Double Glazing in Tower Hamlets: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

If you are pricing double glazing in Tower Hamlets, Inspired Glazing can survey, make and fit aluminium windows and doors, UPVC windows, composite front doors and garden doors anywhere in the borough. We make our aluminium frames in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and our own team fits them. We have no East London branch: the drive from Fifield is roughly 35 miles and usually takes well over an hour, depending on traffic through central London, so we book Tower Hamlets surveys and fitting days ahead.

From weavers’ houses to Docklands towers

Few London boroughs pack so many building types into such a small area. In Spitalfields, most of the houses on Fournier Street date from the 1720s and were taken by master silk weavers and mercers, many of them Huguenots, who worked in the light top floors. A short walk away, the Boundary Estate around Arnold Circus was built by the London County Council on the site of the Old Nichol slum and opened in 1900; it is often called London’s first council estate. Further east, the Lansbury Estate in Poplar began as the “Live Architecture Exhibition” for the 1951 Festival of Britain.

Between these landmarks sit Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Bow, Bethnal Green and Stepney, converted warehouses in Wapping and Limehouse, and the modern apartment blocks of Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs. Window work here ranges from a single house front to a converted warehouse flat.

58 conservation areas, and the flats question

Tower Hamlets Council lists 58 conservation areas. They include Brick Lane and Fournier Street, Elder Street, Tredegar Square, Victoria Park, Driffield Road, Stepney Green, Narrow Street, Wapping Pierhead, the Boundary Estate, Lansbury and Balfron Tower. Each has a character appraisal and management guidelines. Fish Island and White Post Lane, and Three Mills, are handled by the London Legacy Development Corporation instead of the council.

A large share of homes in the borough are flats, and flats do not have householder permitted development rights. Swapping windows in a flat will usually need planning permission from the council, and if you are a leaseholder you will normally need your freeholder’s or managing agent’s consent as well. If your home is in a conservation area, is listed, or is a flat, check with Tower Hamlets Council before you order. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows covers the basics.

Matching the product to the building

For houses with gardens we also build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns, and we supply garage doors, fascias, soffits, guttering, blinds and shutters.

Neighbourhoods we cover

We work across Spitalfields, Whitechapel, Bethnal Green, Bow, Mile End, Stepney, Wapping, Limehouse, Poplar and the Isle of Dogs. Across the borough boundaries, see our pages for Hackney, Newham and Greenwich.

Survey, making and fitting from Fifield

The surveyor comes to you with frame colour, glass and handle samples, because there is no showroom in East London. We ask about parking, lift access and any building management rules before fitting day, as these shape how a Tower Hamlets job runs. Aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide explains what moves a quote up or down. Lead times start from 10 days once the order is placed and any consents are in hand.

Our own installers fit the frames, seal them and take the old units away. Every installation carries a 10-year guarantee. Inspired Glazing is a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and holds Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission to replace windows in my Tower Hamlets flat?

Usually, yes. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so replacing windows in a flat generally needs planning permission from Tower Hamlets Council. Leaseholders normally also need consent from the freeholder or managing agent. We can survey and give you a written specification and drawings to support both applications before anything is ordered.

Can you replace windows in a Docklands warehouse conversion?

Yes, we can survey and quote for warehouse flats in Wapping, Limehouse and elsewhere. Large openings often suit our aluminium windows or Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors. Most of these buildings are run by a freeholder or management company with its own rules, and some are in conservation areas, so consents need to be in place before we fit.

What can I do with original sash windows in a listed house in Spitalfields?

We do not make timber windows, so we are not the firm to replace historic timber sashes. Where the council wants originals kept, our secondary glazing fits inside the existing frames to reduce draughts and noise. Check with Tower Hamlets Council first, as listed building consent may still be needed for some internal work.

How long does it take you to reach Tower Hamlets?

Our team travels from Fifield, near Windsor. Tower Hamlets is roughly 35 miles by road and usually more than an hour's drive, sometimes much longer in central London traffic. We plan survey and fitting days in advance, start early, and confirm parking and access arrangements with you beforehand.

How much does double glazing cost in Tower Hamlets?

Aluminium windows start from £400 each. A full quote depends on the number and size of openings, the frame system, glass options and access, such as working at height in a block. A free survey gives you a fixed written price, and our double glazing cost guide explains the main price factors.
