Beaconsfield’s houses and folding doors
Beaconsfield has two distinct parts. The Old Town dates back to medieval times and has many listed buildings and distinctive Arts and Crafts architecture around it. The New Town grew after the railway arrived in 1905, with the Gregories and Wilton Park estates. Buckinghamshire Council identifies Areas of Special Character such as Gregories Road to Burkes Road, with large individually designed houses on big plots among mature trees, and Penn Road and Ledborough Lane, with large detached and semi-detached houses in substantial gardens.
Many of these houses have been extended at the back with family kitchens and garden rooms. A bifold suits them when you want the room to open fully onto a large garden, or where the extension wraps round a corner. For an overview of how bifolds work, see our aluminium bifold doors page.
Choosing a bifold system
Smart Visofold 1000
Visofold 1000 takes sashes up to 1,200 mm wide and 2,500 mm high, according to Smart Systems, with a 122 mm sightline and a 1.4 W/mยฒK U-value. It can have a low threshold, PAS 24 approved roller and top guide, and different colours inside and out. Our Smart Systems windows and bifolds page has more.
Cortizo
Cortizo publishes sashes up to 3,000 mm high, 1,200 mm wide and 120 kg, in sets of up to 14 sashes. Glazing ranges from 25 to 45 mm, Uw from 1.1 W/mยฒK, with PAS 24:2012 certification and a 90-degree open corner without a post. It is our usual choice for vaulted garden rooms. Read more on our Cortizo aluminium range page, and compare the two in Visofold or Cortizo: which bifold?
Conservation areas and Buckinghamshire Council
Beaconsfield is in Buckinghamshire Council’s area. The Beaconsfield Old Town Conservation Area contains most of the town’s listed buildings, and Hampden Hill was designated a conservation area in 2005. Areas of Special Character are a local policy, so design quality on rear extensions in those roads may be looked at closely. Check with Buckinghamshire Council before ordering, and read our guide to planning for doors and windows.
Close to our workshop
Beaconsfield is about 8 miles from Fifield, normally 20 to 30 minutes by car. We travel from Fifield to survey and to install, which makes it easy to return for a check visit or a quick adjustment. Lead time is from 10 days once drawings are signed off.
Because the frames are made in our own workshop, your builder can talk to us directly about the opening size, steel and floor levels.
Bifold or sliding door?
A bifold clears almost the full width; a slider gives larger panes but opens only part of the way. See our bifold vs slider guide, or look at sliding doors in Beaconsfield.
Panels, stacking and the garden
Most Beaconsfield gardens are big enough for the panel stack to fold outwards onto the terrace, which keeps the kitchen floor clear. Odd numbers of panels allow a traffic door, so you can step out without folding the set. Panels can stack to the left, the right, or split both ways, and we think about which side catches the evening sun, where the dining table will stand and how the doors line up with paths and lawns.
We also look at glass. Laminated panes add security, and solar control coatings help on south or west-facing elevations. If the house has older windows that will stay, we can advise on colours that suit them, or quote for matching aluminium windows so the rear of the house is consistent.

Frequently asked questions
Do Areas of Special Character affect bifold doors in Beaconsfield?
Areas of Special Character such as Gregories Road to Burkes Road and Penn Road to Ledborough Lane are a local planning designation. They do not make every change need permission, but design quality on extensions may be judged more closely there. Check with Buckinghamshire Council about your house before you commit to a design.
Which bifold system suits a vaulted garden room?
Cortizo is usually the better fit, as it publishes sash heights up to 3,000 mm and sash weights up to 120 kg. Visofold 1000 goes to 2,500 mm high. For a vaulted room, fixed glazing above the doors can fill the gable. We confirm the limits for your glass and layout at survey.
How quickly can you start in Beaconsfield?
We are about 20 to 30 minutes away in Fifield, so surveys are easy to arrange. Lead times are from 10 days once drawings are signed off, and the actual date depends on the project and your builder's programme. We agree a fitting date that suits the stage of the build.
What is a traffic door on a bifold?
A traffic door is a single sash that opens like a normal hinged door, so you can step into the garden without folding the whole set. It usually needs an odd number of panels. It is useful in winter or for letting pets out, and we can place it at either end of the set.
Can you supply matching aluminium windows?
Yes. We make aluminium windows in our Fifield workshop as well as doors, so frames, colours and sightlines can be matched across the rear of the house. Ask us at survey and we will include windows in your quotation. Smart Systems and Cortizo both offer window ranges that pair with their bifolds.
