Aluminium Bifold Doors in Primrose Hill

Inspired Glazing supplies and fits aluminium bifold doors in Primrose Hill, fabricating Smart Systems Visofold and Cortizo folding systems in our Fifield workshop and installing them with our own team. In a Primrose Hill terrace or villa, the usual place for a bifold is a single-storey rear extension or a lower-ground room opening onto the garden, where folding the panels away turns the back of the house into one space with the lawn. Lead times start from 10 days, and each job carries a 10-year guarantee.

Aluminium bifold doors opening onto a garden โ€“ Primrose Hill

Primrose Hill houses and their garden elevations

The area grew from the 1840s, when land was sold for villas and terraces, and much of what survives is Italianate: yellow stock brick with stucco ground floors, window surrounds and cornices, often four storeys over a basement. Regent’s Park Terrace is a typical long terrace of the period, and there are semi-detached pairs and later modernist houses such as those at Elliott Square.

The fronts of these houses are protected, and the rear elevations are often just as consistent along a terrace. That makes the rear ground floor or basement the natural place for change, and a well-proportioned folding door within a modest extension is a common way to open a narrow, deep plot to its garden.

What Camden’s guidance means for a bifold

Primrose Hill is covered by the Primrose Hill Conservation Area, managed by Camden Council. Its conservation area statement asks that rear extensions are as unobtrusive as possible and, in most cases, no more than one storey, and it says extensions are not acceptable where they would spoil the uniform rear elevation of an unspoilt terrace. Check with Camden Council early, particularly if the house is listed, as many in the area are. Our explainer on planning permission for replacement windows is a useful starting point.

In a house converted into flats, the freeholder or managing agent will normally need to approve a new opening, and the lease may say who owns the rear wall and garden.

Visofold or Cortizo in a narrow plot

Primrose Hill plots are often narrow, so the width of each sash matters. Visofold 1000 sashes go up to 1,200mm wide and 2,500mm high, with typical sightlines of 122mm, a PAS 24 approved standard roller, a low threshold option and dual-colour frames. A heritage sash profile is also part of the range, which some owners prefer beside period brickwork. More on our Smart Systems bifold doors page.

The Cortizo folding door suits taller extensions, taking leaves up to 3,000mm high and 120kg, and opening inward or outward. It holds a PAS 24:2012 certificate. Our Cortizo windows and doors page has the range, and the Smart Visofold vs Cortizo article compares them directly. Our aluminium bifold door overview covers glass, hardware and layout options.

Parking and access in NW1

The team travels from Fifield to survey and install, usually an hour to an hour and a quarter by road. Camden streets are controlled parking, so we book a parking bay suspension for delivery days. Camden recommends booking at least 17 days before the start date to avoid a short notice charge, and it lists construction among the accepted purposes, so we apply as soon as the installation date is fixed.

In a terraced house there is rarely side access, which means frames and glass come through the front door, along the hall and often down to the basement. We measure that route at survey, as it can decide the maximum panel size more than the opening does.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit bifold doors to the back of a Primrose Hill terrace?

Often yes, usually within a single-storey rear extension or at lower-ground level. The Primrose Hill Conservation Area statement asks that rear extensions are unobtrusive and generally no more than one storey, and it resists extensions that would spoil a uniform rear elevation. Check with Camden Council, and allow for listed building consent if the house is listed.

How do you deliver to a terraced house in Camden?

We book a parking bay suspension with Camden for delivery and installation days, ideally at least 17 days ahead to avoid the short notice charge. Frames and glass are then carried through the house. At survey we measure doors, halls and stairs so the panels are sized to fit the route as well as the opening.

What is the best bifold for a narrow Primrose Hill garden?

On a narrow opening, a three- or four-panel Visofold 1000 is often the neatest choice, with sashes up to 1,200mm wide and 2,500mm high. If the extension is taller, the Cortizo folding door takes leaves up to 3,000mm high. Stacking the panels against a party wall keeps the centre of the view clear.

Can I fit bifold doors to my flat in a converted house?

You will normally need the freeholder's or managing agent's approval, and your lease may set out who owns the rear wall and the garden. Planning permission from Camden is likely to be required for a new or enlarged opening. Once you know where you stand, we can survey and advise on sizes and systems.

Do Visofold bifolds come in a period-style profile?

The Visofold 1000 range includes a heritage sash profile alongside the standard sash, which some owners prefer next to stock brick and stucco. Frames can also be dual colour, so the outside and inside can differ. Ask us at survey which profile suits the proportions of your rear elevation.
