From strawberry fields to Grange Park
Hedge End began as a hamlet on Botley Common and, in the late 19th century, was a strawberry-growing area that sent fruit to London and Scotland from Botley station. The population was only about 1,000 in the 1950s. Everything changed after the M27 opened: office parks, superstores and housing followed, and the population reached nearly 18,000 by 2001 and over 20,000 by 2011. Grange Park, north and east of the centre, was the largest recent development, followed by Kings Copse, Cranbourne Park and the homes at Dowd’s Farm.
The M27, with junctions 7 and 8 on the edge of town, is both the reason for that growth and a source of traffic noise for homes nearest to it, something worth raising at survey if it affects you.
That makes Hedge End one of the newest towns we cover. Most of its houses date from the 1980s onward, and the windows fitted by developers in that era are now reaching the age where seals fail, units mist and hinges wear out.
Planning and conservation
Hedge End is in the Borough of Eastleigh, so Eastleigh Borough Council deals with planning. The town has no conservation area of its own, but neighbouring Botley and Old Bursledon do, as do Hamble-le-Rice and Netley Abbey a little further away. For most Hedge End houses, like-for-like window replacement is straightforward, but if your home is in one of those areas, listed, or a flat, check with the council first. Flats have no householder permitted development rights. Our planning permission page covers the common questions.
Good matches for Hedge End houses
Replacing first-generation UPVC
Most homes here already have double glazing, just older double glazing. A straight swap to modern UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system improves warmth and security without changing the look of the estate.
Going slimmer with aluminium
If you want a sharper, more modern finish, our aluminium windows, led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement and also available in Cortizo and Alunet, give thinner frames and a wide colour choice. They start from £400 a window.
Doors
A composite front door is a robust choice for a family house. Through the back, aluminium bifolds from Smart Visofold or Cortizo or Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors replace the narrow French or patio doors that many 1980s and 1990s houses were built with.
More living space
Detached and semi-detached houses on Grange Park and similar estates often have space for a conservatory or orangery. We also fit roof lanterns, porches, and fascias, soffits and guttering.
Botley, just east, is a different proposition. It was a well-established village long before the motorway arrived, and its centre is now a conservation area, so homes there call for more thought about how replacement windows look from the street. West End and Bursledon sit in between, with a mix of older cottages and modern estates.
Covering Hedge End and its neighbours

Frequently asked questions
My Hedge End house already has double glazing. Is it worth replacing?
It can be, if the units have misted, the seals have perished or the hardware is failing, which is common in windows fitted in the 1980s and 1990s. Modern frames and glass are warmer and more secure. At the free survey we will tell you honestly whether full replacement, or just new doors, makes sense for your house.
Do I need planning permission for new windows in Hedge End?
For most houses, replacing windows like for like needs no planning application. Hedge End has no conservation area of its own, but Botley and Old Bursledon nearby do, and listed buildings and flats have extra controls. Eastleigh Borough Council is the planning authority, so check with them if any of those apply to your home.
How far away are you from Hedge End?
Our workshop is at Coningsby Farm in Fifield, near Windsor, about 60 miles from Hedge End by road, generally an hour and a quarter or so via the M3 and M27. We have no branch in Hampshire. Our own team travels for each survey and installation, and we book those dates well in advance.
Can you replace old French doors with bifolds?
Yes. Swapping narrow French or patio doors for wider bifold or sliding doors is a common way to open up a back room. We fit Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors. If the opening needs widening, a new lintel and possibly building control approval will be needed, and we will explain this at survey.
Do you guarantee your work in Hedge End?
Yes. Every installation we carry out, wherever it is, comes with our 10-year guarantee. Because we make our own aluminium windows and use our own fitters rather than subcontractors, one company is responsible for the product and the installation. If anything needs attention, you deal directly with us at Fifield.
