Double Glazing in Trowbridge: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing supplies and installs double glazing in Trowbridge: aluminium windows and doors fabricated in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, plus UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. Wiltshire’s county town is roughly 80 miles from Fifield by road and the drive usually takes around an hour and three-quarters, so we have no local branch. Our team travels from Fifield, and we plan each survey and installation ahead of time around that journey.

From the “Manchester of the West” to modern estates

Trowbridge grew on wool. By 1820 it had more than 20 cloth factories and was known as the “Manchester of the West”, until the trade declined and the last mill, Salter’s Home Mill, closed in 1982. The legacy is a town centre of stone mills, merchants’ houses and chapels, with six Grade I listed buildings including St James’s Church and Parade House on Fore Street. North of the centre, the Newtown conservation area protects a district of mostly Victorian houses.

The biggest change came after 1951. The population rose by 133 per cent by 2011 as fields and riverside meadows became housing estates, so a large share of Trowbridge homes date from the late 20th century onwards. Many of those houses are now on their second generation of windows, with tired seals, misted units and sticking handles.

Water has always shaped the town. The River Biss runs through Biss Meadows country park, and the Handle House, a rare surviving teasel-drying building from the cloth trade, straddles it. To the north-west, part of the Avon Green Belt keeps open land between Trowbridge and Bradford-on-Avon, so new building has tended to spread east and south instead.

Planning permission and the council

Wiltshire Council, the unitary authority created in 2009 and based at County Hall in Trowbridge, handles planning for the town. Like-for-like window replacements on a house outside a conservation area are often permitted development. If you live in the Newtown conservation area, in a listed building or in a flat, check with Wiltshire Council first. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, and leaseholders will usually need the freeholder’s consent too. See our guide to planning permission for replacement windows.

Areas around Trowbridge

Alongside the town itself we cover Hilperton and Staverton to the north, Studley Green and Lower Studley, and the villages of Southwick, North Bradley, Yarnbrook and West Ashton. For nearby towns, see Westbury, Melksham and Bath.

What happens after you get in touch

The first step is a free survey at your home. We measure each opening, look at the condition of the reveals and sills, and show you frame colours and glass samples. You then get a written quote: aluminium windows start from Β£400, and our guide to double glazing costs explains what affects a whole-house price.

Once you order, aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days. Because Trowbridge is a long drive for us, we fix the installation date with you well ahead and arrive with everything needed to finish in as few visits as possible. Our own fitters remove the old frames, fit and seal the new ones and clear the waste. Each installation carries a 10-year guarantee, and we are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Trowbridge house in a conservation area?

The Newtown conservation area covers a district of mostly Victorian houses, and parts of the historic centre have many listed buildings. The quickest way to be sure is to check with Wiltshire Council's planning team or its online maps before ordering. We can point out what we know at survey, but the council has the final word.

How far do you travel to Trowbridge?

Our workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, is roughly 80 miles from Trowbridge by road, usually around an hour and three-quarters. We have no office in Wiltshire, so surveys and installations are planned in advance, and our own surveyor and fitters make the journey rather than subcontractors.

Can you replace old UPVC windows on a 1980s estate house?

Yes. We can fit new UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system, or upgrade to aluminium if you want slimmer frames and darker colours. We remove the old frames, make good the reveals, fit the new windows and seal them, and take all the waste away at the end of the job.

Do you make sash windows for Victorian houses?

We do not make timber windows. Our aluminium range is led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, with Cortizo and Alunet options. If your Newtown home needs timber sashes to satisfy the council, we will tell you honestly, and secondary glazing can be an alternative that leaves the original windows in place.

What guarantee comes with your windows?

Every installation we carry out comes with a 10-year guarantee. We make the aluminium frames in our own Fifield workshop and fit them with our own team, so the people responsible for the guarantee are the same ones who built and installed your windows and doors.
