Double Glazing in Milton Keynes: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Double glazing in Milton Keynes means very different things in a Wolverton railway terrace, a 1970s grid-square estate and a new house on the city’s edge. Inspired Glazing fabricates aluminium windows and doors at its own workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, and fits them with its own installers, and we also supply UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. We are not based in MK. The city is roughly 55 miles from Fifield by road, about an hour to an hour and a quarter via the M25 and M1, so we plan surveys and fitting days in advance around that journey.

One city, many building eras

The new town designation order was signed on 23 January 1967, and the Development Corporation laid out its grid of distributor roads roughly a kilometre apart, with neighbourhoods tucked between them. Outside Central Milton Keynes, housing was held to a three-storey limit, so most homes are houses rather than tower blocks. Early schemes were strongly modernist and drew architects such as Richard MacCormac, Norman Foster and Ralph Erskine; later districts moved to more conventional layouts. The borough became a city in 2022.

Older layers sit inside that grid. Wolverton grew around the London and Birmingham Railway’s works from 1838, with about 200 company houses built for workers by 1844. Stony Stratford straddles Watling Street, a former coaching stop where more than thirty mail and stagecoaches a day once called. Bletchley took in Londoners from 1952 under agreements with five London boroughs, culminating in the Lakes Estate at Water Eaton, while Fenny Stratford grew after its station opened in 1838.

Choosing frames for MK homes

Flat-fronted modernist and grid-estate houses

Clean-lined architecture suits aluminium. The Reynaers SlimLine 68 is an outward-opening casement with slim profiles, and Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows add further styles; see aluminium windows and doors. Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors work well on wide rear elevations.

Narrow openings benefit from slim frames, but check the conservation and Article 4 position first (see below). For a timber look we offer woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium; we do not make timber windows.

Family homes across the newer districts

UPVC windows and doors in Selecta Advance 70, a composite front door, Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds, or a conservatory or orangery. Porches, roof lanterns, secondary glazing, garage doors, fascias, soffits, guttering, blinds and shutters are all available.

Conservation areas and Article 4 in Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes City Council is the planning authority and lists 27 conservation areas. Those in the urban area include Bletchley, Bradwell, Great Linford, Loughton, Milton Keynes Village, Shenley Church End, Stony Stratford, Willen, Woburn Sands, Wolverton and Woughton-on-the-Green. The council notes Article 4 directions in Wolverton and Olney, which can bring changes such as replacement windows on front elevations under planning control.

Because the terms vary, check with Milton Keynes City Council before you order if you live in any of those areas. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, and a leasehold flat will usually need the freeholder’s consent as well. Our planning permission guide explains the basics.

Areas we cover

We work right across the city, from Wolverton, Stony Stratford and Bradwell in the north-west to Bletchley, Fenny Stratford and Water Eaton in the south and out to Woburn Sands. Neighbouring pages cover double glazing in Newport Pagnell, Buckingham and Leighton Buzzard.

Survey, quote and fit from Fifield

Because MK is a longer trip for us, we group appointments in the city so each visit is used well. Our surveyor measures every opening, looks at the reveals and any render or cladding, and talks through finishes. You then get a written quote; aluminium windows start from £400 each, and the double glazing cost page explains what else affects price. Aluminium frames are made in Fifield with lead times from 10 days, and our own fitters travel up on an agreed date, remove the old units, install the new ones and take the waste away.

All work carries a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a branch in Milton Keynes?

No. Our only workshop and office are in Fifield, near Windsor. Milton Keynes is roughly 55 miles away by road, about an hour to an hour and a quarter via the M25 and M1. We plan surveys and installation days in advance and group appointments in the city, and our own team travels up from Fifield for every job.

Is there an Article 4 direction on windows in Wolverton?

Milton Keynes City Council lists Article 4 directions for Wolverton and Olney conservation areas. These can bring changes such as replacing front windows under planning control, but the exact terms vary. If you live in Wolverton's conservation area, check with Milton Keynes City Council before ordering, and we will discuss suitable styles at survey.

Which windows suit a 1970s or 1980s Milton Keynes house?

It depends on the elevation. Where a house has plain, modern lines, slim aluminium frames such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68, or Cortizo and Alunet systems, tend to look right. UPVC in the Selecta Advance 70 system is a lower-cost option. Check whether your house is in a conservation area such as Bradwell or Great Linford before choosing.

Can I replace windows in my leasehold flat in Milton Keynes?

Possibly, but flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so external window changes may need planning permission from Milton Keynes City Council. Your lease will usually require the freeholder's or management company's consent too. Get both confirmed before ordering. We can provide the drawings and specifications they typically ask to see.

How much are aluminium windows in Milton Keynes?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 each, and the same pricing applies in Milton Keynes as elsewhere. Size, opening type, colour, glass and the number of windows all affect the final figure. We give a written, itemised quote after a free survey, and we plan the visit around the journey from Fifield.
