A valley town with a long High Street
Berkhamsted runs along the valley floor, with the Grand Union Canal and River Bulbourne cutting through the middle and the Chiltern Hills rising on either side. Its oldest buildings, many half-timbered, line the High Street and Castle Street. From 1868, middle-class villas spread south of the High Street, which is why so many roads on that side have generous Victorian and Edwardian houses with bays and tall windows.
The twentieth century added more variety. Sunnyside joined the town in 1909; after 1918 part of the Berkhamsted Hall estate was sold, and council housing followed west of Swing Gate Lane and at Gossoms End. The north side of the valley stayed largely open until the Ashridge estate was sold in the 1930s, after which housing went up at each end of Bridgewater Road. Northchurch, absorbed in 1935, has its own mix of cottages and later family homes.
The Berkhamsted Conservation Area and Dacorum
The Berkhamsted Conservation Area is large, at around 117 hectares, and takes in about 61 listed buildings, including the Church of St Peter and Dean Incent’s House. Planning is handled by Dacorum Borough Council, which has published a conservation area character appraisal. If your home is inside the boundary or listed, check with Dacorum Borough Council before ordering, because window design on the street side is often closely considered. Our planning permission guide explains how consent works in general.
The surrounding commons and the Ashridge estate sit within the Chilterns National Landscape and Green Belt, which can influence extensions and conservatories on the edge of town.
Canal-side and commuter homes
Berkhamsted’s station on the West Coast Main Line makes it a popular commuter town, and buyers moving in often plan to update windows and doors soon after. Homes close to the canal and the railway also tend to be the ones where noise and condensation come up most at survey. Well-fitted double glazing with good seals deals with both, and where the original windows on a listed or conservation-area house must stay, secondary glazing behind them is often the most sensible way to improve comfort without changing the street view.
Our recommendations by house type
Victorian and Edwardian villas south of the High Street
Many owners here want slim frames that respect big openings. Reynaers SlimLine 68 is an outward-opening aluminium casement with narrow sightlines, and our Cortizo and Alunet ranges give more choice of profile. Aluminium windows start from £400. We do not make timber windows, so where a like-for-like timber sash is required, we will say so honestly.
Interwar and council-built homes
For a dependable straight swap, UPVC windows and doors on the Selecta Advance 70 system work well, including woodgrain colours. Pair them with a composite front door.
Family homes opening to the garden
Choose Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors for wide glass, or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds for a fully open corner. We also fit conservatories and orangeries, roof lanterns, porches and secondary glazing.
Survey, fabrication and fitting from Fifield
Your surveyor measures each opening and talks through options. We then send a written quote; for a sense of figures beforehand, read our double glazing cost guide. Aluminium frames are made in Fifield, usually from 10 days after order, and our own installers drive up to fit them. Every job carries a 10-year guarantee, and you deal with the same team from start to finish.

Frequently asked questions
Who handles planning for windows in Berkhamsted?
Dacorum Borough Council is the planning authority for Berkhamsted and Northchurch. The Berkhamsted Conservation Area covers around 117 hectares and includes about 61 listed buildings, mostly along the High Street and Castle Street. Check with Dacorum before replacing windows on a listed building or a street-facing elevation inside the boundary.
Can you replace sash windows on a Berkhamsted Victorian villa?
We do not make timber windows, including timber sashes. We can replace sash openings with slim aluminium casements, such as Reynaers SlimLine 68, or UPVC windows with woodgrain finishes. Whether that change is acceptable depends on the house and whether it is in the conservation area, so check with Dacorum Borough Council first.
How far is Berkhamsted from your workshop?
Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor. Berkhamsted is roughly 28 miles away by road, usually around 45 to 50 minutes' drive via the M25 and A41. We do not have a branch in Hertfordshire; our own surveyors and installers make the trip for every visit, and we plan installation days around it.
What does double glazing cost for a Berkhamsted house?
Our aluminium windows start from £400 each, but a full house price depends on the number of windows, their sizes, opening types and colours, and whether doors are included. Larger Victorian openings cost more than small modern ones. We give a written quote after a free survey, and our cost guide explains the main factors.
Do you install bifold or sliding doors in Berkhamsted?
Yes. We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 aluminium sliding doors for wide glass panels, and Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors where you want the opening to fold right back. We will advise which suits your garden, opening width and how you use the space at the survey.
