Aluminium Bifold Doors in Shiplake

Inspired Glazing makes and installs aluminium bifold doors in Shiplake, using Smart Systems Visofold and Cortizo folding systems fabricated at our workshop in Fifield, about 25 to 30 minutes away by road through Maidenhead and Henley. For a large detached house in Lower Shiplake, a family home near Shiplake Cross or a property running down to the Thames, a bifold lets you fold an entire garden wall away and join the kitchen or living room to the terrace. Our lead times start from 10 days, our own fitters carry out the installation, and the work is backed by a 10-year guarantee.

Aluminium bifold doors opening onto a garden โ€“ Shiplake

Shiplake homes and the case for folding doors

Shiplake parish sits about two miles south of Henley-on-Thames, with the river forming its eastern and southern edges. Most of its houses were built or rebuilt after the railway arrived, and the parish now mixes substantial detached houses on generous plots, older listed buildings around the church and Shiplake College, and newer homes close to the station in Lower Shiplake.

Many of these houses have wide rear elevations and gardens that are used heavily in summer, which is where a bifold makes most sense. When every panel is folded back, the opening is close to the full structural width, so a kitchen extension or garden room becomes part of the terrace. Bifolds are also a practical answer to a cranked or L-shaped rear wall, as the narrow sashes can be planned around changes of direction.

Two folding systems, two sets of strengths

For most openings we propose either Visofold 1000 or Cortizo. Visofold sashes go up to 1,200mm wide and 2,500mm high, the typical sightline is 122mm, and the frames can be dual colour, so a dark exterior can sit with a lighter interior. The standard roller carries PAS 24 approval, and a low threshold option helps where the terrace meets the floor level. Our Smart Systems page explains the range in more detail.

The Cortizo folding door takes leaves up to 3,000mm tall and 120kg, which suits extensions with higher ceilings or a vaulted garden room. It opens inward or outward, can run up to seven sashes each way, and can turn an open 90-degree corner without a post, a good fit for a corner that faces both the garden and the river. See our Cortizo aluminium systems page, or weigh the two in our Visofold and Cortizo comparison. Our main bifold doors page covers configurations and glazing.

Planning in South Oxfordshire

Shiplake falls under South Oxfordshire District Council. A rear extension or a new opening on an ordinary detached house may come under permitted development, but listed buildings, homes in a conservation area and houses where earlier permissions removed those rights are different. Check with South Oxfordshire District Council before you order, and ask whether your property is listed, as Shiplake has numerous Grade II buildings. Our article on planning permission for replacement windows sets out the usual questions to ask.

On a plot close to the river, your architect may also need to consider flood risk when setting floor levels, because that decision affects the threshold detail on the new doors.

Survey and installation from Fifield

Shiplake is one of the closer areas we serve, under nine miles from the workshop in a straight line. The team travels from Fifield to measure, returns with the finished doors, and fits them without subcontracting. Driveways and wide plots usually make deliveries straightforward, though private lanes near the river can be narrow, so we confirm vehicle access when we visit.

Choices to make before we fabricate

Thinking about a slider for the river view?

Where the priority is an uninterrupted outlook over a long garden or the Thames, a sliding door with larger panes may be a better choice. Our guide to bifold vs sliding doors compares the two, and you can read about aluminium sliding doors in Shiplake. We also fit bifolds in Winkfield, Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Inspired Glazing from Shiplake?

Our workshop at Coningsby Farm in Fifield is under nine miles from Shiplake in a straight line, and the drive through Maidenhead and Henley usually takes 25 to 30 minutes. The same team surveys the opening, fabricates the doors in Fifield and returns to install them, so you deal with one company throughout the job.

Do I need planning permission for bifold doors in Shiplake?

It depends on the house. Many rear changes on unlisted detached homes fall under permitted development, but listed buildings, conservation areas and properties with restricted rights need consent. Shiplake has numerous Grade II listed buildings, so check with South Oxfordshire District Council before ordering. We can share system details for any application.

Which bifold system suits a tall garden room?

For openings above 2,500mm, the Cortizo folding door is usually the choice, as it takes leaves up to 3,000mm high and 120kg each. Visofold 1000 suits openings up to 2,500mm high and offers dual-colour frames and a low threshold. We measure the structural opening first and then recommend one system for it.

Can bifold doors meet at a corner of the house?

Yes, with the Cortizo folding system, which can form a 90-degree open corner without a post. When both sets of panels are folded back, the corner of the room opens completely onto the garden. It needs a properly designed structural support above, so we coordinate with your architect or engineer before fabrication begins.

Are bifold doors suitable for a house near the Thames?

They can be, provided the threshold and drainage are detailed for an exposed position. A weathered threshold suits an elevation open to wind-driven rain, and floor levels may be set with flood risk in mind. Where the main aim is a wide, uninterrupted view of the river, a sliding door can be the better choice.
