Aluminium Sliding Doors in Primrose Hill

Inspired Glazing installs aluminium sliding doors in Primrose Hill based on Reynaers ConceptPatio 130, made to measure in our Fifield workshop and fitted by our own crew. In a stucco-detailed terrace or a semi-detached villa, a slider at the back of a single-storey extension gives the room wide glass and a slim meeting line, keeping the garden in view even on grey days. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner, with lead times from 10 days and a 10-year guarantee on our work.

Reynaers aluminium sliding patio doors โ€“ Primrose Hill

Slim frames for Victorian garden elevations

Primrose Hill was developed from the 1840s, and many of its houses are Italianate terraces in yellow stock brick with stucco detailing, typically four storeys above a basement. Plots are long and narrow, and the garden is usually reached from a raised ground floor or a lower-ground room.

A sliding door works well in this setting because it puts the most glass into a limited width. Two or three large vents can fill the back of a modest extension, and with only a narrow meeting section between them, the effect is closer to a glazed wall than a set of doors. When the house is part of a consistent terrace, a quiet, well-proportioned slider is also easier to fit into Camden’s guidance than a busier arrangement of frames.

The ConceptPatio 130 specification

ConceptPatio 130 is available as a lift-and-slide and as a standard slider. Vents can be up to 2,700mm wide and high and weigh up to 300kg, and the High Insulation version reaches Uw 1.4 W/mยฒK with 1.0 W/mยฒK glass. Reynaers rates the system RC2 for burglar resistance, and the slider version is also listed to PAS 24. The lift-and-slide carries an acoustic rating of Rw 40 dB.

A Slim Chicane option reduces the visible meeting profile further, and low, zero and renovation thresholds are available. For the full picture, see our Reynaers sliding door page and the Reynaers windows and sliding doors section. We fabricate Cortizo sliding systems too, covered on our Cortizo aluminium page.

Camden, the conservation area and freeholders

Camden Council is the planning authority, and Primrose Hill lies within the Primrose Hill Conservation Area. The conservation area statement expects rear extensions to be as unobtrusive as possible and generally single storey, and it resists extensions that would spoil a uniform rear elevation along an unspoilt terrace. Check with Camden Council before committing to a design, and expect listed building consent to be needed if your house is listed. Our guide to planning permission for windows and doors explains the basics.

If your home is a garden flat in a converted house, the freeholder or managing agent will usually have to agree to the alteration, and it is worth confirming early who owns the rear wall.

Bringing heavy glass into an NW1 terrace

Our team drives in from Fifield, which typically takes an hour to an hour and a quarter. Large sliding vents are heavy, and terraced houses rarely have side access, so at survey we measure the front door, hall and any stairs to the lower ground floor. Those dimensions can limit the vent size as much as the opening itself.

Camden is controlled parking, so we arrange a parking bay suspension for delivery. The council advises booking at least 17 days ahead to avoid a short notice charge, and suspensions for construction are permitted, so we book as soon as dates are agreed.

Step-free access to the garden

Many lower-ground rooms in Primrose Hill sit close to garden level, and the ConceptPatio 130 zero threshold lets the internal floor run straight out to the patio with the rails recessed. Drainage outside needs careful detailing for this to work, so we discuss levels with you and your builder before confirming the threshold.

A folding alternative

If opening the full width matters more than the size of each pane, look at our Primrose Hill bifold doors page and our bifold or sliding guide. We also install sliding doors in Swiss Cottage, St John’s Wood and Hampstead.

Frequently asked questions

Will Camden allow sliding doors on my Primrose Hill extension?

Consent is possible, but Camden judges each application on its own merits. The conservation area statement favours unobtrusive, generally single-storey rear extensions and resists those that would spoil a uniform terrace elevation. Check with Camden Council before finalising the design, and add listed building consent to your plans if the house is listed.

How wide can a sliding door be in a narrow terrace?

A single ConceptPatio 130 vent can be up to 2,700mm wide, so a two-vent door can span most terrace extensions. The real limit is often the route through the house, because heavy glass has to pass through the front door, hall and stairs. We measure all of these at survey before confirming vent sizes.

Can I have a level threshold from my kitchen to the garden?

Yes, ConceptPatio 130 offers a zero threshold with the rails set into the floor, so the kitchen floor and patio can meet at the same level. It relies on good external drainage, particularly on a lower-ground patio that collects water. We agree the levels with you and your builder before specifying it.

Do you handle parking for installation in Primrose Hill?

Yes. We arrange a parking bay suspension with Camden for the days we need to unload. Camden suggests booking at least 17 days before the start date to avoid a short notice charge, so we apply as soon as the installation date is set. Our team then travels from Fifield on the day.

What security rating do your sliding doors have?

Reynaers rates ConceptPatio 130 to RC2 for burglar resistance, and its slider version is also listed to PAS 24. Actual performance depends on the configuration, hardware and glass chosen, so we confirm the specification for your opening. Laminated glass is often a sensible choice on a ground-floor or lower-ground garden elevation.
