permitted development rights. Read our guide to conservatory and porch planning for more.

Building Regulations normally do not apply if the conservatory is single storey, built at ground level, less than 30 square metres, separated from the house by external walls, doors or windows, and heated independently with separate controls, with compliant glazing and electrics. A new opening knocked through into the house still needs approval. Owners of listed buildings, or of homes in the Shepperton or Lower Halliford conservation areas, should check with Spelthorne Borough Council first; West Surrey Council takes over its planning role on 1 April 2027.

Foundations, frame colours and garden doors

On low ground especially, a well-built base is essential. Our base and foundation page explains the groundwork and dwarf walls. Frames come in white, woodgrain, or dual colour, such as grey outside with white inside to match modern windows. For garden access, choose uPVC French doors, sliding patio doors, or aluminium bifolds by Smart Visofold or Cortizo.

Budgeting for your conservatory

Size, roof, base and doors account for most of the difference between one project and another. Our conservatory costs page explains each factor, and following the survey we prepare a written quotation for your Shepperton home, laid out line by line so nothing is hidden.

Nearby Thames towns

We also build in Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge and Sunbury-on-Thames. If the rest of the house needs new glazing, read about our Shepperton uPVC windows and doors.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a conservatory near the Thames in Shepperton?

In most cases, yes. Shepperton's riverside land is low-lying, so we check ground levels, drainage and floor height carefully during the survey and design the base for the site. If your home is in Lower Halliford or another sensitive location, check with Spelthorne Borough Council about any local requirements before building.

What size conservatory can I build without planning permission?

A semi-detached or terraced house can usually add a rear conservatory up to 3 metres deep, and a detached house up to 4 metres, under permitted development. Height, eaves and land coverage limits apply, and flats are not covered. Larger additions need prior approval or a full householder application.

Which conservatory style suits a 1960s Shepperton house?

Clean, simple shapes work best with modernist architecture. An Edwardian design with a low-pitch roof or a lean-to keeps lines crisp, and grey or black dual colour frames echo contemporary windows. A solid roof can make the room feel like part of the original house rather than an add-on.

Is a glass or solid roof better for a north-facing garden?

A north-facing conservatory gets less direct sun, so a glass roof can help bring daylight into the room and into the house behind it. A solid roof with roof windows or a lantern is a good compromise if you also want warmth in winter. We look at light levels during the survey.

Do you build porches in Shepperton?

Yes. A uPVC porch protects the front door from wind and rain, gives space for coats and shoes, and helps keep warm air in the hall. Small porches are often permitted development, subject to size and position limits, but check with Spelthorne Borough Council if your home is listed or in a conservation area.
