Homes in Virginia Water and how bifolds fit them
Most houses here are large and detached, set back from the road behind hedges and trees. On the Wentworth Estate alone, styles run from early Arts and Crafts houses to Neo-Georgian, Colonial Revival and modern designs. What they share is a substantial rear elevation facing a private garden, often with a terrace, a pool or a garden room.
Bifolds are the natural choice when the aim is to open that whole elevation. Folded back, a set of six or seven sashes leaves a kitchen, orangery or pool house open to the terrace from end to end. Where an extension wraps around a corner, the Cortizo system can fold away on both faces and leave the corner itself clear, with no post.
Choosing between Visofold and Cortizo
Smart Visofold 1000
Smart Systems lists sashes up to 1,200 mm wide and 2,500 mm high, a typical sightline of 122 mm and frame depths of 70 to 82 mm. Glass can be 24 to 38 mm thick, the published U-value is 1.4 W/mยฒK, and the standard roller is PAS 24 approved. A low threshold and an integrated cill are both offered, and the frame can be dual colour.
Cortizo bifold
Cortizo publishes sashes up to 1,200 mm wide, 3,000 mm high and 120 kg each, with sets of 1 to 14 sashes. It takes glass from 25 to 45 mm, quotes Uw from 1.1 W/mยฒK and holds a PAS 24:2012 security certificate. The extra height makes it our usual pick for orangeries and double-height garden rooms.
Our Visofold or Cortizo guide compares the two in detail. You can also read our overview of aluminium bifold doors, or learn more about the manufacturers on our Smart Systems and Cortizo pages. All of these are maximums, and we confirm what your opening can take.
Runnymede planning and estate rules
Virginia Water is in Runnymede. The Virginia Water Neighbourhood Plan was backed at a local referendum in May 2026 and, at the time of writing, is going through formal adoption, so it may become part of how applications are judged. Check with Runnymede Borough Council whether your extension or new opening needs planning permission. Our guide to planning permission for doors and windows covers the general rules.
On the Wentworth Estate, the Wentworth Estate Roads Committee publishes working rules for contractors. Work and deliveries are limited to 8am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to noon on Saturdays, with nothing on Sundays or public holidays. Contractor vehicles cannot be left on the estate roads without the Estate office’s approval, and the verges must stay clear. We plan delivery, parking and working hours to suit those rules.
Is a slider a better fit?
Where a long garden or lake view is the priority, a sliding door may make more sense, with larger panes and fewer frames. Read bifold versus sliding doors for the full comparison, and see our page on sliding doors in Virginia Water for the Reynaers ConceptPatio 130.

Frequently asked questions
Can you work on the Wentworth Estate?
Yes. The Wentworth Estate Roads Committee's working rules allow contractor work and deliveries from 8am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to noon on Saturdays, never on Sundays or public holidays. Contractor vehicles cannot be left on estate roads without Estate office approval, and verges must stay clear. We schedule surveys, deliveries and fitting within those rules.
Do I need planning permission for bifolds in Virginia Water?
Replacing existing doors on a house is often permitted development, but a new opening, an extension or a listed building can need consent. The Virginia Water Neighbourhood Plan was approved at referendum in May 2026 and was being formally adopted at the time of writing. Check with Runnymede Borough Council before you order.
Which bifold suits a tall orangery or pool house?
Cortizo is usually our choice, because it lists sashes up to 3,000 mm high and 120 kg, with glass up to 45 mm thick. Visofold 1000 is limited to 2,500 mm high per sash. For a pool house, we also discuss condensation and ventilation, and we confirm the final sash size for your opening.
How many panels can a bifold door have?
Cortizo lists sets from 1 to 14 sashes, with up to seven folding to each side, and each sash can be up to 1,200 mm wide. Smart Systems builds Visofold to order with the same maximum sash width. More sashes means more frames in view, so we balance width, sightlines and how often you open the doors.
How quickly can you start in Virginia Water?
Our lead time is from 10 days once the specification is agreed, because we make the doors in our own Fifield workshop. Virginia Water is about 20 to 25 minutes from us, so survey visits are easy to arrange. Planning and estate approvals, if needed, should be in place before we fabricate.
