Aluminium bifold doors opening onto a garden โ€“ St John's Wood

Villas, terraces and generous gardens in NW8

St John’s Wood was one of London’s early villa suburbs. Westminster City Council describes its early 19th-century villas as stuccoed, with simple classical detailing and broad overhanging eaves, and streets such as Acacia Road and Hamilton Terrace mix detached and semi-detached villas with listed terraces from around 1830. Most of the area sits within the St John’s Wood Conservation Area. Behind these houses are some of the largest private gardens in inner London, and many owners have added rear extensions at lower-ground and ground floor to connect the kitchen to the lawn.

A bifold suits these extensions when the goal is opening the full width onto a terrace for entertaining. On a semi-detached villa, where the extension runs to the party wall on one side and steps back on the other, a cranked layout lets the doors turn a corner and still fold away.

Visofold 1000 and Cortizo compared

Both systems are fabricated by us and both have published performance figures:

For taller openings in a raised ground-floor room, Cortizo’s 3000 mm sash height gives more headroom. For a classic garden room at standard height, Visofold is often the simpler choice. Our Smart Visofold vs Cortizo bifold doors article goes further, and there is product background on our Smart Systems bifold doors and Cortizo aluminium systems pages.

Planning in the St John’s Wood Conservation Area

Westminster’s policies ask that rear extensions stay subordinate to the host villa and reflect its scale and detailing, and basement proposals are assessed against specific limits on garden coverage and depth. Window and door details on approved schemes are often secured by condition. Check with Westminster City Council before committing to an opening size, and read our guide to planning permission for replacement windows for the basics.

Some houses in the area are held on long leases or divided into flats, in which case the freeholder or managing agent will usually need to approve external changes. Residents’ parking controls apply across most streets, so a parking bay suspension for delivery day can save time.

Choosing between folding and sliding

Where the garden is long and the view runs down a lawn to mature trees, many St John’s Wood owners prefer the wide panes of a slider, which you can read about on our aluminium sliding doors in St John’s Wood page. Where the terrace is used for parties and you want the room fully open, a bifold is hard to beat. Bifold vs sliding doors sets out the differences.

What working with us looks like

We measure, draw, fabricate and fit, so there is one point of contact from survey to handover. Architects can send drawings for comment before tender, and main contractors can schedule us against a programme because manufacture happens in our own workshop. We hold Constructionline Silver and fit with our own team.

We also cover Swiss Cottage, Primrose Hill and Marylebone, and our main aluminium bifold doors page shows the full range.

Frequently asked questions

Will Westminster allow bifold doors on my St John's Wood villa?

It depends on the house and the scale of change. The St John's Wood Conservation Area covers most of the neighbourhood, and Westminster expects rear extensions to stay subordinate to the villa. A like-for-like opening may be simpler than a new one. Check with Westminster City Council early, and we can provide drawings for any submission.

Which bifold system gives the tallest panels?

Of the two systems we fabricate, Cortizo Bi-Fold allows sashes up to 3000 mm high and 1200 mm wide, at up to 120 kg each. Visofold 1000 sashes go up to 2500 mm high. For a raised ground-floor room with high ceilings, Cortizo usually suits better, but we confirm options after measuring your opening.

Can bifold doors be a different colour inside and outside?

Yes, with Visofold 1000, which Smart Systems offers in dual colour. That lets the inside face match a pale kitchen while the outside suits the garden elevation or neighbouring windows. For Cortizo, ask us to confirm the finishes available for your opening.

Do bifold doors work on a basement extension with a sunken garden?

They can, provided the external level, drainage and threshold are planned together. Visofold offers a low threshold, and Cortizo's bottom frame can be recessed for easier access. Where a basement garden is small, a full-width fold often makes the space feel far larger. We go through levels and sections with your architect before fabrication.

How far do you travel to St John's Wood?

Our only premises is our workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 22 miles away in a straight line. The drive usually takes an hour to an hour and a half depending on traffic. Our own team makes the trip for the survey and installation, so the people who measure your opening are the people who fit it.
