Harpenden homeowners looking for double glazing can come to us for aluminium windows and doors fabricated in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, along with UPVC windows, composite doors, conservatories and secondary glazing. Our own team carries out the survey and the installation. Much of Harpenden’s charm comes from its period streets, so we start every job by looking at what the house was built with and what the council expects.

From farming village to railway town
Harpenden stayed a small village for centuries. The Midland Railway main line arrived in 1868, the Nickey Line to Redbourn and Hemel followed in 1877, and after 1880 farmland was sold off for housing. That gave the town its large late Victorian and Edwardian houses in The Avenues, smaller terraces and semis elsewhere, and later inter-war suburbs. The town spans two valleys, with the River Lea running through Batford in the north-east, and the 238-acre Harpenden Common to the south.
Open space shapes the town centre too. Church Green, Leyton Green and the High Street Greens frame the shops, and Rothamsted Park sits beside the estate where Rothamsted Research has been running field experiments since 1843. Houses that look out over a green or the Common tend to have their best windows facing the view, and those are usually the openings where owners want the slimmest frames and the most glass.
One conservation area, many characters
The Harpenden Conservation Area is unusually large, and St Albans City and District Council’s character statement splits it into more than a dozen areas, each with its own look:
- High Street and Church Green: timber-framed buildings behind later frontages, with painted timber sashes on the west side of the High Street.
- The Avenues and Park Hill: big detached Victorian and Edwardian houses, some with Tudor-revival or Arts and Crafts detail.
- The Poets: the streets named after writers on the east side, where white window frames help tie the street together.
- Highfield Oval: a garden-suburb group from around 1912 to 1913, with cottage-style houses and white sash windows.
- West Common and Bowers Way: inter-war houses in mock Tudor and vernacular revival styles.
- The Common, Hatching Green and Southdown: houses facing open green space.
Materials vary as much as styles: red and orange brick, Luton Grey and yellow stock brick, roughcast, pargetting, tile hanging and half-timbering. The council resists unsympathetic alterations in areas such as Park Hill and The Avenues. If your home is in the conservation area, on the Harpenden local list, or listed, check with St Albans City and District Council before ordering. Our planning guide covers the general rules, and flats have no householder permitted development rights.
Being honest about period windows
We do not make timber or sash windows. Where the street character depends on original timber sashes, we would rather say so than push a product that will not get approval. For many Harpenden homes, though, there is a good fit:
- Edwardian and inter-war casement houses: Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows are outward-opening casements with slim frames, available in white and many other colours.
- Later and post-war houses: UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system, or Cortizo and Alunet aluminium.
- Garden elevations: Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors.
- Front doors: composite doors with woodgrain finishes.
- Listed or highly sensitive homes: secondary glazing, fitted inside without altering the original windows.
- Extensions: conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns.
How we work in Harpenden
Harpenden is about 27 miles from our Fifield workshop in a straight line and roughly 37 miles by road, typically around 50 minutes via the M25 and M1. There is no Inspired Glazing showroom locally; the team travels from Fifield and brings samples to you. At the survey we measure each opening, note the brickwork, render and sill details, and talk through colours. Aluminium frames are then made in our workshop with lead times from 10 days and fitted by our own installers, with a 10-year guarantee. Aluminium windows start from £400, and our cost guide explains how a quote is built up.

Frequently asked questions
Is my Harpenden house in the conservation area?
Quite possibly. The Harpenden Conservation Area covers the High Street, Church Green, The Avenues, The Poets, Highfield Oval, West Common, the Common, Hatching Green and Southdown, among other areas. St Albans City and District Council's mapping service shows the boundary. Check with the council before changing windows if your address falls inside it.
Can you replace sash windows in Harpenden?
We do not make timber or sash windows. If your house has sashes the council wants kept, such as those noted on the High Street and at Highfield Oval, a joinery specialist is the better choice. Secondary glazing is an option we can offer, improving comfort and noise without changing the original windows.
What aluminium windows suit an Edwardian house in The Avenues?
Reynaers SlimLine 68 is our core range. It is an outward-opening casement with slim frames, which suits the proportions of many Edwardian and inter-war casement windows. Colour matters in Harpenden, where white frames often unify a street. If the house is in the conservation area, confirm the approach with the council first.
How far is Harpenden from your workshop?
Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 37 miles from Harpenden by road, usually around 50 minutes via the M25 and M1. We have no local office or showroom. The same team surveys and fits, bringing samples to your home, and installation dates are agreed with you once your frames are in production.
Do you fit bifold doors on inter-war houses near West Common?
Yes. We fit Smart Visofold and Cortizo aluminium bifold doors, and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors where you would prefer larger glass panels. Rear elevations are often less sensitive than fronts, but in a conservation area it is still wise to check with St Albans City and District Council before work starts.
