Horsham’s mix of old town and suburbs

Horsham is an old market town, and the streets around the Carfax and the Causeway still hold timber-framed, Georgian and Victorian buildings, many with Horsham stone roofs. The railway arrived in the mid-nineteenth century and brought Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas around the station and towards the north of the centre. Through the twentieth century the town spread outwards into Roffey, North Heath, Holbrook and Littlehaven with interwar and post-war housing, and more recently the large developments at Broadbridge Heath and Kilnwood Vale have added thousands of newer homes.

In practice that gives us three quite different conversations. Older town-centre houses are about appearance and proportion. Post-war semis and 1970s and 1980s estates are usually about replacing tired first-generation double glazing. Newer houses rarely need new windows, but often want wider openings into the garden.

Horsham sits on the Wealden clay, and older houses here can show the signs of seasonal ground movement: hairline cracks over openings, sticking casements and reveals that are no longer quite square. None of that rules out new windows, but it is worth checking at survey, because a frame fitted into an out-of-square opening without proper packing will not stay draught-free for long. We measure each opening on all sides for exactly that reason.

Matching the product to the house

Period terraces and villas

Our core window is the Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening aluminium casement with slim sightlines and a choice of colours, which suits Victorian and Edwardian openings well. We also make Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows. We do not make timber windows, so if a like-for-like timber sash is required we will tell you so at the start.

Roffey, North Heath and the post-war estates

For these homes, UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system are the practical choice, and a woodgrain foil softens the look on brick houses. A composite front door completes the job with better security and insulation than an old UPVC panel door.

Broadbridge Heath and newer builds

Here the work tends to be at the back of the house: bifold doors from Smart Visofold or Cortizo, Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliders, or a conservatory, orangery or roof lantern to add light to an extension.

Conservation areas and planning

Horsham District Council is the planning authority. The town has four conservation areas: the Horsham Conservation Area covering the historic centre around the Causeway and Carfax, plus Richmond Road, London Road and Park Terrace Gardens. Warnham, Rusper and Slinfold have conservation areas of their own. If you live in one of these areas, in a listed building or in a flat, check with Horsham District Council before changing windows. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, and leaseholders will normally need the freeholder’s consent too. Our replacement windows planning guide explains the general rules.

Villages and suburbs we travel to

Alongside Horsham itself, we cover Roffey, North Heath, Broadbridge Heath, Southwater, Warnham and Mannings Heath. We also have pages for nearby Horley, Haywards Heath and Shoreham-by-Sea, and a broader Sussex windows and doors page.

How we run a Horsham job

  1. Free survey. We measure each opening, check the condition of the reveals and sills, and talk through glass, colour and handles.
  2. Written quote. Aluminium windows start from £400. The double glazing cost guide covers what affects the figure.
  3. Fabrication in Fifield. We make the aluminium frames ourselves, with lead times from 10 days.
  4. Installation. Our own fitters drive down, take out the old frames, install and seal the new ones and leave the rooms clean.

Every installation is covered by a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and Constructionline Silver accredited.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fit aluminium windows in the Horsham Conservation Area?

Possibly, but it depends on the building and on Horsham District Council. Some properties in the Causeway and Carfax area are listed, and conservation area rules can restrict changes to the front of a house. Check with the council first. We can then supply drawings and specifications for slim Reynaers SlimLine 68 frames if an application is needed.

How long does it take to get new windows fitted in Horsham?

After the survey and your go-ahead, aluminium windows are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days, depending on the order and finish. A typical house is then fitted in one to a few days. Because we travel around an hour each way, we schedule the installation as consecutive days wherever possible.

Do you make timber-look windows for older Horsham houses?

We do not make timber windows or doors. For a timber appearance we offer woodgrain-finish UPVC windows and woodgrain composite doors, and aluminium in a wide range of colours. If your house is listed or in a conservation area where timber is required, check with Horsham District Council and we will tell you honestly if our products are not suitable.

What does double glazing cost for a house in Horsham?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 each, and the total depends on the number and size of openings, glass specification, colour and any doors. UPVC is usually lower. We give a fixed written quote after a free survey; our double glazing cost guide explains the factors that change the price so you can compare quotes fairly.

Do you cover Southwater and Broadbridge Heath as well as Horsham?

Yes. We travel from Fifield to Southwater, Broadbridge Heath, Roffey, North Heath, Warnham and Mannings Heath, as well as Horsham town. Newer homes in Broadbridge Heath and Kilnwood Vale often ask us about bifold or sliding doors rather than windows, and we can survey for both on the same visit.
