From plotland bungalows to brick estates
Wickford was a farming village around its church until the railway reached it in 1889, making the town a junction for the Southend and Southminster lines. In the 1920s and 1930s, Londoners bought cheap plots in roads such as Sugden Avenue and Southbourne Grove and put up modest bungalows and chalet-style timber buildings, many used as weekend retreats. Runwell grew the same way. After the Second World War these plots were gradually rebuilt in brick, and later estates filled the gaps.
That history explains why Wickford has so many bungalows and chalet bungalows, often with dormers, alongside post-war semis and newer estates. Bungalows tend to have wide window openings at low level and plenty of rear doors, so they suit large casements, patio doors and conservatories well.
The River Crouch and flood-aware fitting
The River Crouch runs west to east through the town and the River Wick joins it from the south. The 1958 flood left a double-decker bus stranded overnight at Halls Corner, and after another flood in 1960 the river was diverted into a concrete channel through the centre. Those works changed the town, but low-lying streets near the water are still worth treating with care. If your home is in a low-lying part of town, tell us at survey so we can talk through door thresholds and how frames are sealed at the base.
Planning in Wickford
Wickford falls under Basildon Borough Council for planning, with Wickford Town Council, created in 2022, as the local parish tier. The borough’s published conservation areas are in Billericay, the Bursteads and Noak Bridge rather than Wickford, but listed buildings anywhere need consent, and flats have no householder permitted development rights. Check with Basildon Borough Council if you are unsure. Our planning permission guide sets out the general position. Battlesbridge, just to the east, has conservation areas under both Chelmsford City Council and Rochford District Council.
Wickford’s town centre has been the subject of regeneration plans since Basildon Council adopted a masterplan in 2006. If you own one of the flats in or near the centre, remember that leases usually control changes to windows and front doors, so ask the freeholder before getting quotes.
Which products suit Wickford homes
Bungalows and chalet bungalows often benefit most from UPVC windows, which keep costs down across many openings, or from slim aluminium windows such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement and our Cortizo and Alunet ranges.
Rear living rooms and extensions open up with Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding patio doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors. Larger gardens in Runwell often have room for a conservatory, orangery or roof lantern.
Front doors and porches on post-war semis are usually replaced with composite doors, sometimes with a new porch built around them.
We also supply garage doors, fascias, soffits and guttering, blinds and shutters, which can be handy when a bungalow’s roofline needs attention at the same time.

The journey from Fifield and what to expect
We are based solely at Coningsby Farm, Fifield. Wickford is roughly 70 miles away by road via the M25 and A127, around an hour and a half in normal traffic, so surveys and installations are planned in advance around the trip. At the survey we measure every window and door, show samples and explain options. Aluminium is fabricated in our own workshop, UPVC and composite products are ordered to size, and our own fitters install and clear away. Prices are explained in our double glazing cost guide.

Frequently asked questions
Do you replace windows in Wickford bungalows?
Yes, and bungalows are a big part of Wickford's housing because of its plotland history. We fit UPVC and aluminium windows, patio and bifold doors, and conservatories on bungalows and chalet bungalows. Dormer windows and wide low-level openings are measured individually at survey so the new frames fit properly first time.
Is Wickford in a conservation area?
Basildon Borough Council's published conservation areas are Billericay High Street, Great Burstead, Little Burstead and Noak Bridge, so most of Wickford sits outside them. Listed buildings still need consent, and flats lack householder permitted development rights. Nearby Battlesbridge has conservation areas. If in doubt, check with Basildon Borough Council before ordering.
My home is near the River Crouch. Does that change anything?
It may affect door choices. Tell us at survey if your home is low-lying or has flooded before, so we can discuss threshold heights and how frames are sealed at the base. We cannot advise on flood risk itself; the Environment Agency's flood maps and Basildon Borough Council are the right sources for that.
How far is Wickford from your workshop?
Wickford is roughly 70 miles by road from our only base at Fifield, near Windsor, usually around an hour and a half via the M25 and A127. We plan surveys and fitting days in advance around that journey. You deal with the same company throughout, from the first price to the final fitting.
What does a free survey in Wickford involve?
A surveyor visits, measures every window and door you want replaced, brings colour and frame samples, and talks through glass, opening styles and any planning questions. You then receive a written quote. There is no obligation, and you can start by sending photos on WhatsApp to 07934 152 343 for an initial idea of cost.
