Double Glazing in Devizes: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing provides double glazing in Devizes using aluminium windows and doors from our own workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, alongside UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. One team surveys and fits. The trip from Fifield is roughly 70 miles and usually takes around an hour and a half, and there is no branch in Devizes. We plan visits ahead and fit over consecutive days to make each journey count.

A town with more than 500 listed buildings

Devizes has a lot of listed buildings for a town of its size, more than 500 in all. Its conservation area was designated in 1970. It covers about 45 hectares and contains roughly 295 listed buildings, from Grade I houses on the Market Place, such as the early 18th-century No. 17, to hundreds of Grade II buildings. The Market Cross was rebuilt in 1814 to a design by James Wyatt. A second conservation area, the Devizes Victoria Road Quarter is a separate designation.

For window replacement, this means more homes in Devizes than in most market towns need permission first. If your house is listed, or inside either conservation area, check with Wiltshire Council’s planning team before ordering. Listed building consent is separate from planning permission and can apply to inside work too. Secondary glazing is often the practical answer for a listed sash or casement.

Canal, downs and growing edges

The Kennet and Avon Canal climbs 237 feet near the town through 29 locks, 16 of them in the straight flight at Caen Hill. Built between 1794 and 1810, it declined once the railways arrived in the 1840s and was restored between 1970 and 2003. The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust now runs a museum at The Wharf, and the Devizes to Westminster canoe race starts here each year. To the east, the North Wessex Downs National Landscape reaches as far as Devizes. North of the centre, about 1,200 houses in the built-up area fall within Bishops Cannings parish, and the former Roundway parish was merged in 2017. Not every Devizes address is as historic as the Market Place, then, and many homes have no special restrictions.

What we would suggest for Devizes houses

Period homes, where replacement is allowed

Our aluminium windows are led by the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, with Cortizo and Alunet as alternatives, from £400 a window. Slim frames help keep the proportions of older openings. Where the council expects a timber look, we can discuss woodgrain-finish options. We do not make timber windows.

Twentieth-century and newer homes

UPVC windows in the Selecta Advance 70 system offer good value. A composite door replaces a tired front door. For gardens, we fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold doors.

Adding space

Conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns are all available. In a conservation area, these more often need planning permission. Read our planning guide first.

Survey, quote, make, fit

A free survey comes first, with measurements, photographs and a conversation about what you want. You then receive a written quote. Our cost guide covers what changes the price. Aluminium frames are fabricated in Fifield with lead times from 10 days, and installation is booked in a block. Everything we fit is covered by a 10-year guarantee.

Alongside Devizes itself, we cover Rowde, Potterne, Bishops Cannings, Roundway, Urchfont and Poulshot. Nearby, see Melksham, Calne and Trowbridge.

Getting the details right in a historic town

On a house that sits in a row of listed neighbours, small things matter: how thick the frame looks from the street, where the opening sashes or casements fall, and whether glazing bars line up with the building next door. When an application to Wiltshire Council is needed, we can supply drawings and product details for you or your agent to submit. We will not tell you an application will succeed. That is the council’s decision. But we will give you the information it is likely to ask for.

We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and have Constructionline Silver accreditation. Because we fabricate in our own workshop, we can make aluminium frames to suit individual openings in older Devizes houses, which are rarely standard sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Why do so many Devizes homes need permission for new windows?

Devizes has more than 500 listed buildings, and its conservation area alone contains about 295. Listed homes need listed building consent for window changes. In conservation areas, the council looks closely at the appearance of new windows. Check with Wiltshire Council before you order. We can provide drawings and specifications to support an application.

Is the Victoria Road area of Devizes a conservation area?

Yes. Devizes Victoria Road Quarter is listed as its own conservation area on the national register, separate from the main Devizes conservation area designated in 1970. If you live in or near it, ask Wiltshire Council's planning team what applies to your property before you change windows or doors.

Can I have aluminium windows in a listed Devizes house?

Possibly, but only with listed building consent from Wiltshire Council, and consent for replacing historic windows is often refused. Where replacement is not allowed, secondary glazing fitted inside the original window can improve warmth and cut noise while leaving the historic frames in place. We can advise on the options at survey.

Do you cover villages around Devizes?

Yes. As well as the town, we cover Rowde, Potterne, Bishops Cannings, Roundway, Urchfont and Poulshot. Several of these villages have conservation areas of their own on the national register, including Potterne, Bishops Cannings, Urchfont and Poulshot, so the same check with Wiltshire Council applies there.

How long until my windows are fitted?

Aluminium lead times start from 10 days after you place your order, because we make the frames in our own Fifield workshop. If listed building consent or planning permission is needed, that comes first and adds time. Once the frames are ready, we book fitting days in advance because of the journey from Fifield.
