Double Glazing in Peterborough: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing supplies and fits double glazing in Peterborough, from aluminium windows and sliding doors to UPVC windows, composite front doors and conservatories. We fabricate our aluminium frames ourselves at Fifield, near Windsor, and install with our own team rather than subcontractors. Peterborough is roughly two hours’ drive from the workshop, so we take on work here as planned trips rather than quick call-outs, and we would rather tell you that before you book than after.

A city of very different housing areas

Few places we cover have housing as mixed as Peterborough. The cathedral city was designated a New Town in 1967 to take London overspill, and the townships built after that sit alongside Victorian streets, stone villages and some of the newest estates in the region. The right window for one part of the city can look wrong in another.

Older streets around the centre

Near the city centre and in the older inner suburbs there are Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas, many in brick from a city long known for its Fletton brickworks. Small front bays and shallow reveals are common, and slim aluminium frames or neat UPVC replacements help keep as much glass as possible.

The New Town townships

Bretton, Orton and Paston with Werrington were planned as townships, and housing north of the city often dates from the 1970s and 1980s. Many of these homes are on a second round of windows already, and owners are usually weighing a straightforward UPVC replacement against aluminium for a cleaner, more modern look.

Hampton and the southern estates

Hampton, added as a fourth township south of the city, has houses, townhouses and apartments built in recent decades. Most already have double glazing, so the work here tends to be wider doors onto the garden, a new front door, or an orangery or roof lantern.

The villages

Castor, Ailsworth, Longthorpe and the villages north of the city include stone cottages and farmhouses, some of them listed, where any change to the windows needs care.

Conservation areas and Peterborough City Council

Peterborough City Council is the planning authority and lists 29 conservation areas. Eight are in the city: City Centre, Park, Queens Road, Stanground, Werrington, Orton Longueville, Orton Waterville and the former Great Northern Railway Cottages. The other 21 are villages, including Castor, Barnack, Thorney, Wansford and Eye. Check with the council’s conservation team before replacing windows on a listed building or in one of these areas. Our planning guide covers the general rules, and remember that flats have no householder permitted development rights.

Flat land, the Nene and the Fen edge

The River Nene runs through the city centre, and Peterborough is known as the Gateway to the Fens, with flat, drained land that sits below sea level in places. Homes on open Fen-edge sites take the wind, so careful sealing and well-finished thresholds matter, particularly on large patio and bifold doors.

How a Peterborough job runs from Fifield

We have no office or showroom in Cambridgeshire. Peterborough is about 77 miles from Fifield as the crow flies and roughly 100 miles by road, usually around two hours via the M25 and A1(M). Surveys and installations here are therefore planned in advance and grouped into dedicated days. After the survey, frames are made in our workshop with lead times from 10 days, then our own fitters install them, backed by a 10-year guarantee. The double glazing cost guide explains how a price is built up.

Alongside the city we cover Werrington, Orton, Castor, Eye, Glinton and Thorney. Nearby, we also have pages for Huntingdon, St Neots and Corby.

Frequently asked questions

Do you really cover Peterborough from near Windsor?

Yes, but only as planned work. Peterborough is roughly 100 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, around two hours each way. We do not have a local office, so we book surveys and installations in advance and group them into dedicated days. That keeps the journey practical and means your fitting dates are fixed well ahead.

How do I know if my house is in a Peterborough conservation area?

Peterborough City Council lists 29 conservation areas, including Park, Queens Road, Stanground and Werrington in the city, and villages such as Castor, Thorney and Wansford. The council's website shows the boundaries, and its conservation team can confirm what applies to your address. Check with them before ordering windows for a listed or conservation area home.

Do you make timber windows for village cottages?

No, we do not make timber windows or doors. For stone cottages in villages such as Castor or Ailsworth, we can offer slim aluminium or UPVC in woodgrain finishes, and composite front doors. If your home is listed or the council requires timber, we will say so honestly and you may need a joinery specialist.

Can you replace windows in a 1970s Bretton or Orton house?

Yes. These township homes are a common replacement job. Most owners choose between UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system and aluminium windows such as Reynaers SlimLine 68 for a slimmer frame. At the survey we measure every opening, check the existing frames and reveals, and give you a clear quote for each option.

How much do aluminium windows cost in Peterborough?

Aluminium windows from us begin at £400 per window. The total depends on size, opening style, glass and colour, and on how many windows you replace at once, since larger orders make the journey from Fifield more efficient. A free survey gives you a fixed written quote, and our cost guide explains the main price factors.
