Double Glazing in Bath: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing offers double glazing in Bath through aluminium windows and doors we fabricate ourselves at our workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, along with UPVC windows, composite doors, conservatories and secondary glazing. We should be clear from the start: we have no office in Bath. The city is roughly 85 miles from Fifield by road along the M4, usually around an hour and three-quarters, so our team travels out for surveys and installations that are planned well in advance.

Glazing in a World Heritage city

Bath is unlike anywhere else we work. The whole city was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and in 2021 it became part of a second one, the Great Spa Towns of Europe. Most of its buildings are made from golden Bath stone, much of it quarried from mines on Combe Down and Bathampton Down, and its Georgian set pieces, from the Royal Crescent and The Circus to Pulteney Bridge, are known worldwide.

Bath and North East Somerset Council has published conservation area character appraisals for eleven parts of the city, including the City Centre, Bathwick, Widcombe and the Kennet and Avon Canal, Combe Down, Bear Flat and Oldfield Park, and Twerton, Whiteway, Southdown and Moorlands. In other words, many Bath addresses sit within a conservation area, and many buildings are listed.

That is only part of the picture. After the Bath Blitz of 1942, and as Combe Down, Twerton and Weston were brought into the city in the 1950s, large areas of council and post-war housing were built. Those homes, and later developments on the city’s edges, are where ordinary window replacement is most straightforward.

Stone buildings also bring practical points for the survey. Bath stone reveals and sills can be soft or worn, so we look at how old frames are fixed and how new ones will be sealed against the stone without damaging it.

Being honest about what suits which Bath home

Listed Georgian and Regency buildings

We do not make timber windows or replica timber sashes. If your home is listed, new windows will need listed building consent and the council will usually expect the original character to be kept. In that situation our most useful product is often secondary glazing, fitted inside the existing windows to reduce draughts and noise without altering the historic frames.

Unlisted homes in conservation areas

Here the rules depend on the property, so we always suggest you check with Bath and North East Somerset Council before ordering. Where aluminium is acceptable, the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement and Cortizo and Alunet systems in our aluminium windows range offer slim frames and a wide colour choice. Rear elevations that are not visible from the street can sometimes take Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors.

Post-war and modern houses

In parts of Weston, Twerton, Southdown and on newer estates, UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system and composite front doors are practical, lower-maintenance choices. We also build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns, and supply garage doors, rooflines, blinds and shutters.

Permissions and flats

Bath has no city council of its own; planning is handled by Bath and North East Somerset Council. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so changing windows in a flat normally needs planning permission as well as consent from the freeholder or management company. Read our guide to planning permission for replacement windows, then check with the council about your address.

How a Bath job works from Fifield

We begin with a free survey. Our surveyor measures each opening, notes stonework, access and parking, and talks you through frames, glass and finishes. You then get a written quote: aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide explains what affects the total. Aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days, and installation is booked on a date that works for the long drive. Our own fitters do the work and take the waste away. All installations carry a 10-year guarantee, and we are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner with Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put double glazing in a listed building in Bath?

Only with listed building consent from Bath and North East Somerset Council, and consent for new frames on a listed Georgian house is far from guaranteed. We do not make timber sash windows. Secondary glazing, fitted inside the existing windows, is often the practical way to improve comfort while keeping the historic frames untouched.

Does the World Heritage Site status stop me changing my windows?

Not on its own, but it adds to the importance the council places on the city's character. Whether you need permission depends mainly on whether your home is listed, in a conservation area or a flat. Check with Bath and North East Somerset Council about your address before you order anything.

Do you have a showroom in Bath?

No. Our only premises are our workshop and office in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 85 miles from Bath by road and around an hour and three-quarters away. We bring frame samples, colour charts and glass options to your home, and we plan surveys and installation days in advance around the journey.

I live in a flat in Bath. Can I replace my windows?

Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so replacement windows usually need planning permission from the council, and in a listed building, listed building consent as well. You will also need agreement from your freeholder or management company. Once you have that, we are happy to survey and quote.

How much does aluminium double glazing cost in Bath?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window. The final price depends on size, style, glass, colour and how many openings are involved, and we confirm it in a written quote after a free survey. Our double glazing cost guide explains what makes the biggest difference to a whole-house price.
